More Analysis On The Korean Rocket Launch

Really interested in what kind of nuclear rocket capability North Korea has? The Bulletin does a really in-depth analysis of the latest launch, based on released and carefully reasoned interpolated data.

It’s quite interesting, with well-thought-out logic that points to NK obtaining parts and knowledge from Russia. In short, they probably don’t have quite as good a capability for delivering the payload as previously thought. [The Bulletin]

  • Barion

@compuguy1088: The jig is up for North Korea the moment war resumes, and the North Koreans know it. They know they can hurt South Korea and Japan pretty badly, but that the end result will be crushing defeat. So all the saber rattling is a big bluff hoping no one ever calls them on it.

However, the threat that NK might sell its nuclear weapons capability to other rogue states, or terrorists, is a major problem.

@AnonJr: Yeah. Jason Chen seems to be too confident.

@MrBlahBlah: Yeah, we were going to Hawaii until my mom read about this a while back. Now we're going to the Virgin Islands.

@MinervaAutolycus: Maybe that IS how LOST ends . . .

  • Magic Beans? Sure, I'll Buy Some

@Babboa: Funny, that's when my 401(k) fully vests. Coincidence? I think not. Meh!

Magic Beans? Sure, I'll Buy Some!!

  • MinervaAutolycus

If NK explodes a nuke in California's atmosphere, the air pollution will keep it from hitting the ground. Now, nuking Hawaii -- that's the tragedy. How will we ever know how LOST ends?

  • something_unique_and_descriptive

Given their past success rate with the Taepodong-2 rockets (the ones with the potential to reach the US) I'm feeling pretty safe here in Washington State.

My guess would be that they wouldn't risk loosing one of their nukes on a missile which currently has a 100% failure rate by trying to target the US Mainland. Far more likely that they would target our allies in the region, that means Japan and South Korea would be in the most danger.

@GustavoSM: Antartica? Just wait until the Australians and New Zealanders begin a blood feud over ice ownership. Or wait Argentina might try to invade something owned by another country that has a vastly superior military than it again, but hey just some conjectures.

  • heroineworshipper

Now if David Wright and Theodore A. Postol actually snuck into N. Korea & got photos themselves instead of creating this copy of a Goog search, that would be something.

@MrBlahBlah: Locals with fireworks are a bigger danger. Seriously, it's like a war zone here on the 4th. They're freakin' crazy!

  • compuguy1088

@Thrubeingcool: Hes right though...the missiles are just bargaining chips for North Korea. If they actually tried to invade, they would be retaliation....

    compuguy1088

  • The Analrapist

It funny they can't reach us today but in 6 months or a year or 2 years then sure they can the president will still be sending strongly worded letters and calling off ship for fear of offending someone. The missile doesn't really have to reach Hawaii, Alaska or Cali just explode in the atmosphere.

  • WMyers

@tok3ninja: Hawaii is probably safe. They might be able to hit Alaska though...it's a bigger target.

once you look at this [www.cracked.com] you will never see NKorea the same way again.

Of course, all the money will end up in politicians pockets, so it won't help much in the defense line...

Blah blah blah NK will never attack us.

I am glad to see a map that accounts for the roundness of the Earth though, the last post with the big round circles was driving me nuts.

@puffnstuff: Yeah that wouldn't be boy who cried wolf though.

Boy that cried wolf would be Hawaii always saying they're getting hit with nuclear weapons and not really being hit with nuclear weapons so that when they finally are we'll all ignore them.

  • Thrubeingcool

The NK regime is evil, also stupid, and they may even be crazy, but I don't think they're suicidal. The better clinical descriptor is paranoid, which means preoccupation with survival in any circumstances - even imagined ones. Thus launching an unprovoked strike on any country in their neighbourhood, all of which are nuclear armed or allied to a nuclear power, would mean immediate and massive retaliation leading to their destruction. See the whole point of having the bomb is not to set off the damn things. That's strictly last resort. Really you just want to wave them around so people take you seriously. Considering NK has nothing else going for it, they are waving them around all they can.

It just takes 1 to kill millions of people. But then again KJI is too smart to send a nuke. He's too much into his LV and Gucci to want to kill himself. He's just doing that 'NK is still a threat' biznatch so that people don't look down on his son and think he's gonna be a softie when he comes into power. Boom boom pow!
