What’s The Pricepoint Sweet Spot For Blu-ray?

big-w-blu-rayI was shocked today to discover that Big W has Blu-ray movies going for $18.77 each. And not all just B-grade crap either – you can grab Batman Begins, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner for that price.

But what price is the sweet spot? Blu-rays discs are never going to be as cheap as DVDs (until DVD doesn’t exist any more, I guess), but at what point does buying an HD version make more sense financially than just picking up a boring old SD version? I reckon that $18.77 is getting pretty damned close, but then again, I’ve started buying everything on Blu-ray anyway.

So, what price is cheap enough for you to pick up Blu-ray exclusively?

$18.77 for older releases and $25 for brand spanking new releases will, without a doubt, cause me to abandon DVD’s completely. Not that I buy any DVD’s anymore anyway.

I have been buying the ex-rental blu-rays, ebaying and waiting for JB and Big W specials, but cheaper prices will make me buy new.

Look at that price for Watchmen on Blu-Ray. around 28 bucks.

The DVD version is $26, thats crazy.

i know which i would buy, High Def indeed.

Too bad it’s not the directors cut.

Yeah i sat down with my breakfast and some junk mail (as you do) and saw this in the big W catalog. I was pretty surprised that it was so cheap…i got a ps3, if only i had a big ass tv.

$18.76, and not a cent more!

I’m not usually this childish,it’s Friday afternoon and I just want to finish work already.

But seriously $18.77 is price I would fork out for a Blu-Ray

i will no longer pay more than $30 for any bluray (unless it was some kinda special uber edition) fortunately this isn’t really a problem anymore
(you see also in that pick that they are selling the new release watchmen for $28)

As for price sweet spot, if new releases are coming out at below $30 and titles CONSISTENTLY drop to around $18 to $15 AND STAY THERE(don’t go back up as these ones probably will), i think thats good enough.

to be honest, the biggest problem i’ve had over the last few months is selection, not price, i haven’t bought anything in a month or so, just because there was nothing really interesting to buy, i wish they’d stop fucking around with catalog titles that no one has any real need to see in HD anyway and focus more on ones like.. oh.. i don’t know… STAR WARS for example?

    Damn, that’s actually pretty good.

And of course, I’d just ordered Watchmen & the Pirates trilogy from Amazon (all region-free) for about those prices – but with $4 shipping each. Good thing I got a 3for2 deal.

  • For 25-30 bucks I would buy any new release I wanted to see. Sub 20 is the right price for old stuff.

  • $25 would be about right at this stage of the formats life. $40 for new releases is just a slap in the face.

That is a great price! i wish we had BW in my town. maybe KMart will follow suit at some stage?

Here is how my purchase decisions are based:
BluRay = Action, animation & great scenery based movies

    DVD = Comedy, drama

JB Hifi has a range going out at $14.98 at the moment too

The Blade Runner edition pictured is the 5-disc version! (I’ve checked the paper and online versions, all show the same picture)

Good luck to anyone who can scam this – I tried but didn’t have the 5-disc version at all : (

Blu-Ray has to match the price of DVD’s to replace them. The average consumer doesn’t care for High Def and the ones that do have got used to downloading everything now while they wait for prices to come down so they too have got used to sub-High-Def content. Of course there will be a few “must haves” in high def which people will always be willing to shell out a bit more for but I think Sony (et al) pretty much missed the boat on High Def by thinking short term greed.

Oh, and good luck to anyone trying to find anything in Big W from the catalogue. I gave up long ago after time and again being disappointed by the lack of titles in the catalogue actually surfacing in a store. I’ve thought a few times of reporting them for false advertising.
