@rt100 Penn State: O have the same issue and I'm running a 4870, a Phenom 9850, and I have 8GB of DDR2 1066 ram.

It seem all the hate is directed at the VLC version thats not labelled "1.0", Which of course makes all current hate comments irrelevantly misinformed.

@kingbob337: Well, I liked it. Then I had to adjust the audio, which happened 5 minutes into using it, and stopped liking it.

Something about having to exit fullscreen to do so.

Of course, not it can do that, just doesn't look as good as MPC.

@tobz1000: K-Lite doesn't come with the homecinema edition of MPC. Plus K-Lite goes a bit overkill and can create conflicts.

@kingbob337: I wouldn't say POS but I certainly don't like it. And there's basically just one reason for it, you can't click on an exact location on the "seek bar" (no idea what it's really called). With MPC you click on a spot and it jumps to that exact place. With VLC it can end up ahead or after, never spot on.

Oh and shortcut settings never stick, what's up with that? (3 computers and 4 different OS)

@ReynaldoRiv: VLC's controls are what have kept me using mplayerosx more often. Just using the arrow keys to jump and reverse is a winner for me.

I'll check out 1.0 later on.

Is the interface any better? I hate how the "rewind" buttons are really "slow playback" on the standard VLC UI. Other than that I pretty much love VLC. I'm waiting for it to be released on portableapps.com though.

Most of the replies have already stated this, but the picture quality sucks, the interface is horrible, it seems to mess up the audio sync sometimes (which is only editable at 50ms intervals for some idiotic reason), its laggy at times (especially when trying to skip ahead or backword), using basic things such as FF and RW is just awful, it has a tendency to make the picture look grainy and/or pixelated, it seems to degrade the digital audio out quality in comparison to other players, the advanced settings are messy and not user friendy, and it doesn't integrate with anything.

Plus, I'd bet most of you like it because it's for the most part your only EASY option on OS X. Plex is better though, or better yet drop OS X (you can completely remove it and run solely windows on apple machines just fine).

Besides how many people are actually using it to play all the obscure file types it can play, but really no one uses.

@deux_ex_machina: yes it works on all OSs (for all intents and purposes), but not only that, it can also open almost any media filetype known to mankind. If it's choppy on you computer, well then maybe, just maybe, your computer can't handle this kind of media playback. upgrade the RAM and the graphics then try opening them

I just downloaded and installed this program on my new computer last night. While it was downloading I wondered if it would ever hit 1.0.

@Kakkoister: I love using MPC:HC. It plays back everything I throw at it, is super minimalistic, but still has a wide range of control from the keyboard.

@bustedchain: Plus, its the only player i've seen that can actually stream a file using multicast or properly receive multicast streams. I use it at work regularly to test multicast on networks and its great. Plus, it lets me receive most of the IPTV channels floating around our corporate lan :-)

(Thats the LAN part in VideoLan Client!)

Honest opinion: The controls are MUCH MUCH tighter than previous mac releases, acceptable even, but not as quite as tight as quicktime. good job guys

@Marine85: That is like saying that you hate hammers because they suck as a screwdriver. Sometimes VLC isn't the right tool for the job. Most of the time it works perfectly for me. Maybe that's because I have a very powerful computer with tons of RAM, or maybe it is because I took some time to play with and tweak the advanced settings, or any number of other issues.

I find that VLC is updated on a regular basis and keeps getting better. Movies that didn't play well in it before are playing just fine now. (Not all movies play well in VLC even now, but it is getting better.). If you've ever had to fight with codecs to get an obscure file to play WITH audio, then VLC is awesome.

Also it has a ton of features like transcoding into other formats, amongst others.

@Kakkoister: yeah, vlc gets choppy when you drop a 1080p mkv on it most of the time, mpc doesnt stutter with them since you can enable gpu decoding (8800 gt in my htpc since i game on it too)

@CoolRiver45: what blind conformity to a shitty piece of software. the only reason i can see it being versatile is it works on mac, windows and linux. other than that mplayer is better for windows, and plex(althoguh not as minimalist in interface) is better for leopard in terms of performance. just because vlc is able to "open" my m2ts or .ts or mkv files doesnt mean it plays them smoothly. infact they play like shit...unwatchable shit. on the other hand mplayer or plex plays them butter smooth on my c2d 2 ghz.

Will 1.0 mean acceptable controls on a Mac? In terms of playback control VLC is SHIT on the mac.

I have it installed in case I find some rogue format but the perian/Quicktime combo have been a knock out duo! Honestly, after installing perian I haven't had a need for vlc

VLC has been so stable and reliable for such a long time that I honestly thought they'd keep the joke going by going to 0.10.0 instead of 1.0. Oh well.

Since Handbrake (Mac) uses VLC to rip DVDs will this update fix any of the issues Handbrake has been having with more recent movies (Doubt, for example)?

My favorite feature, besides playing every media format i've tried, is that i can turn the volume up to 400%. makes watching a quiet movie on a laptop bearable.

It certainly is feature rich and plays just about anything.
But I don't find it quite as stable/fast/polished as other media players (mplayer for example).

VLC is awesome for doing multicast! Also great for playing any files that are slightly corrupted or not quite standard. Has many features and is extremely light. I love it, but confess only use it when BS player has issues...

Media Player Classic Homecinema that's bundled with the Combined Community Codec Pack is the most awesome player though. But VLC is good for playing this files that are giving ya trouble.
