Another Game Gets Refused Classification in Australia

David over at Kotaku is pointing out that the OFLC has refused classification to the RPG Risen, based on the fact the game contains “sexual activity and drug use related to incentives or rewards.”

Personally, sexual activity is an incentive in itself and has its own rewards. Sure, it may not be appropriate for kids, but that’s (again) why we need an adult-only rating for games. As for drug use – while I don’t find it that interesting outside of having a cool beer after a hard day’s work or a nice glass of wine with a meal, there are plenty of benefits in medicinal drugs in real life, so why not in a game?

Of course, the game is being developed for both PC and Xbox 360, so I’m sure plenty of pirated PC versions will make it into the country anyway.

Never heard of it before now.
The developers should be thanking the OFLC for the free publicity. While also blaming them for increased piracy.

I always thought the stim packs in starcraft were sus, just the reaction of the marines… Oh im glad it came out before games were main stream (i.e. a “Menace to society”).

“While also blaming them for increased piracy.”
true, but they will make no more money in this country without piracy than they would with piracy cause they can’t sell a single copy here anyway.

I hate the OFLC, why is there no R rating, this country is so backwards blahblahblah… Seeing as the only thing I can do is have Atkinson assassinated or – even less likely – move to South Australia. I’ll just have to sit here in disbelief that they are my only options…

Same, but now I have heard of it I am definetly going to search for it on torrent in the future.

I would actually purchase that game if it was available here, I don’t believe in piracy of games unless you are worried it is shonky (i.e. Overlord ii, didn’t want to purchase it until I tested it out for glitches, which it has ALOT of. Deleted it. Saved me $100).

I am 22. I watch R rated movies, I can legally have sex… let me play R rated games! I can purchase R rated movies from JBHiFi, it’s called i.d. OFLC! Want to know a way from stopping vulnerable kids from playing rude games? I.D !!! Stop ruining for the rest of us!

Another reason why pirating is superior.

How long has the OFLC been around ? Quite a few years I suspect. Maybe they were on holiday in ‘04 when I bought Shellshock NAM ‘67 on PS2. The game featured some of the most graphic violence I’d seen in a title at that time, the ability to pop Dexedrine and the option of visiting the local brothel (which would rock to and fro and emit loud moans upon patronage).

  • The OFLC aint seen nothing yet. Just wait till Dante’s Inferno is due for release – it has creatures who vomit and defaecate at you and a giant topless Cleopatra tries to swat you – Looks pretty sweet.

On a side note, why are all the leads in RPG’s set to men? I loved Oblivion for being able to have a female character… deep respect for Diablo, loved the Amazonian with the skimpy outfit and big, er, personality. :P
