Windows Software Guru Now President Of Whole Windows Business

Steven Sinofsky, the amazingly competent dude at the helm of Windows 7 software development, has just been named president of the whole Windows division. He basically assumes the managerial duties of Bill Veghte, who was overseeing the business side.

Having met Sinofsky on a number of occasions, I can say that it makes total sense. He’s sharp, and now that he doesn’t need to focus all his managerial efforts on meeting development deadlines, it’s time to put the rest of his brain to use in getting the product into distribution. My sense is, given the man’s focus and drive, he was probably already making most of the key logistical decisions already.

It’s weird that Veghte is being bumped at a time when sales messaging for Windows 7 is so vital. The task of marketing Windows 7 will be taken over by Tami Reller, current CFO of the Windows division, who will report to Sinofsky. Veghte’s a really nice guy, and I was under the impression that some people thought he could be the next Ballmer, so I’m not too worried for him. However, it sounds like a demotion. All Microsoft says is that Veghte “will be moving to a new leadership role in the company to be announced later this year.” Let’s just hope it’s not leader of sanitation and food services. @froggy: But really, all he ever says is positive stuff on Windows. He's really just an apologist/evangelist. He still argues that Vista is great.

@iSmithx_is_stronger_than_you: Okay, factor in how long you will have the computer, any "subsidies" by the OEM's, etc, and it's actually not bad. I pre-ordered 2 copies of Win 7 upgrade for a total of $100. For two computers over the course of 3 years (Which is how long I'll keep the OS regardless if a newer one comes out), that's $1.39 per computer, per month.

@Grendel: Lol, laser tag, I get it. If that's not what you meant by "/pewPEW!" I don't care. That's how I interpret it.

@Wilson Rothman: You seem like you usually have your head on straight. That's good.

@Valnen: The raw MATERIALS cost more than 20 cents. Not only that, but are you... you know... "special"? You do know they have to pay UX designers, programmers, managers, entire development teams, really, then pay for the cost of QC on the discs themselves, all for something that will be put onto more computers than apple will sell in 10 years, right?

@Leonce: the majority of the cost goes into r & d. plus, microsoft is a business, and businesses are geared towards making money- preferrably lots of it

    @froggy:

Paul is a Windows/Microsoft Advocate. He's worked on Microsoft Beta's as far back as I've known him. He was one of 250 out of over 100,000 Windows 95 Beta testers selected to be invited to Redmond, Washington for the premier of Windows 95. He was also part of a smaller group to be a part of ClubWin and later (I believe) ClubIE, eventually he became a Microsoft MVP when Windows XP rolled out.

The fact that he's either made a career out of his participating with Microsoft, or that he does it on the side I think is actually a rather great thing.

I know both personally and professionally, had it not been for the work he did, I would have been lost dealing with some aspects of Windows.

His opinions on Win7 E aren't that off. In fact BetaNews ran a similar opinion to his, scolding the EU for crying about Microsoft doing EXACTLY what the EU said they wanted as a part of their suit against Microsoft, and then turning around and suggesting that Microsoft was still in the wrong for remedying the issue exactly how the EU wanted them to.

I don't get what Paul said that was so off?

@Mark 2000: Paul's stuff on Windows is actually pretty good. Most of the time (except his latest thing on Win7 E). His stuff on anything else... well, he should really stick with Windows.

  • Mark 2000

I thought for sure it was going to be Paul Thurott. He pretty much works for them as it is. Worst tech writer on the net.

  • Leonce

@Valnen: You, my friend, have missed the boat.

@Daniel Grinton: So a DVD with an OS on it really costs them 200+ dollars to make? More like 20 cents.

  • 32ndnote

@Wilson Rothman: Don't mind him. The rest of us know you bring balance to the force.

  • Futileboy

@UtaCardinal: Have you seen how much they spend on on marketing. It might be good to have someone get that under control.

  • cattrain

Replacing another Bill with another Steve.

  • Daniel Grinton

@iSmithx_is_stronger_than_you: Unlike Apple, Microsoft can't supplement the cost of the OS with the money they make off of overpriced hardware.

    Daniel Grinton

  • Wilson Rothman

@Grendel: Um, maybe you should read more of the stuff I post?

  • iSmithx_is_stronger_than_you

will he lower the outrageous price of windows?

  • Grendel

"Let's just hope it's not leader of sanitation and food services"

Was that.... um... (omg I'm mildly... flabbergasted)... Empathy towards someone/thing affiliated with Microsoft!

    /gasp!

Holy crap... I never thought I would see the day.

    /pewPEW!

  • UtaCardinal

So they move in a CFO (accountant) to do marketing? That explains a whole lot about MS's marketing lately.
