The Comfort Respirator

This respirator mask design by Elijah Stillson is meant to have comfort AND function, ensuring that when a biological attack does hit, you won’t even notice that you’re wearing a mask. You will notice the dead bodies, however. [Yanko Design]

    @AvohkahTamer Has A Lazorcat!: that makes 3 of us.

    As an Industrial Designer, when people design things like this it makes me hate Industrial Designers.

    WOOOOOO!!! Eli's my friend, and while he's not here to say "Cool! Thanks Jason!" I will.

    Cool! Thanks Jason!

    Suh-freakin-wheaties, folks, now YOU TOO can look like a million bucks when they start dropping the biological bombs in the apocalypse - 'cuz, you know, one MUST look one's absolute best during the apocalypse, rightyroo?

  • SteverMan

    @PaddyDugan: Yeah, when I saw it, I thought it looked like the world's best CPAP mask. No more worrying about the air leakage around the edge, and I'm sure my wife would get used to looking at it eventually.

    It would be kinda fun at the Worldcon masquerade, wearing it as a CPAP Vader thing...

  • FunkNotPunk

    So what happens when you're wearing this thing and you want to turn your head left or right and those filters dig into your neck? Not sure how that contributes to "not noticing you're even wearing a mask."

  • FrankenPC

    Mix this with a pair of Zaphod Beeblebrox "Peril Sensitive Sunglasses" from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and we are all set!

    @dingus: Fallout reference! +1 sir, +1.

  • rDub

    @Barry99705: Ahh i hated the old "black dust of doom" suits. Luckily the newer J-list chem suits are lighter and dont have any black dust residue ... that being said I would still prefer not to ever have to wear one!

    @finite_elephant: "I'd want to wear a hat with a brim to keep things from falling down inside of it. Like sparks."

    Or zombies :O

  • finite_elephant

    @Nick: I think the black part inside the face shield makes the seal about where it does in a current mask. It's not really meant as a full hazmat headpiece.

    The integrated face shield isn't a bad idea, but I'd want to wear a hat with a brim to keep things from falling down inside of it. Like sparks. Ouchie.

  • --Core--

    I like it, pretty cool.

    I honestly don't know if the face shield part is just that.. a face shield, because if its going to do more they need to make a better shield around the glass looking part.

    @Xelinor:
    your link has been subdued!

  • Sockatume

    @orthorim: Goes some way to explaining why it doesn't seal around the face.

  • orthorim

    Guys... RTFA... apparently even the editors couldn't be bothered. Otherwise you would know that this is NOT for biological attacks - this is a respirator to be worn in a workshop where these guys are apparently doing some modeling of some sort - I imagine it's going to filter out particles from whatever they are working on. Not Anthrax.

  • ridgecity

    if people got weird faces for the tiny masks during the past epidemic, Imagine walking around with that crazy thing.

  • Americun MORAN©

    @Jereme Orf: Let's hope the small, airborne metal or plastic particles don't fall from above.

  • Americun MORAN©

    @Nick: From the site-"it closes when the respirator is not being worn and extents the filter's life.
    Anyway, maybe it's a clear silicon bead.

  • The Brain

    I'll stick with my $5 Israeli model with the somewhat mission critical RUBBER SEAL AROUND THE FACE!

    @georgetang: Same...

  • Dr.Jeckyl

    @citizensmith: It doesn't look like it would stay on someone's head very easy does it? There's no strap keeping it pulled up, just back.

  • DeadWriter

    Good headgear for the Tripods movie.

  • Alex Goodin

    I feel like this could be turned into an awesome device to smoke soon-to-be-legal substances out of.

    this looks BADASS. like when I'm battling zombies and blood splatters ill be fully protected and also certified for some ace combat. bam

    Anybody who's been diagnosed with apnea has instant recognition. Can I use my CPAP during a gas attack?

  • Whydoesthisalwayshappentome

    @Invisible-Echidna: Yeah, it does, but looking badass and being badass are two completely different things.

  • Xelinor

    Uh oh, someone ripped off batman's tech ;p

  • Jereme Orf

    @Nick: You are aware that this actually isn't for a biological attack. I had wondered these things also, but after click the link to the site it said this is more for workshops. Haha. So the Gizmodo editors took it a bit out've context.

  • citizensmith

    Wow, pretty but utterly useless. As another user pointed out, here is something designed by somebody with no experience in respirators.

  • Invisible-Echidna

    That looks pretty badass.

  • yeti

    @Nick: From the size, it looks like it'd have to be a passive filter, which is no problem to keep anthrax and several other pathogens out. You're right, it doesn't appear to seal, so I have to wonder why the face shield at all and not just a pair of glasses. Although I've never heard of air-eyeball transmission of a pathogen so I'm not sure you need glasses either.

    yeti

  • Barry99705

    @Nick: Looks like the filter cartridges are on the sides, like the old masks. Good question about why it doesn't seal around the face. Obviously designed by someone who's never had to wear one. How the hell does it stay in place? Even the new chem masks with the straps around your head could come lose if you're running. I'd guess there's a suit for the rest of the body. God I hated the chem suits. Freaking black carbon on everything.

  • Nick

    where does the filter element go? why doesn't it seal around your face? what about the rest of my body? what did everyone else die from? was it a bomb? and does that thing look comfortable to anyone?

    Nick

  • 92BuickLeSabre

    Of course you'll notice the dead bodies. How else would you know where to step?

  • georgetang

    @pretty pretty pony:

    That's what I first thought about... Darth Vader

    @spannu: it must endure the onslaught of a million baked beans expelling their stinkies out the bum bum.

  • pretty pretty pony

    You'll also look (and probably sound) like some new agey Dart Vader

  • spannu

    As long as it filters out farts too, I'll take a hundred. Depending on the lunch, those can also be considered biological attacks, right?
