@aec007: Not necessarily. Look up a company called "Fiberforge", which is a spinoff from the Rocky Mountain Institute. They're doing CF-reinforced thermoplastics that can be manufactured at lower cost than the traditional CF lay-up.

One of their claimed benefits is that you can make large sections of the car with single, low-pressure stamping machines, instead of the much larger number of hard-tooled steel pressing machines needed for conventional cars. So, the cost of tooling and assembly is much lower.

Hmm, looks like a cool car that will never happen. Man, though, BMW employees are really into drinking the Kool-Aid. Don't get me wrong they make great cars and it shows. But, I don't even think most Apple employees are that sheeple-like.

@Pootie Tang: yesss! stole my comment, but until they realize it's more efficient to turn a knob than to use that absolutely pointless system, then I don't want this car. Yes, i do know that they have included knobs in the cars for some things, but you still have to use it. no thanks

im pretty sure the designs will make it into production. the headlights and taillights will most likely be in a model to come. the panoramic roof seems likely too.

@aec007: That's a gross overstatement. Especially because it's not the whole body that's CF, just certain parts. Not to mention this isn't even close to being in production.

Those seats look less comfortable than bus stop benches...

Unfortunatelly they killed it when they stated " a lot of carbon" to get rid of brackets.

Carbon fiber = stratospheric price out of the realm of the masses and closer to the realm of Ferrari Enzo ownership. (like out of the realm of 99.9999% of the population)
