Nokia Surge Not Quite As Tasty As The Delicious Soft Drink

One of the weirder lookin’ phones Nokia’s pooped out, the Surge is a standard Symbian S60 dealio, with a browser that whips out Flash Lite (aka suck it, everybody else) and JuiceCaster social networking-ma-jig. BG wasn’t thrilled with it. $US80.

AT&T and Nokia Ride a Social Wave into Summer with the Nokia Surge

New Symbian S60 Handset Offers Social Style with Smartphone Capabilities at a Low Price

Now you can carry your clique with you in your pocket. AT&T* and Nokia today announced the availability of the Nokia Surge, a socially supercharged smartphone powered by the nation’s fastest 3G network. Available online and in AT&T stores on July 19, the Nokia Surge is an ideal device for active consumers who like to stay connected whether using IM, text or email, sending multimedia messages, AT&T Video Share, or updating and connecting via their favourite social networks.

With a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard in a slim, stylish design and Symbian S60 multi-tasking capabilities, Nokia Surge is the ideal smartphone for today’s customer who is always in touch with their social circle. A recent survey commissioned by Nokia revealed that people are so hooked on staying in touch that they would rather give up coffee and sweets than live without their mobile for two weeks.**

In addition to an impressive suite of messaging capabilities, the Nokia Surge offers a powerful browsing experience, including Flash support to view most sites in full HTML or watch YouTube videos. Nokia Surge allows users to post messages, images, videos, and comments to web sites like Facebook on-the-go with the pre-installed JuiceCaster application.

“Launching at $US79.99 with a complete email solution, downloadable applications and full HTML browser with Flash support, Nokia Surge hits the sweet spot between a quick messaging phone and a smartphone because of its low-price and strong feature set.” said Michael Woodward, vice president, Mobile Phone Portfolio, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets.

“Designed in the U.S., this socially charged smartphone comes in a sleek slide form factor that supports social networking and messaging – and all on an open platform,” said David Petts, vice president and general manager, AT&T Account, Nokia. “Together with AT&T, we’re excited to address the increasing demand for smartphones with a device that’s as attractive to the customer as it is to his or her wallet.”

The Nokia Surge offers multimedia and entertainment features, including:

* 2.0 megapixel camera – Customers can capture quality photos with colour camera and 4X digital zoom
* AT&T Navigator – AT&T Navigator provides audible turn-by-turn directions, monitors traffic and alerts users when there is a slowdown or incident
* AT&T Mobile Music – Customers can listen and download their favourite music from Napster Mobile, eMusic Mobile, XM Radio and more over the air
* AT&T Video Share — The first-ever service in the U.S. that allows users to share live video over wireless devices while participating in a voice call
* JuiceCaster – Customers can share videos and pictures from their wireless device to the Web’s most popular sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr

The Nokia Surge will be available through select AT&T retail locations or at www.wireless.att.com for $US79.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a mail-in rebate. (Pay $US129.99 and after mail-in rebate receive $US50 AT&T Promotion Card. Two-year agreement for wireless voice plan of $US39.99 a month or higher and data plan of $US30 a month or more required for rebate.) For more information, please go to www.att.com. I miss Surge. I still have a can of it in the fridge in memorium.

    It was what Slurm in Futurama was based on. Addictive, kind of thick and gluey, neon coloured...

    WHY?? WHY DID THEY DISCONTINUE IT???

    *sobs uncontrollably*

  • loriensleafs

    but was Surge better then Jolt??

    loriensleafs

  • Fayez_Butts

    That really is the ugliest phone I have ever seen in my life

    @bededog: Surge was great. It was the archetype for Vault and all these other energy drinks... begone with your blasphemous rhetoric

    @bededog: FOOL!

    Surge was an amazing drink, which died too soon. :(

    @2DaysTillTheState_GitEmSteveDave: You weren't in possession of an f-ray flashlight perchance? Owww, my sperm!

    @NurseDave: Only reason I can possibly think of is that they might not force you into the full data plan.

    @bededog: "sucked so..."

    Much?
    Loudly?
    Badly?
    Perfectly?
    I didn't drink it?
    I only used it to brush my teeth?
    Put it in other people's stockings at Christmas?

    @2DaysTillTheState_GitEmSteveDave: In alll honesty, I do prefer Slurm.

  • NurseDave

    So, if you're with AT&T you would be buying this instead of an iPhone because....?

    @bededog: Shut yo mouth!

  • 2DaysTillTheState_GitEmSteveDave

    Somewhere in my house, I still have a winning cap for a Surge Alarm clock I stupidly never sent in. While working the midnight shift at a gas station, I learned how to pick winning bottles out. Surge was just awesome.

  • bededog

    I'd say it's about as delicious as Surge. Then again, Surge sucked so...

  • Jonhy

    I have the cheap data plan currently, why do these new phones require the more expensive data plans for no reason? I can get an unlocked phone and not have to pay more.

  • despisethesun

    @Xeno: Nope, in the article they mention needing both a $40 voice plan and a $30 data plan to get the $50 rebate that brings this phone down to $80. Without the data plan, this thing is a ridiculous $130.

  • despisethesun

    I said the same thing over at BGR, but it bears repeating. At $30-50, this thing could clean house against phones like the LG Neon. At $80, this thing is competing with iPhone refurbs and is within spitting distance of the price of an E71x (actually more expensive before rebate). If you pick this over either of those phones, you picked wrong.

  • The guy who loves those Big-Ass-

    @TheWerewolf - Causing headlines!: Surge was great. As was Mountain Dew Code Blue... I have no idea where that went...

    I have to fight for all I have left, Baja Blast. Even while you can only get it at Taco Bell... I hear rumors of them discontinuing it. Life without Baja Blast is unimaginable.

  • TheStateOnDVD2Day_GitEmSteveDave

    @Xeno: Huh, didn't hurt that time.

  • Jrsy Devil's Food Cake®

    @Xeno: It's very annoying that AT&T has decided to spread this 'mandatory $30 dataplan' on phones other than the iphone. They started with the E71x and now it looks like this one is next..

  • Dr. Evil Genius

    @Cordfucious of Tech Clan: +1 for you!

  • Dr. Evil Genius

    @NurseDave: LOL

  • Dr. Evil Genius

    @despisethesun: If you look at the plan they want you to get, you would save a lot more money in the long run just paying the $130 up-front.

  • Dr. Evil Genius

    @NurseDave: As much as I hate iAnything, I have to agree with you on this one.

  • Dr. Evil Genius

    @Fayez_Butts: I am guessing you haven't seen too many phones...

    IMO, this device is marketed to stupid people who want to believe they're smart. The form factor reminds me of a Swiss version of the Sidekick - another device marketed to stupid people.

  • Dr. Evil Genius

    @loriensleafs: In a word, yes.

  • Dr. Evil Genius

    @TheWerewolf - Causing headlines!: Yup! I was attracted to it and weirded-out by it when it was released.
