navigon-liteIf you checked out the Lite version of Navigon’s satnav app and want to, you know, actually use the GPS chip with the software, Navigon is today launching the full version of their Australian mapping app. But you should definitely pick it up before August 15.

The app is set to sell for $99.99, which includes Navteq maps for all of Australia. But it will be selling at the promotional price of $69.99 before August 15, so you should definitely pony up the cash sooner than later to get your hands on the app. That’s the kind of saving that would make even the cheapest of cheapskates take notice.

It hasn’t gone live on the Australian itunes Store just yet, but the developers promise it will sometime today.

$100 for an IPhone app . . . you’ve got to be joking!

Why should it be much cheaper simply because it’s on the iPhone? I really dislike this attitude because it means sophisticated applications that require a great deal of development and maintenance don’t get built – or bought. 70 bucks is still significantly cheaper than turn-by-turn navigation for Nokia Maps. And a damn sight cheaper than buying a standalone GPS unit.

Must be an old map. Don’t you have to take the exit to get to the Todd Road service centre now?

I guess they should be cheaper becuase of the distribution channel, there is an expectation that apps are cheaper, because they sell by volume, there is no packaging, there is no retail store, i.e. limited overheads.. good luck to them. think they may have priced themselves out of the market,

Of course you are right, good apps should cost good money.

That said I don’t think I would pay that price for an app on my iphone. I think it has alot to do with the temporary nature of most peoples relationship with one phone v another.

Somehow buying a dedicated Navigator unit from a known company dedicated to that type of hardware and service seems more permanent, even at the extra price.

      well said.
paying 70 or $100 for a program on a phone just feels a bit too much for something you’re not physically getting.
Whats gonna happen to the $100 app when my mobile phone contract renews… hmm

but i gotta admit, the program looks pretty damn attractive. minus the price

The apps you buy are tied to your iTunes account, not your phone. If you switched to a new iPhone, you’d be able to continue using all the apps you’ve paid for.

If that doesn’t satisfy you, then you’ll have to fork out the hundreds of dollars for a standalone GPS unit.

I spent $80 on Mobile Maps, and am very happy with it. I’d spent $300 on a stand-alone Garmin two weeks before, so I was happy to recoup my money on ebay and spend the $80 on the iPhone app. I’ve been very happy with it. Now I only have to carry one gadget with me.

It’s bad luck if you hadn’t downloaded the Lite version already to have a look.. seems it’s no longer available.

Finally something worth my iTunes credits(Xmas pressies). Tried the lite version, loved it! Great country maps from Navteq. The Whereis maps can’t compete once your 30+km from the CBD.

There are relatively few publishers of the kind of mapping data you need to build a navigation app for Australia, so the publishers we do have make you pay through the nose to license the map data.

Haven’t seen the licensing terms in this case, they’d be confidential, obviously, but Navteq is probably enjoying a hefty per-app-download fixed fee. There may well have been an annual fixed licence fee too, irrespective of how many copies of the app Navigon is able to sell.

    It’s a seller’s market.

Course its not useful to people who would rather speed and run red lights, then get to their destination safely without killing anyone else on the road

If you are interested, Mobile Maps DOES have Speed & Red Light Cameras

Will the phone have to use a service provider, using up the “data transfer allowance” on my plan?
    thanks.

The app is on-board, meaning no additional Data/Carrier fees apply.

The LITE app only gave you a demonstration mode, you could not put in an address and navigate to it – hence why it was for free.

$70 is cheap cheap cheap. Sure it doesn’t have the full features (speed camera’s etc) like a normal GPS does, however that’s why the cost is only $70 and not $400. And like I said before, it is on-board navigation so no ongoing data/carrier fees. We are used to $1 apps (I have heaps of them) however what do you expect for $1. Let’s get serious here.

By the way, the 3D rendering seen in the example is a feature I have only seen on the new top-end GPS devices.
