Kodak’s Flexible OLED Display Swims With The Fishes

Because even aquatic life needs to experience the hype surrounding flexible OLED displays, Kodak dunked one of theirs into a tank of water, turned it on, and recorded what happened next with a few pictures:

Long story short, the display turned on just fine and displayed a—wait for it—fish image.

While a bit quirky, the achievement is noteworthy simply because OLED displays, like some cats, despise water. But this one didn’t!

So now flexible OLED displays work under water, or at the very least in tiny cups surrounding by Playmobil people. [Plugged In via OLED Display]

@aec007: Better to patent underwater OLED technology now, and wait for someone to come up with a use for it. Hmmm, underwater cameras with an OLED screen; water-proof cell phones; scroll out OLED 'map' or computer screen for divers? A 65" OLED would be nice too, but not really much of an innovation...just a matter of 'growth'. I'm sure that they would give you a call if they knew that you and everyone else would pay the $1 million+ to buy a 65" OLED HDTV. Until then, maybe you should get a HD projector with...umm variable screen size capability and a much 'thinner', screen width. :P

So THAT's where Arthur Dent put his Babel Fish!

That doesn't look like the kind of image I'd expect to come out of a corporation like Kodak. Lego minifigs are way more professional.

    @mixedgeek: Watch Hero's what?

  • aec007

    Whoopdy do!
Call me when it's a 65" diagonal stick-on HDTV to put on my living room wall.

I don't think I'll be hosing it off with a garden hose sprayer to clean it in the living room...
and I hope it'll have more colors and display ...you know... movies rather than green pixelated fish.

Yikes! ... 1 step forward and 2 steps back....

@AndrewJayPollack: Why are you on a tech enthusiast website if you don't care about future technology?

  • AndrewJayPollack

It may work in water, but until it works as a rollout screen on my blackberry or laptop it doesn't matter a bit to me. Just more cool tech we still don't have in any real sense. May as well declare that it's made of carbon nanotubes, can make my car fly, runs Duke Nukem Forever.

    Typo.

"... tiny cups surrounding by Playmobil people."

    Should be "...surrounded by..."

Call me when OLED is affordable in a TV bigger than a laptop screen. =/

These little things really are the future, if they ever get cheap enough, imagine them being used for advertising, like cereal boxes, billboards etc.
