This Is How Your Plastic Objects Are Made

Curious as to how all those plastic cups, trash cans and containers you get at Ikea are made? Random Good Stuff takes a tour of the Koziol plastics factory in Germany, where many of those household items are designed.

The process is the same as the one used in the Lego factory, but instead of Lego, these guys make things you touch pretty much all throughout your day. [RGS]

@Valnen: red is the best color ever...

@92BuickLeSabre: Oh, yeah, they care. They care how you taste. Shark bumper sticker: "I <3 surfers... they are delicious"

So, Germans wear plaid, eh? I never would have imagined.

Its very interesting to see this kind of stuff at giz,
something i noticed is that they use the same software for designing the molds that i use here at work, solidworks... Way to go GIZ

@92BuickLeSabre: I said "A" 12 year old girl, not "THAT" 12 year old girl. It was the first result on YouTube, and I was tired.

    @greimel: Polytransmorcupification?

  • Sbudda

@Apoc112: As a piping designer who designs the cooling systems for these plants - I'm just happy to actually see a clean plant :-)

No lubricating oil on the floor, no dust covering the pipe racks... if it weren't for the fact the employees weren't wearing their hair nets, I'd have thought it was a perfect plant. Maybe non-disposable cups don't qualify as food grade?

Can we get a shot of the mechanical room, or am I geeking out too much?

I remember back in school, we had a career day thing where a kid's mum or dud would come in and talk. One time there was a dude who worked at a plastic company, and he said the word "Corn" about 50 times but it sounded like he was saying "porn".

    The End.

this was a 'take up space post' i'd like to say.... i would not keep coming back if the site was full of this.

@Apoc112: not only was it incomplete, it was boring. i'd welcome the sort of nuance that Apoc112 suggests.

@TheyCallMeStacey_GitEmSteveDave: For the record, she's now 23 years old and, after a storied career at the Univ. of Minnesota, was drafted as a point guard in the WNBA in April.

(Sadly, she was cut before the season started.)

If you believe your readers are actually interested in this kind of thing, it would be wise to report it in a more accurate manner.

This one caught my attention because I'm a plastics engineer, so it was interesting to see my trade on my favorite gadget news site, but disappointing to see that you've lumped "how plastic stuff is made" into just the injection molding process. Fun fact: most plastic cups (the disposable kind) are thermoformed, not injection molded.

Not that I expect 99% of giz readers to take a genuine interest in these details, but the ones that do deserve accurate and informative articles.

  • 92BuickLeSabre

@tehdorkz: It'd have to be something really lame and useless.

Maybe an update on the Zune HD?

    (HEY-OH!)

  • KeepingTheForeName_GitEmSteveDav

Somewhere, a 12 year old girl just sqeeued with delight seeing all those unstacked cups.

  • 92BuickLeSabre

@32ndnote: Worse than empathy, I didn't even check to see if he was banned. (He was.)

Curses! Our mockery was in vain! In vain!!!!

  • 32ndnote

@92BuickLeSabre: I know I know... I think that chicken noodle soup just gave me a wave of empathy I couldn't help but pour out into Gizmodo comments.

I'll keep the game up next time with a "ballyhoo, I can't believe you called something old. I heard that back in the third grade."

@Itspeat!: We attack because we care.

    Like sharks and surfers.

(That is why sharks attack right?)

@32ndnote: Pssst. Don't back down! I was just setting you up again! There is no mercy on the internet!

    but just sayinggggggg

  • tehdorkz

if this is a regular post...just imagine how boring the "what we didn't post" post will be..

  • 32ndnote

@92BuickLeSabre: Ok, you're right. I suddenly feel kind of dirty. I guess he did have a valid point in mentioning that one can watch a pleasant demonstration of this process on "How It's Made" anyway.

  • T-Will

@Matingmonkey is a proud eMac owner: Just another story on Gizmodo? I've already seen one of these today.

    @Matingmonkey. These comments are Ooooold.

  • greimel

I was expecting at least the name of the process giz; it's a little disappointing to have to click a link, wait for a bunch of images to load, then scroll down to find out it's just boring old injection molding.

@dingus: I've been on the internet before. This thread is so lame.

Why can't we go back to the days of leather cups?

    I preferred mine seasoned.
