Samsung Glyde 2: Better Luck Second Time Around?

Leaked photos of a Verizon-branded Glyde 2 (aka U960) smartphone show it has a streamlined design, a fourth row added to the keyboard, and now uses Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. It all sounds promising, but what about that sluggish touchscreen?

When our very own Matt Buchanan conducted last year’s iPhone Clone Battlemodo, his verdict on the first generation Glyde was as succinct as it was scathing:

“The Glyde is just a truly terrible phone. Most clay bricks are more responsive than its touchscreen, especially around the edges, and the crappy, sluggish Verizon software doesn’t help. And its keyboard ain’t much better.”

I do like the idea of a competitive haptic touchscreen rival to the iPhone. So here’s hoping that Samsung and Verizon have lifted their game. It’s early days, so no word yet on pricing or availability. [HowardForums via Electronista]

After owning a Glyde 1 (seriously, I will never under-estimate a Giz phone review again!), the Glyde 2 would have to make me food and give me message's to ever contemplate even picking it up. I have been a huge Samsung fan in the past with all other sorts of electronics, but this phone is the worst I've ever had. Even worse that my Zach Morris phone from the 90's.

Though, I tend to blame Verizon more than Samsung. I bet the engineers had a killer OS that did all sorts of cool stuff, but the Verizon tax destroyed it. The service might work (almost) everywhere you need to go ... but you have be able to navigate the phone first and actually make the call. Makes me want to switch (to AT&T) ... at least I'd have a cool phone even if I had no signal.

@tekjock: You say the following: "Sell me a WinMo phone with no data plan or I walk now." Of course, you have to be willing to follow through in order for that to be effective.

The Glyde is the most humorously shitty phone I have ever used. I'd have more accuracy throwing darts than I do using that touchscreen. It is so bad that I actually have fun seeing how much I can confuse that stupid OS. The funniest part was the inclusion of an interactive touch screen Rubik's Cube. That was like trying to superglue your hands together and thread a needle. Easily the worst phone I have ever used, Verizon or otherwise.

@tekjock: Damn Fiskers. Always fuckin' you on cat food prices.

@The-Tree: I didn't actually refer to the original Glyde as a smartphone, just the U960 (given the latter's 3G capabilities, new interface, improved keyboard, etc).

  • The-Tree

how the hell was a glyde a smartphone?
it didn't connect to my computer to transfer contacts and calenders, it didn't pull email down by itself...it was a dumbphone.

and you are comparing a dumbphone with a BASIC purpose to a SMARTPHONE with practically unlimited options like the iphone.

really are we just that bad at journalism that ANY touch screen phone that launches it gets compared to an iphone even when it isn't made to compete with it?

christ, you guys are getting sloppy and irresponsible lately with this "journalism".

@Andre Ondre: Which is wonderful for me since I won't have to buy a data plan if I get this phone.

  • yungjerry703

@tekjock: not sure about verizon but my friend told att to take off the data plan and when they said you need it for the iphone he said "fine! i'll send you the iphone back"

    always worth a try.

I'd argue that "sluggish Verizon software" is redundant.

I had a Motorola E815 on Verizon, and grew only disdain for the Verizon enforced modifications. I followed that with an E815 on Alltel, and was much happier.

"As God is my witness, I'll never own Verizon phone again," he said in his best Scarlett O'Hara voice.

"TouchWiz" has a nice ring to it. Not in a marketing success kind of way. More in an adolescent male humor kind of way...

I love the service I get from verizon ... but I LOATH The fact that for me to get a new WinMo phone they require a data plan ... F#$KERS.... There excuse is ... "The features on then new phone REQUIRE the data plan"

can anyone tell me if there is a way to get a WinMo phone from verizon and not get a data plan ... Please there has to be a way around this.

Why compare it to the glyde?

The glyde 2 thing is just something the blogosphere named it. It sounds like the real name is going to be the Rogue.

Since the glyde came out on vzw, samsung has released dozens and dozens of touchscreen phones on every other network and many have met with generally positive reviews.

Compare it to the Impression, which is what its basically going to be.

I am late on this, but welcome Stephen.

That Smartphone would be better if it ran Winmo 6.5, Winmo 7, or Android. Instead of a DUMB phone OS with a useless resistive screen..

  • Jmclark

That sounds like it would be a good phone if it had some custom firmware. (not Verizon's).

I have never had buyers remorse like I've had with the Glyde! I just had it replaced for the third time under the warranty. The rep said he could only give a new phone of the same model when I asked for something comparable in it's place.
