URC MX-5000 Remote Puts Haptic Feedback Where It Belongs

For every five products that claim some kind of haptic feedback support, maybe one actually puts it to good use—like the URC MX-5000 touchscreen remote, which uses the technology to guide your fingers while they guide your TV.

Beyond the haptics, the MX-5000 is a fairly standard high-end universal remote, intended for system builders to pair with similarly high-end home media systems—not your 40-inch HDTV. This explains the unorthodox button choice and inclusion of Wi-Fi, which the remote uses to display all manner of information broadcast from your receiver. It also explains the price price—although there’s no official figure, Crunchgear’s inquiry was answered with an ominous “below $US1500.”

Even if most people could never dreaming of needing one of these, the concept is still exciting: having to looks at a remote every time you use it feels like a step back, so if URC can clear that hurdle, more power to them. [Crunchgear]

    I'm rather well off so I can easily afford one of these. But instead, I've hired an out of work illegal alien to operate my system via voice command.

    There's a language barrier so my new remote still needs traning.

    I'm afraid I despised the harmony software. Especially if you've got non-brand specific equipment. Although the database has improved dramatically in the 3 years that I had the remote, programming the macros was synonymous to having your teeth pulled by some brain damaged rhesus monkey.

    I'm still rockin' my MX-500. It has done everything I've needed it to. When I saw the photo, I thought "yee ha, and upgraded version of the MX-500!", but then I saw the price and read about the target audience.

    Oh well... technology trickles down, I'll have one some day.

    @BigDogues: ...and I couldn't be happier with my MX-350.

    @CE_Salesman: $1299? Yikes, i'm guessing it'll only be sold at Crutchfield :)

    Tried a Harmony and absolutely hated it. The software is for babies. My MX-900 rocks, I can configure all the macros I need in about one minute. The build quality on all of the Harmonys is also a complete joke.

    My Harmony 1000 desperately needs this.

    I got to play with one of these at a product training a few weeks back. It feels great in your hand and the (capacitative) screen with the haptic is very cool. The wifi connectivity also lets the remote pull in RSS feeds (Giz on my remote?). It also does some neat things with their ($400) PSX2 ipod dock. If I remember correctly they told us it would sell for $1299 at the training.

    I still get up and push the buttons on the TV...

    I bought a MX-1000 when they came out. Touted as "The last remote you will ever need", URC dropped support for the remote shortly after releasing it.
    That was the last and only time I will ever give URC any of my money.
    Now I am the proud owner of a Harmony One and couldn't be happier.

    No amount of remote-clutter is worth $1500!!!

    @Cyberziggy: By "out of work illegal alien", do you mean your children?
