Nokia Patent Hints At Wearable Input Sleeve That Reacts To Skin

Nokia is really getting their ass handed to them in the smartphone market, and this remote input sleeve patent hints at one way the company is thinking about the future.

The idea, of course, is to use wearable electronics to control the UI across a range of gadgets—but I’ll be dammed if I need to wear a glove or some sort of band aid to control my devices. It’s just not practical. On the other hand, glasses or a ring might be ok, because these are things you might wear all the time. [Unwired View]

Eventually the computer will fit into the ring used to recognize gesture input, or the glasses used to display it.

@NastyInThePasty: That gave me an incredible visual of a downtown street at lunchtime with everyone checking their e-mails.

It really annoys me that these articles never cite the actual patent application number, and then just show some pretty pictures which often have little bearing on the scope of the invention, it's just sloppy journalism.

Doesn't anyone remember Nintendo's Power Glove? Glove-type accessories are an over complication of the most basic input device: the hand. It was a bad idea then and guess what....... still a bad idea. If this patent becomes reality, I'm going to invent a remote control for cell phones, because this product would prove that there is an apparent abundance of lazy suckers out there with disposable income.

    It's Megan Fox's toe/thumb!

Besides that, the illustrations really make it look like the finger condoms are cutting off the circulation to the digits and those glasses will get you beaten up.

If its wireless technology produces enough energy to generate a visible lightning bolt, I'll stay away. Far, far away.

Hey, I see a hardsuit control system in there. Imagine those in a full body suit reacting to not just major motions but minor ones as well. BUSTER BEAAAAAAM!!!

"and this remote input sleeve patent hints at why this company is completely screwed."

I love a good finger wrap, but since I use my cellphone all the time I would always have to wear a goofy restricting bandage.

@monoverb: well if we're lucky the first line of the devices will have shotty wiring and they'll spill their starbucks all over their new stuff and get a nice little shock

  • MacPatrick

Ahhh yes..... one step closer to iCondom.

I want to know if thats the actual pic that they sent in with the patent or if that was drawn by some 16 year old in his basement....either is equally plausible.

  • NastyInThePasty

I for one hope it ends up being a system of hula hoops
