  • Valnen

@gus2000: Ruthless? I just want justice. Anyone that would do something like this is not someone who should be allowed to live in society. The way I see it, if you would shoot someone over things that don't even belong to you so you can take them by force, you are less than human. You are a monster. Why should we let someone like that back into society?

@Xjep: Actually, it's called "Washington DC".

At least, it's called that whenever people bring up the subject of 9/11 and the "attacks on New York and Washington". I realize that Arlington was originally part of the District until the Civil War, but apparently people have a hard time letting go.

There are lots of stories out there on the web of apple refusing cash for purchases.

    @deanbmmv:
The apple store nearest to me has no cash register, no checkout counter. There is just a guy out there with a headset and a portable card swiper. There is a large door that leads to a back area, where I assume there is maybe a safe, but even people that commit robberies know that you go for the cash register and then get the fuck out. Front of an Apple store is all glass...you don't want to be in there very long.

  • Will Ross

    @smcallah:
You can carry concealed weapons (with permit) in VA on private property unless prohibited by owner. Also, you can open carry in VA without any permit.
The unusual places where guns aren't allowed are on University campuses (but only applying to students and faculty, not normal people just on campus), and places of worship. You also can't carry concealed weapons where alcohol is served, but open carry is okay in those places.
For other states, it's usually allowed unless the owner has posted a notice (at least for concealed carry).

    Will Ross

  • wAkO

    @Sinecure:

I use to work at an Apple Store and people do pay in cash for their computers. A couple thousand a night wasnt that unusual...

But if he was going after cash I would go for BestBuy, when I worked there especially on holidays, we would get about half a million in cash EASILY.

  • CameraShoe_GitEmSteveDave

@smcallah: I just pictured someone handing the cashier a bill, and him trying to scan it through the credit card machine, looking baffled, and asking the customer what is wrong with their card. They then call for a manager, who is old, and he explains that they used wads of paper back in the twentieth. He then reaches into a counter and pulls out a till, blows the dust off of it, and they complete the transaction.

  • circa86

This person must be incredibly unintelligent, our for vengeance on someone, or just a loon if he thinks he can walk into a place with cameras covering everything, tons of people, not to mention how beloved the Apple store tends to be in whatever area it is.

If the cops don't get this guy, the neighborhood probably will.

  • DangerousLiberal

@AlphaUltima: How are things in mom's cave? Did the news of the last two elections in Va.--and in the United States--reach you down there? I think you're just trying to bring the snark, but the onlything worse than a techie that knows little about tech is a techie who tries to make an ignorant political joke--a fault that can be cured by reading the WaPo every so often.

    DangerousLiberal

  • smcallah

@Xjep: It is considered both a county and city, because of its small size as a county.

But yes, technically it's a county. But people that live there and in the area just call it Arlington as if it's a city, because that is pretty much how the area is organized.

There are no incorporated towns or cities in Arlington County, so that is why it is usually just referred to as Arlington.

No one ever says that the Pentagon is in Arlington County, they say it's in Arlington. The same thing with the Arlington National Cemetary.

  • smcallah

@Kyle Bowles: In most states, it is unlawful, unless you are law enforcement, to enter a private business with a legally concealed firearm.

So if you're going to go into a store with your gun, and that store is being robbed, and you use it to fight or dissuade the robber, you too can go to jail.

  • smcallah

@Samifumi: Obviously it's a "yuppie" area, there is an Apple Store...

Which is why criminals in search of money would come to an area that actually has money, and maybe no one that will fight back for it.

  • smcallah

@TheCrudMan: You didn't check thoroughly then. Not everyone uses credit/debit cards. They have to have cash in the store to cover change for people that spend cash. And then, once those people spend their cash, the store has even more cash on hand.

Why would you think the Apple Store, just like any other brick and mortar retail store would not have any cash?

  • Paradise

@92BuickLeSabre: sadly i think your sarcasm might be lost on him. i wouldn't be surprised to see an "exactly!" follow up from him.

  • Paradise

@roflwaffles is terribly unfunny: find me a cop who will tell you this a wise idea. just one ... just find me one.

  • Paradise

@Kyle Bowles: this is the second worst comment i've seen in this post. the first being some dribble about red state/blue state or some bunch of nonsense.

congrats kyle! we can all aspire to be as deep as you.

  • Valnen

@superberg: Clearly you're not looking very hard. I've seen plenty of videos of civilians stopping these inhuman animals, both with guns and other weapons.

Look at it this way. Someone may get shot when you fire upon the robber, but the robber will get what he deserves...not like what our broken justice system will give him.

  • Valnen

Stuff like this makes me want to not live in this world. That we have people so evil, they would shoot an innocent woman over material possessions.

People that do things like this deserve the death penalty...whether they succeed in killing their victim or not. They've already shown how inhuman they are regardless.

  • Sunburn_summer

@orthorim: Yeah... we don't know if this person had a choice to take a bullet. If this psycho was able to fire a gun in public on innocent civilians then I'm pretty sure this is the kind of individual who would fire on somebody who was trying to escape said situation unscathed.

@TrollSlayer: I believe the only thing more annoying then someone feeling the need to say "first" and the parade of people after him and the person who gets annoyed at those people is the person points this out for absolutely no reason at all, besides to waste a gigantic amount of time typing out a big block of snarky gibberish.

  • deanbmmv

@CaptCaveman: Oh I missed the end off :P
"Last you checked? And how did you check exactly?....:P"

  • superberg

    @roflwaffles is terribly unfunny:

Actual video, or movies? Because I have seen maybe one or two.

As has already been stated, escalation does not usually end well. If the gunman was willing to shoot one person, he was likely willing to shoot more. No one walks in to rob a place thinking "I'll kill one person but no more! That's my limit."

  • AXSLV2

@AlphaUltima: Virginia voted blue in the last election.

I bought my iPod 4th gen at that very same store - that area is about as hipster, up-and-coming, revitalized as it gets. I can't talk for Richmond and the southern parts of Virginia but Northern Virginia is bluer than California.

@Azteck: Good one, you would think there would be a dozen videos of this on Youtube already.

Just for the record, I was in a Apple store this afternoon. But it was in Iowa. Nothing seemed out of place. The orange shirts were by the door, the blue shirts were near the bar, the black shirt was wandering around, and geniuses were fixing stuff.
Got the same sales pitch for Mobil Me that I always get and I was in and out of there after getting my phone replaced for an uneven bezel.

  • Mosaick

His Mac kept crashing when it is not supposed to ever, his thigh was burned by his 3GS and someone had to pay...

  • CaptCaveman

@deanbmmv: I really don't think they do a lot of cash transactions. Yeah, little Jimmy could save up his allowance and have mom and dad drive him to the Apple store one day to pick up a iPod. But how often is that going to happen?

    CaptCaveman

  • FuturePastNow

@Sinecure: You would be wrong. My friend, years ago, paid cash for his Powermac G5. Three grand. He's weird, but not *that* weird, plenty of people still use paper money.

  • orthorim

@Samifumi: I doubt it was one of the yuppies.

I'd imagine the guy thought robbing an Apple store would be easy - lots of highly desirable expensive goods, and not much security.

We also know the perp did not read Gizmodo or any other tech website or he'd have known that trying to steal from rabid Apple fanboys is not a good idea. She was probably like "hell no you're not stealing our shiny stuff". A true heroine of our times.

  • Xjep

Its called Arlington County, Virginia you make it seem like its a city when its not.

  • iomatic

@92BuickLeSabre: Yes, escalation has always been the correct solution.

For example, I was at the Apple Store and they did not have the orange LaCie "tough" drives. So I took out my Glock 22 and demanded they give me something else that is just as good. Got a new MacBook Pro (13"), iPhone (with activation) and Adobe Creative Suite.

See, it works just fine! And people think we need less CCW! Feh!

  • DustyButtâ„¢

  • 92BuickLeSabre

This is why we need more responsible people with conceal carry permits. Since criminals more often use illegal guns with no permits, it helps people protect themselves much more.
