Microsoft Exec Claims Firefox’s Billion Downloads Is Probably Bull

This is Amy Barzdukas, a general manager in charge of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. And she may be smiling in the photo, but nowadays she’s bitching a lot. The reason? Firefox one billion downloads claim:

As with any marketing statement, I’d encourage people to be somewhat sceptical about large number claims. It’s an interesting number and I have not seen the math [but]how many internet connected users are there? 1.1 billion, 1.5 billion, something in that area.

She described the number as “interesting math,” even while that one billion figure includes every download and update since Firefox launched since 2004. Repeated downloads too. And people having multiple computers.

Knowing that, it doesn’t seem that crazy to me. What do you think about Amy’s claims? And about Firefox’s figure? [The Guardian]

She makes a good point. I’ll always be sure to be sceptical of big numbers in Microsoft marketing statements from now on.

Further still, what about all the downloads not from Mozilla’s site? Filehippo and app depositories like that would have a massive amount of downloads not reported directly to Mozilla. I think she is just a leetle bit jealous.

Don’t forget us nightly testers – I’ve probably done one or two hundred of those billion downloads. And think of all the other nightly and beta testers, too.

It’s one billion downloads, not people. Imagine downloading every update automatically. That’s easily over 10 downloads per person. But the downloads are real, nonetheless.

Is that like M$ claiming an install of IE for every copy of Windows sold?

Well from the top of my head I’ve downloaded FF 4 times for my windows box (2 reinstalls, 2 OS updates, XP-Vista and Vista-Win7RC), twice for my Linux Box (1 reinstall), and twice for my macs (once each), then add on my 4 work PC’s (2 machines each at 2 workplaces), that’s 10 downloads just from me!
13 if you include the Portable Firefox I have had on my 3 USB drives over the period.. (but those aren’t included in the official downloads)
I think 1 billion downloads is a pretty easy number to reach!
