More About Buying A Printer Than You Possibly Wanted To Read

The bottom line of Bill Howard’s epic consideration of a new colour laser printer is that cheap printers can cost more over their lifetime than nicer, slightly pricier printers, so you might as well get a good one. [Gearlog]

That research is based on the faulty assumption that all laser printers require new cartridges everytime the ink runs out. This is untrue, as there are many laser printers whose cartridges can easily be opened with a screwdriver, and refilled with appropriate inks.

I have a black and white Samsung ML20 laser printer that cost $120, and I’m on the third refill of the cartridge (I got the ink from ebay for $15, and still have enough left for 3 more refills). I’d love to do the math on how much it will cost me to print out 50,000 pages and whether or not this is cheaper than buying a more expensive laser printer, but I can’t be bothered ;)
