These Window Blinds Are Better Than Most Views

I like this idea very much: Instead of normal blinds to hide horrible views—and make horrible interiors—use one of these Better Views roller blinds. You can get night cityscapes showing Paris, Tokyo, Helsinki, and Stockholm.

Unfortunately, the 100% black polyester perforated roller blinds are limited to 1,000 units each, at $US475 each. A great idea by the talented Elina Alto, hopefully waiting to be mass produced by IKEA. [iukbox via Mocoloco]

Very nice idea, a bit expensive, but can be done at home if you are even a little handy.

    Very cool actually...

  • flowerofhighrank

you could use Rasterbater or an overhead projector to trace the image (freewayblogger), then use a razor-knife to cut out the shapes. Brilliant; someone could make $ with this. If you have a CNC cutter? Easy peasy.

@Dr. Evil Genius: Depends on your perspective...

If you get a good amount of direct sunlight you could get a crazy weird tiled tan standing behind those things...

    @Skeetz: Hey, you're kinda smart!

@mrburglar: Ehhh don't know if it was a joke or not, but that's a door/window. Handle pointing up : opens only at the top; handle pointing down : opens like a normal door.

A great idea so you can open windows when it's raining!

Reminds me of the window shades in the movie Penelope (Great flick, by the way. Just saw it on Netflix this week). The shades are various backlit scenes (desert, stars, etc.) I'll look for a pic and post when I find it.

@Dr. Evil Genius: I see what you did there.

  • North Star

Hopefully IKEA mass produces it and the price comes down. No way I'd shell out $475 for that - no matter how cool it looks.

They should have used another one to cover up that warped/broken door in the last photo.

@OCEntertainment: Your right, I can't imagine being able to see much in my neighborhood that does not have street lights, but If you lived in a bright city it would probably work well.

  • superhappyfuntime

Ooh, what's to stop me from making my own (for personal use)? Other than the time invested in designing, and producing one.

  • OCEntertainment

@Bertone Zero77: It would depend on where you live, but most places, there's at least a little light, either from streetlights or, if you're more in the country, moon/starlight. I'd imagine even a little light would a black curtain like this light up.

  • OCEntertainment

Until the scenery is changeable, I'm not buying it.

Should be ready around 2015, though, right?

  • Skeetz

@Curves: IKEA sells roller blinds that are dirt cheap. Seeing as how this simply looks like cut out squares anyone handy with a ruler and exacto knife could recreate this pretty easily. Heck you could even photoshop these designs and print em out to make it easier.. your ideas sound nice as well and totally could be made on the cheap.

@Curves: One would think somebody could cut squares in black fabric for less than $500

  • facepuncher

kinda like rolladens from germany? i like those a lot, especially when you work nights. these would be even beter

  • Dr. Evil Genius

@Curves: ...that is probably on the horizon.

  • Curves

Its kind of cool, but at that price you will have to keep them forever and get tired of the view. Maybe if they had temp reactive scenes that during the day had day scenes or you could switch to a lovely country setting, or moon rise over Russis or something. Variety of views.

  • Bertone Zero77

Very cool, but it's depicting a night scene so would you actually be able to see it at night with out the daylight shining through it?

  • kevjohn

Might be able to use this as a photo studio backdrop. Hmmm....

  • Pew Pew BOOM

Just don't put it in your bedroom or you'll be really late for work/school/play WoW/watch tv etc...

  • Dr. Evil Genius

I can't wait for something like this to become available for regular people - especially since wealthy people have these views already w/o the blinds.

  • dosdelon

@NurseDave: My thoughts exactly, and maybe use a thin white curtain behind it to soften the light coming in through the cutouts.

Anybody else notice in the 2nd picture that the far door is shut at the bottom but cracked open at the top? It must be one of those elastic doors.
