T-Mobile UK’s Calling The HTC Hero The G2

T-Mobile US’s decision not to launch the HTC Hero isn’t going to stop T-Mobile UK, which is going to go ahead and release the updated Android phone under the G2 label.

The obvious question is what the T-Mobile US will call the G2. Obviously not the Hero, but maybe the upcoming keyboarded version that we’ve been hearing about? [Android Community via Into Mobile via Mobile Crunch]

@Inception: its so they can say they have something new and cool. If 2 companies has the same phone and name it 2 different names then they can say they are the only one with that phone.

@tande04: yeah I know.. but I will add it to my collection ;)

@tande04: Well the name of the G1 from HTC is the Dream. So yeah its is a T-Mobile naming convention.

At the same time G2 also refers to the 2nd U.S. Android phone.... So you could say the Magic "My Touch 3G" is the G2

T-Mobile & HTC could also release a phone with the name of G2 rumored to be a hardware keyboard phone AKA, G1.V2.

But really the name G2 is something that the fans came up with after hearing rumors of a 2nd Android phone from HTC. So you can call the My Touch G2 or you can wait and see if a new phone will drop with the name G2.

P.S. "The G1v2 isn't made by t-mobile" At this point all US Android phones on the market are made by HTC and the rumors of the G1.V2 being made by Samsung is bogus.

See the story would be that this is a change for T-mobile UK. The phone was originally called the G1 Touch, not unlike the "dream" was called the G1 by t-mobile USA.
The question then becomes two fold. Why did T-mobile UK change the name? Are they holding it for a QWERTY keyboard phone of their own to call the G1 or is t-mobile going for a world wide branding here and there won't be a UK G1 or a US G2

@JackMatt: Well thats what the question is. We don't know what they plan is.

What ever it is its a T-mobile plan, not a HTC plan. Since this phone was supposed to be called the G1 the question is does T-mobile now want a world wide "brand" for its google phones? Is the G1 always going to have a keyboard and the G2 always a touch screen? Might explain why the pulled the name from the MyTouch. The G1v2 isn't made by t-mobile

@punk1n13: The problem is the market is starting to pick up on the Android systems. Per HTC World Wide they have the G1, Hero, and Magic. And rumors of a new handset with a hardware qwerty keyboard, G1.V2. So this G2 was really a project name that may hit as the G1.V2 or so on. Till something is really said will don't know.
