Rumour: PSP2 Already In The Works, As Powerful As First-Gen Xbox

9:48PM July 7, 2009 | John Herrman

Eurogamer’s Spanish outpost is claiming to have “insider sources” that know all manner of stuff about a forthcoming PSP2, which is alleged to have Xbox-like graphics capabilities. Too soon? Probably. Hard to believe? Quite. Intriguing anyway? Well, sure.

The report is a difficult one to assess, mainly because it’s all about specific hardware components—nothing conceptual to scoff at, nothing strategic to question, no release dates to be sceptical about, just claims that the next PSP will carry a quad-core PPowerVR SGX543MP graphics chip, similar to (but more powerful than) the one found in the iPhone 3GS. This specific fact is plausible enough, but it also doesn’t tell us much at all about the product it’s said to be a part of, aside from obvious the fact that it’ll be more powerful than the last PSP.

Anyway, that Sony is working on PSP2 right now should be the major story here, but Eurogamer has nothing to say about the broader context of the device, other hardware specs, or its software. Set this one aside as a curiosity for now. [Eurogamer via Kotaku]

hmm, thats not powerful enough. maybe if they brought it out right now, but even then, this is a dedicated gaming device (maybe movies as well) but its too bulky to replace an iTouch as an mp3 player,
what i’m saying is, it has to be ALOT better at gaming than the iphone, to make up for it not being a phone,camera,mp3 player ect. (tho, if it is a smaller form factor, it could compete with the iTouch)

why not just implement this sort of thing into the PSPgo?

That’s how Sony make money. Obsessive fans and materialists will lap all new renditions, no question. They could make that now probably, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to. I’m guessing you’re pretty young so I’ll go easy on you…

It would make too much sense for Sony to make the PSPGo actually desirable, or innovative. PSPGo = PSP1 – UMD fail…that’s it.

This will help you understand sony’s logic!
