im glad europe made gsm the standard... i know people like to bitch about a standardized charger... but making gsm mandatory here would kick ass...

My gawd, I made the leap to the darkside to score me an iphone... And had the greatest interactions with 4 (4!) of the stupidest human beings ever to answer phone calls for a living. Not too mention one half of my condo complex is 3g, and the other half is not. Lord, i misses verizon.

Maybe Europe can figure out exactly what that lame Pre commercial with the guys in orange dancing around the girl on the rock actually means. Honestly, if you're not in the know, do you have any clue what they are trying to sell?

@Daniel Pullen: I'm guessing you're talking about O2. don't know them specifically but he're is how many carrier markets work here in the states.

the carrier doesn't care what phone you buy, Pre, Blackberry, or Iphone, as long as it's a profitable phone. In the states the fact is the Blackberry is a more profitable phone per phone for At&T because it doesn't tax the network like an iphone does. Ask them and they'd love to sell a blackberry at the same price as an iphone, charge the same fees for voice and data, but only have to pay a third of the cost for the bandwith required to deliver the service.

in cases where there is no contract they want to sell whatever phone has the greatest profit margin. And that's not always the iphone. In many cases phone companies make the biggest margin on a $50 that they paid $5 to buy but also sell with a data plan. So deep down they care about what makes them the most. And they have to pay a lot for the iphone and given the network strain it's not always their most profitable phone

@Fractal the Meek: maybe it's a location thing. i've had t-mo for 7 years and my signals has almost always been strong. but i live in a big city. if i had a choice i'd stay with t-mo in a heartbeat.

@shawn_dude: it comes with lots of languages. i don't know them all but on launch the demo i was playing with wasn't in english. funny i was so excited i barely noticed. eventually stumbled on the page where you pickthe language and it gives you a list of choices.

@Phillip Drummer: I believe t-mobile uses 1700 for uplink and 2100 for down. If it is triband UMTS like the iphone (850/1900/2100) it will work with at&t 3g but not t-mobile.

Isnt having the Pre as well going to eat into I Phone sales. Also arnt the O2 stores gona have to take down some of that I Phone advertising which covers the walls to make some room for the pre.

Back when I had the Treo 600,650,etc Palm would initially release these models on Sprint. Then about 3-6 months later they would release an unlocked GSM version that you could buy directly from Palm USA.
Hope they continue that trend.

O2 pretty good with 3G coverage on the iPhone (a lot better than vodafone my last network) so they will dominate having boath the iPhone and the Pre on their network

Verizon and Sprint are MUCH better than AT&T and T-Mobile in the states, no one really misses the two major US GSM carriers if the nice phones are available on Verizon and Sprint. *HINT: Get the iPhone Verizon*

@Fractal the Meek: Anyone who travels out of the Americas since that requires a GSM phone. Verizon and Sprint are starting to get dual *DMA/GSM phones but they are limited.

Of the two carriers, only AT&T works inside my home, a few miles from downtown Tampa, FL. T-Mobile is a no-show.

Our bill is $110 for two phones on an AT&T family plan with one of the phones an iPhone and the other an aged SE Walkman.

@Phillip Drummer: 2100 is quite the world standard the last time i checked. most recent phones come with triband UMTS anyway, with 2100 almost always present.

The 3G bands in Europe are different from US carriers i thought? T-mobile running on 2100 and at&t using 850/1900. I dont remember the exact European band.

@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: Most of the complaints have been about small hardware issues. Like the slider becoming "wobbly" or some dead pixels on the screen. But like most other things on the internet, it's good to take them with a grain of salt.

Are the 3G bands compatible? We've got AT&T because the other adult in the house is a Mac person with an iPhone. As a linux person, the iPhone is useless to me. I'd buy the Pre in a heartbeat.

@thereij: Really? I was in the same position but ever since its release, I actually haven't the amount of positivity about the Pre that I had expected. I've actually been hearing quite a few negatives. Shifting back towards iPhone.
