Find My iPhone Leads Cops To Robbery Suspects

Find My iPhone to the rescue again! Pittsburgh Police nabbed three robbery suspects over the weekend, after the man they allegedly robbed used the MobileMe online service to point police to their location.

I’m relieved to see he called the cops and didn’t take chances like the guys that personally tracked down a swiped iPhone back in June. That was an amazing tale, though.

The weekend robbery happened in (the apparently appropriately named) Shadyside. North Versailles police have three suspects in custody, and recovered a pellet gun amongst various stolen items.

So for AU$119 a year, Apple’s MobileMe gets you Find My iPhone, email/calendar sync, photo gallery space, and iDisk online backup. But with so many free online services these days, it’s really only the tracking/remote wipe feature that interests me (even though you can switch it off if you get into phone itself). What about you? Hey! I live in Shadyside! It's a great part of town (and happens to be where our Apple store is)

I think some people think Find My iPhone is a separate $99 service. It's not. It's a feature that was added into the MobileMe account so if you had one you didn't pay extra.

@Bystrika: I was just thinking that you can use Latitude to do the same thing. I use it on my BB Curve

I told Ray Ray to turn that phone off...but noooo

  • dukeofurl01

@UmbertoMonkey: it would be cheaper to just get LowJack.

@smirkette: Although... there are times I'd prefer to use the remote wipe feature. I won't go into it here.

@Bystrika: Not really, there's a sucker born every minute as they say...

Actually, Shadyside isn't shady at all. There's even an Apple store there...

BTW, find my iPhone works even if someone else puts their sim card in it. As long as the phone is on and ANY sim card is in it, you will be able to track it. Try it for yourself.

How about hiding an iPhone in the back window of your car. When the car gets stolen find your car?

  • Mr_Biggles

Ah The Pitt if its anything like Fallout 3s i'm not surprised...

@craighyatt: if it could find keys as well, that would be a double-win.

Does Apple have ANYTHING for free and not overpriced!!?
Come on!! this service may have helped a few but not millions!!
you can do exact same stuff with GOOGLE!

I bet all this is gonna bite Apple back one day.

@lostarchitect: But then Gizmodo would only have 1 or 2 articles every day.

try out ilocalis.com it's about 10 a year and does all the remote tracking stuff.

  • Entaum

I use Cylay, which costs a third of that and accomplishes alot more, including blocking turning the phone off. Naturally is a jailbreak only app, so not for everyone (even though I don't understand why since its such an easy and risk-free operation)

Giz should do a review comparing all those apps...

I'm still waiting for the FindMyGlasses app.

I wonder how many nokias, samsungs, lgs and others been found with similar methods.

Every smart phone on the market has same features, the redundant apple news are starting to tick me off.

  • NessiaArsinoe

Wouldn't the $5 per month phone insurance be a cheaper and better method to protecting your iPhone? At least you are guaranteed to get a new iPhone, instead of paying $100 per year and then only having a chance at recovering it?

There may be workarounds to Find My iPhone, but there are no workarounds to getting a new phone using the phone insurance.

  • suckerpin

MobileMe is $30 off when you get it with the phone, so $69 for the first year.
If you have the passcode lock turned on, make sure it doesn't wipe the phone after 10 incorrect passcode attempts, otherwise you'll lose the location.
I used this the other night when my wife got detoured off the freeway because of construction and got lost. I pulled up the location, and was able to get her back on track within a couple minutes.
    Awesome.

Dropped my iphone 3gs in Universal Studios this weekend. It say connected and in one spot all day.. Unfortunately the spot it was in was mostly restricted areas that staff couldn't even go into during park hours. Park closes at 7.

Park Employees said they would find it when they do the track walk and send it to lost and found.

At around 8:15 it still hadn't moved. Sometime after that an employee found the phone, began deleting my emails (not accounts, actual emails , imap sucks i guess lol.) They also went in to my evernote account and deleted all of my notes. So.. Not only did they get a free iphone 3gs which was only a couple weeks old, they also deleted my email and notes.. Bastards..

Once they deleted the ME account the phone completely unregistered itself from me.com and I can no longer track it. Just thought I'd add an opposing view of Mobile Me. For all I know, a Hollywood Rock It employee may have had it in their pocket all day, so me searching around the grounds would have done nothing.

LOL, "(the apparently appropriately named) Shadyside". It might seem like it's an appropriate name because of the article but Shadyside is probably less "shady" than 90% of communities in Pittsburgh.

However, if you want to steal nice things Shadyside would probably be the place to do it.

I use Find My iPhone to keep track or my girlfriend.

  • SEDAGIVE?!

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess most petty theft is commited by idiots.

    Advantage, us!

  • KitTyndareus

Don't forget its also useful for when you lose it. It's not just about theft. Really useful if you leave it down the back of the sofa at a friends house!

    KitTyndareus

  • Chewmieser

@happycamperjack: There's jailbroken apps that can alert the owner or even make the phone useless when the simcard is swapped.

    Chewmieser

  • Kris Aubuchon

@KingKash: the Mint.com app actually lets you disable it from their website, which I'm surprised more apps don't do.

    Kris Aubuchon

  • Kris Aubuchon

@happycamperjack: Well luckily, unless you have experience with the iPhone specifically - it may take you while to figure out the SIM card thing. It's not as obvious as most phones.

    Kris Aubuchon

  • KingKash

since i bought the 3G and 3GS outright.. i havnt subscribed to data, and thats the only thing really keeping me from mobile.me, like yourself, its the remote wipe/trace feature that im after, yes there are apps for that and i did buy those apps (undercover) but they only work if the apps been launched, so yeah,

US$99 to protect (not just an investment) but my peronal life and all its details... definately worth it...

    KingKash

  • sototallycarl

never tried iProtect (jailbreak only) but it says its detects sim swaps

  • mrzippy

You just need to make sure you have a passcode on the phone, otherwise you can disable find my iphone...

As for the power off, no solution to that!

Only good thing is criminals are stupid, do you think they have even heard of find my iphone?

    LOL!

    mrzippy

  • Aeikozz

i thought mobile me worked by iphone serial number not gsm sim

  • AlmaDadless

I believe Mobile Defense for android will detect a sim change. Why does Apple charge so much for something android gives away free?

    AlmaDadless

  • happycamperjack

Another dumb robber. Takes like 3 second to take out the SIM card and kill the tracking. It's really nothing but a novelty and marketing toy.
