Pegasus Open 50 Tour: This Is How A Race Sailboat Works (Part 1)

The official Gizmodo raceboat, the Pegasus Open 50, was originally rigged for reliability for global cruising. Going from CA to HI in a race requires more power. Here’s a tour of the tech in the rigging, hull material and sails.

The video work is less than terrible, sorry, but hey, its a sailboat. I’m just trying to help you get your sea legs

Philippe Kahn founded Borland, invented the Camphone, and decodes human motion. He’s also a fellow outdoorsman, splitting time skiing Tahoe and sailing in Santa Cruz. He’ll share his Transpac 2009 sailing race with us live from the Pegasus Open 50.

Brian, I don't think any Open 50 or 60 was ever "... originally rigged for reliability for global cruising" ever. 100% race boat, built for speed and not comfort, which the word "cruising" implies. I have followed some of Mr. Borland's previous 2 man Trans Pac races. The Opens are usually sailed single handed.

@TonyRockyHorror: Yeah I thought there was a lot of really cool info there.

Brian, very much appreciated. Don't listen to the babies who are whining about this not being another cellphone article. I really like it when you guys break away from the norm.

@Mammoth: sailing is not relaxing off the coast of northern california. Also, gizmodo is not about news. Half the posts on the front page are not news.

  • Brian Lam

@TashaArachne: previous posts have plenty of shots of the boat, Tasha/Betsy

@Roger Huston: Hey three comments on this is enough.

Anyone brings it up again, gun to your comment account, pulling trigger til the clip is empty.

@BellaMacroshaft: these posts aren't for everyone, admittedly. If you're interested, read it, if not, your comments are not contructive, welcome, helpful or entertaining.

@jawzzy: Carbon doesn't necessarily block a signal. It can however attenuate it to the point that it is not usable. In the Lab I work in we have sheets of material impregnated with carbon. Different thicknesses have different amounts of carbon and therefore give varying degrees of attenuation. I use it when testing Wireless back haul radios on the bench to give them the same attenuation as if they were communicating over a distance of 2-4 miles.

I really need to get on sailboat somehow...I'm more into older bigger ships, but I wanna learn how to sail.

    8-)

  • aerospaceman

ok, alright, ok, alright....good thing that stopped right away :)

  • PatrickAristodemus

Since this is a boat sponsored by Giz this does belong here, and to the first commenter: Nobody had a gun to your head to make you watch..... I hope not at least, but if so at least your captors are trying to fatten up your brain before they eat it...

there's loads of tech and gadgets on high-end sailboats, so it's entirely appropriate.

    widen your thought processes guys!

@Hi, I'm God: Sailing is not relaxing. (At least Laser Radials aren't)

  • CodingParadox

Whatever, I'm intrigued. Cool to know about some of the high end race boats. I don't care if it doesn't really seem in place at the Giz. :)

  • TashaArachne

Well, I liked it. I would have preferred to see the actual boat instead of the boats on the other side of the pier. The materials they use for the sails, etc. are pretty interesting. -Betsy C.

I'm glad to see my shadow on the dock there.

  • BellaMacroshaft

I'm an avid sailor/ racer and I enjoyed the info on hull design, But Dude! what were you thinking? This is what turns people off of sailing. You could of have at least given us a full length view of the boat. Better luck next time.

  • HartleyEmu

I'm an avid sailor, and read Gizmodo daily, so I think that these two combined is great!

  • Hi, I'm God

I'm not sure why we should care. I'm all for sailing - it's relaxing. But its not enticing news that I need to know.
