Stream Zune Songs To Your IPhone
Gear Live found a roundabout, but clever, way of streaming Zune tracks onto your iPhone. Why would you do that? Because Zune Pass gets you a basically unlimited amount of songs, and they don’t play natively on the iPhone.
What you do is set up Orb on a Windows machine to transcode, on the fly, your already downloaded Zune songs. This way you can listen to your music (your entire music library, not just 16GB or 32GB worth) wherever you have an internet connection. It works over 3G as well as Wi-Fi, but EDGE is a little too slow for full-quality music.
Head over to Gear Live for a walkthrough. [Gear Live]

Orb? He built an entire premise around Orb? Thanks for helping the clueless, but Orb will stream any media anywhere. This article could of been about streaming your torrented movies to your Nokia phone (yes it works).

@brutaluser: Slacker has similar functionality but much, much better sound quality over 3G.
Kiamat
@Samson Li: I do. Why? Well...
1. Music sounds better on a Zune.
2. No 120GB iPhone
3. No WMA support on iPhone
4. I want my PMP to play media, especially music, and play it well. I'll leave my game playing, picture taking, app launching, and phone calling to the iPhone.

@Samson Li: I have an iPhone 3Gs and the original Zune 30gb. Planning on buying the Zune HD when it comes out.
Raziel66
@Samson Li: I do.
@shadowproof9: please don't give up your pass in that case...
rockhopper
@Samson Li: I do as well. I had the zune first. It is a much better device than ipod, but the iphone is a completely different device, its a phone first for me and a music player last. I dont even use the ipod function. why would I when i have 80 gigs of music on the zune??
Sweet idea. I would give up every pair of pants that I own before I give up my Zune pass.

@bill cant fart: if you have trouble accessing your computer from another computer... maybe you are trying to logon on to the IP of your router and not actually your computer... If you have a home network setup, than you will have to port forward your router to your computer and then connect to your routers IP through whichever port you forwarded to your specific computer.

@jaysire: Umm... this isn't a "Zune app"... it's just using Orb to play [your] Zune's library.
@quikboy: I agree. I like them in concordance with each other. I like using Pandora to find music and then use Zune Pass to dl it. Or sometimes I just like listening to "stations" without giving it much thought.
@Samson Li: I did. I had a 30GB Zune and an 8GB iPod Touch. I didn't like playing music on the touch, so I got rid of it.
@link to the Lifehacker Rules. Specifically, the post entitled "How to (Not) Get Banned". I have excerpted the relevant portion:
Obviously, there is always room for debate on what is what.
@Samson Li: 30G Zune and 16GB iPhone 3G.
I love more the zune APP than iTunes, but this is just me.
iphone is the best phone out there, can't beat that... yet.. but for music i rather have zune
@bill cant fart: For the iPod Touch you can download Simplify Media's app, which essentially streams your library. This, however, requires iTunes as an intermediary and thus inherits any of its limitations.
Strictly using your browser: You can login to an ftp server using Mobile Safari using the following url convention:
ftp://USERNAME:PASSWORD@xxx.yyy.zzz
Once logged in, you will see a file directory listing. You can click on mp3s, wavs, or any other file that would be playable in quicktime. This will launch the Touch's native Quicktime player. Not a very elegant solution, but one that uses the Touch's native software. There are probably better solutions out there if you jailbreak the Touch.
I imagine ftp-ing works similarly on the Pre.
As dingus pointed out you can setup a Shoutcast server. There is now a Shoutcast App in the App Store, which should conceivably be capable of searching for your Shoutcast server and streaming music from it.

I really hope I won't see a "Zune app rejected, reason: duplicates the functionality of itunes" -topic in a few days...
jaysire
@ACEACEACE: But you'll still need iTunes :-(
@brutaluser: If you've used Pandora Radio and the Zune Pass, you'd know they aren't completely the same...
@PerryCylla: Brick like? My Zune 16 doesn't seem terribly fat to me. Just like less than a centimeter in thickness.
Just a reminder/tip....your ZunePass can be shared on 3 zunes and 3 computers = it's basically only $5/month
RedwoodFlyer
@wana10: edit* for the ipod at least, missed the pre part
@bill cant fart: simplify media should do it.
@Sam Adams: You forget the 10 tracks a month you can keep
the_sidewinder
omg now we can all pay infinite $$$ for our music like Zune users and never really own it! HURRAY!

@Samson Li: Someone who had a Zune and a dumbphone, but recently bought an iPhone. (me)
I loved Zune with all of my heart, but damn, I need to make some of that money back!
It's hard to sell Zunes on Craigslist.

@travisvannimwegen: No, you aren't spamming, but you are being a dick. It's terrible netiquette.
@travisvannimwegen:
Dude, you're spamming your blog, stop. It's annoying and if you hadn't shamelessly plugged it, I would have checked it out more than twice since that 10 programs article was a pretty good start.
Zing. Now I can delete all my music off my iPhone.
@OMG! Ponies! suggestion and list the link to your blog in your profile. It's just good etiquette.
atlasfugged
I have both, and like them both... the iPhone 3G more....
I don
't need this hack though, I use the SIMPLIFY app to stream my Zune collection stored on my PC, to my iPhone.... works like a charm.
vidmeister
Blasphemy! This is how stuff like aids gets started.
@Samson Li: iPhone 3G and Zune 120 owner!
mosammey
Thank you for this article. My Zune 80 is broke just out of warrenty and I settled for an iPod Touch. This will prove very useful.
ajr
@Tito: I just checked and there is no rule against it. And I'm not spamming. All my comments are legitimate I just put [tech] before it because I might as well.
@chrishannan:
Simplify doesn't let me play my DRM'd music.

@here, but I'd like to point out that I checked all the different pages, (except the i09 page that wouldn't load) and none of them complain about advertising a website. I agree it's annoying, but it hasn't been mentioned as a bannable offense.
@[i.gizmodo.com]
or
[gizmodo.com]
But then again, I thought it would have been pretty obvious that spamming is frowned upon...
Great pic. I was just thinking about how there isn't enough Micheal Jackson coverage. Thanks for filling that gaping void.
geoken
Got it working perfectly, no lag over 3G, my DRM'd music plays perfectly.
XanderVincent
@OMG! Ponies!: I would like to see Gizmodo's policy on comments first.
@danielsmi: agreed.
Also, my 8GB Zune sounds noticeably better than my old 2nd Gen Nano and newish 80GB Classic imo.

@travisvannimwegen: Blog-flogging is where you put a link to your website in virtually every comment you post. Like your little [tech] links that appear in over half of your comments.
There is a place in your profile to list your blog. If people want to read your blog, they can look on your profile and affirmatively click through to it.
But posting a purposefully nondescriptive link in nearly every comment without any disclaimer of what the link is or that the link is, in fact, your blog - that is blog-flogging and when I signed up wayback when was a banworthy offense.
In over 10,000 comments, I can only remember 2 or 3 times when I posted a link to my own site. And it was only as a response to someone asking if I had a site and always included a clear statement that the link was my own blog.
@Samson Li: I do. Zune is much better than iTunes.
@spannu: if I don't know what it is, I don't know how to stop doing it.
@deadphotomac: To be honest I have only used a Zune once. Whats nice with the UI?
@Samson Li: I keep an iPod Touch 2G and a Zune 80 on me. The iPod replaced my five year old Palm PDA and only has a small portion of my music and videos. My Zune caries my full collection of mostly lossless music and high quality videos.
MehStrongBadMeh
@Samson Li: I do as well. I prefer my Zune 80 over my iPhone for music. And I agree with others the Zune service and program are just better than iTunes.
danielsmi
@dingus: Hmm... that looks interesting... I don't know if it works with 1and1 though.
Oh. My. God. YES!
I <3 my Zune Pass, since I was blowing $80 on music before it, and I love my iPhone.
This is the best news ever.
XanderVincent
@travisvannimwegen: Blog-flogging is a great way to remove yourself from our presence.
spannu
@travisvannimwegen:
I like the Zune better for the UI and the device itself.
deadphotomac
Or just use Simplify Media.
@bill cant fart: Shoutcast server maybe?
dingus
@OMG! Ponies!: Can you explain what blog-flogging is
@Samson Li: I do.
And Travis, no blog-flogging.
@Mike918: Its not spam.
@jcrockerman: What does it matter? You don't have to click on it.
@travisvannimwegen: Travis....are you advertising your blog on here, mate? You put that link before every reply. What the hell? Not cool.
jcrockerman
@travisvannimwegen: Still spamming the site?
@Vulphaestus:
Worked for me. It's great being able to watch cable TV on my iPhone wherever I am (I have a TV Tuner in my computer). I can also access any document, any music, any video...
pmbaustin
@Samson Li: I am a proud (and more than happy) 2nd gen zune owner AND an iphone 3g owner. I have 0 songs on my phone and 30gigs worth on my zune. Wouldn't think of it any other way.
@Samson Li:
I do.
the iPhone is a great device.
But my Zune 80 has my entire music collection on it... it doesnt' fit on the iPhone.
And as for music players, I prefer the Zune. Better software, better UI... just love it.
The Zune software is infinitely better than the absolutely sucky iTunes crap.
pmbaustin
Sorry if I'm kinda off topic, but I need the help of some fellow geeks.
-OK, I have a FTP server with over 120GBs of space.
-I have music.
-I have an iPod Touch and will be getting a Pre.
Is there someway I can use my website to stream music to my iPod and (when I get it in the next few days) a Pre? Like some sort of web app I can set up?
I've always had trouble accessing my computer from another IP and I don't really want it on all the time.
Thanks!!
I do. The Zune is collecting dust..however. As much as it sounds much nicer than my iPhone, I hate how brick-like it is. ..oh, and the software sucks too! Not to mention it won't work on my recently-acquired MBP...
PerryCylla
Wow... this suddenly made the iPhone a bit more appealing...
ACEACEACE
Setting up Orb on my iPhone never worked, so this won't work for me.
Vulphaestus
Well, you wouldn't need to have a ZUNE. Just a ZUNE pass.
Andre Weems
[tech] @jcrockerman: the Zune HD actually looks really cool.
@Samson Li: I have an iPhone 3G and plan on buying a Zune HD.
jcrockerman
Personally i prefer Pandora
[tech] @Samson Li: Someone who lost their receipt to the Zune.
Who has a Zune AND an Ipod/iPhone?
Samson Li
