Foxtel’s New Channels To Be Mostly Movies And Sports?
Now that D3 is up and orbiting the earth, it must be time to begin speculating as to exactly what bonus content we’ll get on Foxtel later this year when they flick the switch. The Australian today reckons we’ll be seeing a lot more movies and sports.
Michael Bodey at the Oz says that Showtime is expected to ditch Showtime Greats in favour of genre-based stations, like Action, Premiere, Comedy and Drama, with the first two showing in HD. Meanwhile, the Movie network channels will add a few more channels as well.
Fox8 and Fox Sports 1 & 2 are expected to go HD. Sci-Fi will be getting a timeshift channel, but there’s no mention of an HD version. Damn.
Foxtel plan on announcing their new channel lineup in October, so until then all this is unconfirmed. Which is just as well – no HD Sci-Fi is just plain sad.

More movies and more sci-fi? Fantastic! But EVEN MORE sport? That’s just crazy. There is already a glut of it on free-to-air TV.
Elly, i’m curious as to what sport(s) you actively follow? There are so many sports that are currently neglected that more channels are definitely welcome in my opinion. Unfortunately for me, I cancelled my foxtel sub only months ago.
I try not to follow any ;)
Yeah exactly but there are tiddly winks championships and repeats of 1972 cricket games to broadcast and keep the sports monkeys entertained and give them something to talk about with the boys.
Worst side of Australia is the obsession with watching sport
Agreed. I damn well love playing some sport (have played tennis, soccer, tabletennis & pool in formal full-season competitions and been an official at motorsport trackdays over the years) and it’s great fun, how damn involved people get in watching it weirds me out though.
I think Australia’s obsession with “watching” HD-Drama is worse that our obsession with sport.
I use talking marks because Australian’s dont actually watch HD Drama, they download sub-par SD-quality AVI rips off the internet months before the Australian commercial networks screen it and then complain they cant watch the show in HD for free – but its not like they were going to watch it in the first place anyway
I have no idea where I heard this rumour, but there was one where they would re-broadcast the Free-to-air channels for those on Satellite, or at least they were in negotiations for it anyway. Anyone else here anything on this?
I’m a satellite FOXTEL subscriber and I receive the free-to-air channels over the dish right now. I’m not sure about HD content (I have not upgraded to IQ2) but as far as I’m aware, you should already get them, including Seven.
There are no re-broadcast commercial FTA channels in Adelaide or Perth on satellite.
channel 7 is still missing from satellite subscibers. hopefully this will also be included. And all the HD variants of FTA channels.
Unfortunately, I can confirm 100% that this is the case. Expect to see Fox Sports 2, 3 in HD. And “new” movie channels like Showtime Action, Comedy etc. There will be a Fox8 HD and w.HD as well.
More movies, and sport. FOX8 and more FoxSports in HD bloody BRILLIANT!
More Sci-fi channels would be a waste on the mainstream.
Great time to be with Foxtel.
More sport eh? Awesome, now we can watch the same game from 12 different angles on 12 different channels.
I would love to see Fox Sport 1,2,3 in HD. I have a 42″ TV and the A-League games in standard def are absolutely disgusting quality. We only get 1 game a week in HD and it is lovely. With all the A-League games on foxtel, I am sure there are many tens of thousands of subscribers who like me will enjoy this update.
I would also like to point out that other than sports and special effects driven shows like action movies and sci-fi shows there is no benefit to watching HD. If you are watching dramas or comedies then you are watching for the gags or stody line and who gives a rats if it is HD or not.
i hope they finally rebroadcast all the free to air digital channels on satellite, and i hope they finally fork out and buy more programming not just shift shows from channel to channel and the constant hd repeats (seriously we can record shows on the box why repeat the same show 5 times in 24 hrs on hd channels which require iq2 to view anyway?). And to the sceptics who think only action movies n sports benefit from hd? i lol’d
well i hope these new channels will make my austar package so much better and im kinda hoping for the new bbc knowledge and bbc hd and cbbies will be released on foxtel at the same time hope to god
also on austar’s mystar we already get the new digital channels and i read foxtel will be putting on go! soon and it already has put on one which austar hasn’t yet
