I said this on Kotaku and I will say it here. DO NOT WANT! The only thing of any value to me in this is the free COD download which I am trying to figure out if that might come with the hardened version.

Alternating modes you say? Maybe they'll have something 3d, or invisible messages in the game you can only see with the goggles.

The way I'm going to be using those night vision goggles, I hope they can stand a beating from an angry woman.

But yeah, this seems really... stupid. Maybe Activision is trying to see how much people will pay for something that has totally no use but is vaguely related to their games? Next up, implants in the next Tomb Raider special edition. Now that will sell.

I think the goggles are just the new version of the eyeclops night-vision toy that was announced a little while back (remember that $79 NVGs? The new ones are supposed to sell for $50 and be less "alien-y").

YOu can alternate between normal B&W and the NVG "green" effect...

I didn't think I wanted this, but the more I think about it...the more I can see I could use those night vision goggles at night when I have to go out and turn the sprinklers off.

@nutbastard: I believe the goggles are monocular in design (only one sensor, not one per eye), and are probably using older technology, hence the absolute hugeness. My prediction is that the goggles may be $70 by themselves, maybe even less, which leads to $120 to $130 for the final bundle.

it's going to be at least $200-something. night vision's gotten cheap, but not that cheap.

regardless, i'm in, as long as we can get some specs on the goggles beforehand, or it turns out to be under $120.

But won't the night vision goggles be damaged by leaving them out like that? It's usually important to keep light out of the tubes. I suppose they don't expect you to actually use them.

I'm assuming they're going to be GEN 1 Night vision goggles, as GEN 2 and higher are abusively expensive for a video game.

With GEN1 you can see ok if there's a lot of ambient light or a half moon or greater, but for the most part you MUST use the IR if you want to see anything clearly. Great for scanning your yard, or watching animals in the dark, but one thing to note - the IR does not go through windows.

Just trying to save you pervs some money...

@Rhainor: Yea, you can see the ir leds when he turns the front towards the camera. There's probably not much inside that big assed housing. Small cheap ass camera you can pick up for $12 on fleabay and a small display.

Gen 1 Night vision goggles are not extremely expensive. My guess for the prestige edition cost anywhere from $159 to $259.

Definately cool, might get it, depending on price.

don't think this has been mentioned yet. Seems to me this game will not just be in snow but also in Brazil. As that's where the favellas are. So i'd guess we are looking at some fighting in brazilian slums and possibly brazilian jungles. sounds dope. ya heard it here first.

"Alternating modes" probably refers to the fact that you can have just the light amplification, or turn on the infrared LED array for even more visibility.

Some surveillance cameras have similar IR LEDs. Since human eyes can't see near-IR light, but digital camera sensors can (and thus can translate it into the visible spectrum for playback), they make the perfect source of non-visible illumination.

Don't know about anyone else but I think I saw LEDs on the front of the goggles. Seems like they're the lesser-quality infrared LED ones, though not paying 500 dollars for a game is nice.

Looks like the prestige edition is going to run about $150. Or so says wikipedia. For that price I'd imagine that these use the same technology as those headbands that have flashlight holders in them. Only maybe with green filters for the flashlights. Then again, I can't see the video at work. Maybe they've got some crappy infrared camera parts in there or some ancient-ass Gen 1 NVG technology.
