My guess is they'll need to appeal to an internet audience and therefore focus their attention on getting viewers on the internet. The show would probably be a big bust if it only aired on TV and not the internet. And since it's animation, one of the easiest ways to cut back on budget is to hire cheaper voice actors. Sucks for fans, but it's still better than nothing.

CrunchGear hasn't posted the full story. The cast of Futurama is demanding a pay increase many times what they originally got. They are essentially boycotting the show until their demands are met.It's difficult to say who's fucking over futurama (Fox or the cast?) until we get more details. For all we know their demands really are unreasonable.

Chances are, though, they'll renegotiate depending on public reaction and market potential. I don't think Fox or Comedy Central are interested in producing a show that hasn't a single hope of living up to what it was and what it needs to be.

My guess is someone at Fox doesn't like the show and realizes that if they just ignore the fans they will just send annoying petition after petition to bring it back. So to permanently kill the show they have to bring it back and sabotage it. Next they will have Bender rely on Surge Energy Drink for life sustenance rather than beer.

Does no one remember years ago when the same news came out about The Simpsons?

From Homer Simpson's Wikipedia article:
Until 1998, Castellaneta was paid $30,000 per episode. During a pay dispute in 1998, Fox threatened to replace the six main voice actors with new actors, going as far as preparing for casting of new voices. However, the dispute was soon resolved and he received $125,000 per episode until 2004 when the voice actors demanded that they be paid $360,000 an episode. The issue was resolved a month later, and Castellaneta earned $250,000 per episode. After salary re-negotiations in 2008, the voice actors receive approximately $400,000 per episode.

Everyone should just un-wad their panties and give it some time. I guarantee this will work itself out. It's a negotiation tactic and they know they can't recast the actors without losing their audience.

I'm sorry, I'm a huge Futurama fan with every single episode and movie on DVD, but if they recast I'm just not going to watch it. I think boycotts and petitions are really annoying and useless for the most part, but I wouldn't watch the new episodes, so I guess that's technically a boycott.

Do network execs not realize that if you move a show and don't tell people that they won't watch it because they don't know when to? Because they keep acting surprised when that happens.

Sure, DVR solves that problem for a lot of us- I don't actually need to look at schedules if I know I have my machine set to grab a show, but that isn't the norm yet, and doesn't solve the disappearing show's low ratings.

How many times am I going to be surprised at the crap FOX pulls? Futurama is my favorite cartoon, and probably the last one I still watch. It is the personalities of the voice actors that make it as great as it is, and I simply won't watch it if they recast.

I almost can't believe they think we want the cartoon without the talent that made us love it.

Hopefully Comedy Central is smart enough to cancel their order under these terms.

Anyway, I commented on how I usually hate it when voices are changed for things like this. The original voice cast carries a charm and nostalgia that keeps you coming back for more. It's like having your favorite candy bar formula changed to have 25% less sugar. Sure, it looks like it did before, but it's just not the same.

Futurama came out before its time (no pun intended). I mean that I know a lot of people who really like the show, but didn't start watching it until production of new episodes had ceased and it had re-runs aired on other stations. It caught on too late.

Crunchgear is being kind dickish posting the casting directors email address. I guarantee you that he was not the one who made the decision. The use of 'stars' is a network decision - He cast all the movies and clearly had no problem with the original cast...

As a die-hard Futurama fan, this is just really disappointing to hear. It is an indication that bringing the show back is purely a cash grab, with no real concern going into quality. I would love to see new episodes of the show, but not if it ruins its legacy.

@Benguin: 20th Century Fox still produces the show, so that's where the money comes from. Comedy Central is to broadcast the first-run episodes, but it's still possible that it might air on network TV.

It's unfathomable that Fox would mistreat this show and Groening for years, but they throw ungodly amounts of cash at Mike Judge and Seth MacFarlane. And sure, a third MacFarlane show is EXACTLY what America has been clamoring for. Bring on the Cleveland Show!!! Ugh.

you know theres the ever so smallest of chances that it could somehow work should the show have been off ever since it was canceled from fox. However it has been within the past year or so that they've made futurama eps/movies. You just can't do that.

also how many aunt vivs were there? because i know there were at least 3. the original one, the much lighter skinned one, and then in one ep the lighter skinned one couldn't make it or something and her replacement did a few scenes.

The show is going to suck, just like the movies. They'll ruin Futurama in the same way the Simpsons got ruined. The focus of the show will shift from Fry to Bender (Bart to Homer) and they will over expose the bit characters (Scruffy) to the point where we get sick of them (Comic Book Guy). So who cares what they do, I won't be watching.

FOX: Dammit, we can't let the general public know we made another mistake by canceling futurama. How about we fuck with it some. Yeah, lets take away their precious voice actors. We own Seth McFarlin (personal note I like the guy and think he does a good job). How about we make Fry like Peter and have seth do the voices of everyone but scruffy. We don't fuck with scruffy.
