Beautiful Glass Shard Spire Set To Dominate London Skyline

8:00PM August 26, 2009 | Danny Allen

Feast your eyes on these latest visualisations of The Shard (aka London Bridge Tower), a 310-metre skyscraper currently under construction. When finished in 2012, it will be the tallest building in the UK, and one of the tallest in Europe.

Designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the 72-storey tower has several twisting glass facets on its exterior, and inside, will have offices, apartments, restaurants and a 15-storey observation gallery.

It looks amazingly sci-fi, but every time I hear the word “shard”, I can’t help but think of Dark Crystal. [Shard London Bridge via Core 77]

    WTF! Is this a joke? The shard is the name of the large glass skyscraper in Mirror’s Edge that served as the Authoritarian governments surveillance center. It looks nearly exactly the same.

    I think it’s a bit of a let down, considering the 15 stories of so called “Observation Gallery” Then again it will look “pretty” in amongst all the fog, or is that smog!! :}
