Everybody Loves a Corpse-Eating Robot…Nobody Loves 1.8″ Hard Drives…Everex Is Dead (Wait, Who?)…Guns N’ Roses N’ Piracy Don’t Mix…

Leave it to Fox News to read a website saying a robot can fuel itself on “biomass…and other organically-based energy sources…as well as use conventional and alternative fuels”—in other words, switchgrass, diesel fuel and vegetable oil—and jump to the immediate conclusion that this means dead bodies. The weirdest part is that Fox went so far as to suggest that these scrumptious corpses would be “plentiful in a war zone.” Just tell me, o unnamed author, did writing that actually arouse you? [Fox News via HardOCP via CrunchGear]

Here’s one I’m a little bit sad about: The end of the 1.8″ hard disk drive is nigh. Ars reports that Samsung and Toshiba are having a damn hard time selling their 240GB and 250GB 1.8-inchers, mostly because flash memory is cheap and capacities are higher than ever. Nobody needs to carry that much media on their person. What this really means, though, is that the iPod Classic, possibly the biggest customer of 1.8″ drives, is dying out too. Come September, we’ll know the score. [Ars Technica]

Speaking of gadget demise, Everex, most recently makers of the Cloudbook and the gPC, went out of business. I don’t miss ‘em, do you? Avram at Laptop is actually happy about it—so happy he made this beautiful tombstone—so I guess that’s that. [Laptop]

Pop Quiz: What punishment do you get if you posted nine pre-released tracks from Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy on your up-and-coming music blog?
a) One-year probation
b) Two months’ home confinement
c) An engagement to produce an anti-piracy announcement with the RIAA
d) All of the above
Answer: D, according to today’s news about citizen-pirate-blogger Kevin “Skwerl” Cogill. What you don’t get is a year in prison, a $US371,000 fine, or anything but positive publicity for your website. So much for setting an example, RIAA. And congrats, Skwerl, though I should let you know, it’s spelled S-Q-U-I-R-R-E-L. You are so nuts! [Wired]

This is really the first thing I though of when I heard of the corpse-eating robots

Does that mean we won't be seeing the one TB ipod classic? ipod classics are awesomenesstingly the best

  • ttech10

I've learned that Fox News has the worst headlines.

Of course, Fox News also has the most eye catching headlines. So... yea.

  • Wilson Rothman

@kyel57: No, I think you're not following. He got ALL of those three sentences. Combined. Just not any of the other ones mentioned after.

  • vx2

Can't wait for September. Time to get the a new 64gb Touch with camera!

My beloved 160gb Classic will always be close to my heart though, as the big music storage jukebox.

@Bigbadbikernerd:You could make a self sustaining hearse.
But then how bad would it be to be waiting at the church and the hearse pull up with the body of your grandad hanging out of the engine.
Still beyond the ethical implication I suppose it would be a good idea on the battlefield. But then if your in the middle east there is a lot of petrol there.

  • kyel57

On Image number four, for the pop quiz I think d should be none of the above, not all, because that doesn't make sense, you're just misleading people

  • 92BuickLeSabre

@Bigbadbikernerd: Why do you keep your car behi... ... Oh.

  • BobFraggle

Oh yes, Everex please stay gone. They were the first company I actually accused of using cow dung as a fundamental building block of their computers. Stay gone, baby. Just let it be.

  • Bigbadbikernerd

I wish I had a car that ran on corpses. That way I could clear out that crawl space behind my stairs...

    @wurzt:

At this point, it's easier to just solder the Flash ram chips directly into the device.

  • wurzt

Aren't there any 1.8" SSD's to replace it?

So, that lady who is getting manhandled over sharing those songs got the short straw? Shitty.

@berbar: You could make the switch to the 120GB Zune, but I dunno how you feel about the "Empire".

@Unspellable: To be fair, I think Giz was in a joking mood with the whole article. Maybe they were Fox's source (they wouldn't know any better).

I'm hoping that Microsoft still keeps their hard drive Zune line going, there's money to be made in the market if Apple pulls out of it. I'm not going to go with flash until we see at least 128GB available cheap, especially with HD support coming around the corner for all of these devices.

  • Fractal the Meek

Good Lord. Whoever the Fox character was, I pray they never get a command. Although seeing the enemy shoveling fallen brothers into their tanks as fuel would scare the crap out of a person.

@deanbmmv: With my grandad, it'd actually be a fitting final resting place. He was a funny-car racer in the 60's, and a life-long gearhead thereafter.

  • berbar

Oh yes, the end of the 1.8" drive will be sad, but sadder will be if there's no iPod Classic this year. I have re-ripped most of my digital music library to 256 Kbps VBR, which means, I need at least 80GB on my iPod.

My 80GB 5.5 Gen died in April and I've been holding out to get a new classic after the expected September's iPod refresh. And NO, I don't need an iPod Touch, because I have an iPhone. No need for a Touch. I just need something that can carry ALL my music. And in case you're wondering, YES, I listen to ALL of it.

  • Signore Pinko-Panko! realizes hi

@skramsfan13: Was the post edited or something in the last half hour, because it clearly says "What you don't get is a year in prison, a $371,000 fine, or anything but positive publicity for your website." (Yarr, there be emphasis in the original, on ye olde worde "don't"...)

  • Frood

Fox is a bunch of idiots. Anyone see the discussion on why people from finland or switzerland are health? The anchor said, "because their their species remains pure." Wrong on so many levels.

  • skramsfan13

@Wilson Rothman: Yes, it said he received 1-year PROBATION not jail, house arrest, and some type of arrangement. He didn't get a fine or a year of jail.

  • apple1loop

On image 2, this could also mean trouble for the MacBook Air, as it uses these drives as well. Don't worry though, Apple won't let these drives go under.

  • Unspellable

What does Fox have in common with Gizmodo?

Perhaps fear inspiring news about DARPA-biomass-chainsaw-wielding... robots using 'flesh' to fuel itself?

"DARPA Stops Trying Not to Be Terrifying, Funds Chainsaw-Wielding ..." (http://gizmodo.com/5311824/darpa-stops-trying-not-to-be-terrifying-...funds-chainsaw">darpa-stops-trying-not-to-be-terrifying-......+wielding-flesh+eating-robot)

The problem is: when I try to go to that article that Google pulls up I get the following URL (and the frontpage):

    http://gizmodo.com/#ERR404

There maybe even more in common but I can't tell since the article has gone AWOL.

  • ellito

So what will happen to the MacBook Air? SSD only or internal redesign to accomodate 2.5" drives?
