Maybe it has something to do with Windows Azure, a product that Microsoft says will be out by the end of the year: http://www.microsoft.com/azure

@Zordon: first off why so much nay-saying about chrome? I use it every day at home and work and it works splendidly. I had many great extensions for firefox but barely missed them. I work as a web developer and love the fact that Chrome/Webkit is so standard compliant as well as the speed! Firefox takes ages to start up now it seems.

Chrome is still in development and the underlying ability to add extensions are already there they just need to work on making a decent interface for it.

Honestly the only thing Chrome completely lacks is built in RSS but I mean...Google Reader makes up for that pretty well...I personally do not use RSS much so its not biggie to me.

If you tried an early version of Chrome I recommend trying it again, many improvements have been made.

Still waiting on Microsoft to release a completely new OS...Midori, anyone?

  • diabolusunknownTheSecond

@Gonzie: Even if it is a similar announcement, you do know Microsoft was talking about a Web OS for a long time now.

    Windows Azure is its base.

  • Mr.Gawn

Google chrome is tight... but doesnt have a lot of preference changing......

IT IS.. THE WAY IT IS.. ITS LIKE THAT.. AND THATS THE WAY IT IS....

i would give it second place to firefox... with IE trailing in 10th

@PhineasJW: From the article this article links to...

"Google says that Chrome OS is intended for "power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems.""

    So no, you're wrong there.

  • Hiphopopotamus

@asnpcwiz: I'm still waiting for my Chip's Challenge Expansion Pack!

@nikkor: Google buys Microsoft. Then Apple buys Google and owns the world. And no more stupid PC Hunter commercials.

    lancec50

  • PhineasJW

@Valnen: Chrome OS is only targeted at netbooks. Most people run games on desktops and laptops.

  • Valnen

@phor11: Exactly. Not interested unless every game that works with windows also works with this new OS.

  • GlenTen

@OMG! Ponies!: Like the Huffington post Obama question? I agree.

  • KeepingTheForeName_GitEmSteveDav

@Zordon: Whenever I hear that word, that's the FIRST thing that comes to my mind. And when I hear ANAL, I think, "Am Not A Lawyer".

  • Zordon

@Valnen: Open source operating system + Google's money and backing = good thing no matter what you thought about the browser.

It's an OS. It has to be expandable and be as open as Windows is, or else it will be relegated to the market share percentage of OSX and other linux distros.

    Zordon

  • Navin R Johnson

@Hiphopopotamus: It's about time. I thought it would NEVER happen!

  • phor11

@Con Seannery: Unless they found a way to turn Linux into a gaming powerhouse OS, I'm not holding my breath.

  • Zordon

@anexanhume: Rectum? Damned near killed 'im!

    Zordon

  • Valnen

@Valnen: The web browser that is. Somehow I think their OS won't be any better. I can just see it now, advertisements on your desktop.

  • Valnen

I used Chrome and I thought it sucked. I'll stick with Firefox with Adblock Plus and Noscript. When Chrome has that functionality, it will be a good browser. But that will never happen since Google wants it's precious ad money.

  • brobot

    @Doug Berger:

    it doesn't...

...who said anything about Snow Leopard at all?

Are you lost, my friend? here, let me offer you some guidance.

Google's announcement of the Chrome OS has been the day Microsoft has been dreading for years, and is the single reason why they have been fighting tooth and nail to beat them down. Or was it Netscape that they originally feared would evolve into an OS from a web browser? I can't remember now... but anywho here it is happening finally and they are peeing in their pants.

Micro$oft announces Net*Bob, a super user friendly operating system, built on top of the famous Bob user interface. "We bring the ease of use of Bob and the security of Vista together for a unique end user experience." says a MS PR representative. "The comic sans font and the room metaphor works nicely with the small screens of netbooks."

When asked about processor and memory requirement for Net*Bob, MS spokeperson says "We have taken into account the slightly longer time required for our targeted user base to find the pointer on the smallish screen. Any application slowness will not be noticeable to the average user."

  • Letao

@Julian Irwin: Could it BE using any more RAM? I don't THINK so!

    @Digital9: you mean 640x480

  • facepuncher

@nikkor: i don't see that happening. Google would be worth a lot of money, and microsoft wouldn't have bothered with Bing if they were considering it.

  • anexanhume

@SetDipSwitchesTo_GitEmSteveDave: That's one way to put it. Surprised it made it out from under alive.

@headc4se: Linux "based" operating system. It uses the Linux kernel. My apologies.

  • Lance eagles3strong

@lancec50: I just shat myself. That was hilarious.

  • jmortj5

Next gen IE, cd/flash bootable standalone. They already have a ton of apps that can be used online, really all they'd need is a standalone bootable browser.

  • joelydanger

@SetDipSwitchesTo_GitEmSteveDave: oh SteveDave you're making me blush.

  • headc4se

@facepuncher: I wanna say that you forgot the /sarcasm but one can never really be sure. Having said that, are you serious? An OS for an OS? If you did forget the /sarcasm, please forgive me for the pain killers dull my wits.

M$ has already unoffically announced their next OS thats not based off Windows..it's a Virtual Based OS..mostly likely be released 2011.

  • OMG! No, Please!

@ScottRose: I'm guessing it's a light-weight web browser that includes built in email functions, office-like tools, video/audio decoding, and ad-blocking, all without using external applications, codecs or plug-ins.

  • facepuncher

@thechansen: Did you read the post? Google Chrome OS is an operating system for Linux.

  • Gonzie

i'll believe it when i see it, could easily be another "me too, me too" effort

  • Maori_Yelir

@ScottRose: I expect it to be a cloud OS that lets you use a browser as Windows 7 loads in the back round. So instead of being stuck on a loading screen you can check that email quick and then jump to your desktop when you close it.

  • curbnoise

    If you read Scobles post:

"Why did Google announce Chrome OS this week? Well, of course, Microsoft has a big announcement coming on Monday (I'm embargoed)."

He's basically saying that google wanted to steal some of Win 7's thunder... As in, whoopee, there's a new version of Windows. We'll pave 'em under with Chrome OS...

    curbnoise

  • thechansen: Can we start calling

@SewerShark: Windows 7 is an internet browser?? Yeah first thing I did after installing 7: downloaded google chrome, installed google chrome, and then deleted IE8 and Windows Media Player.

  • curbnoise

No, the "big" announcement is Windows 7 is RTM... July 13th has been on the radar as the RTM date for a while.

    curbnoise

  • Digital9

Bringing back windows 3.1? People love retro crap. I mean I'd buy it and wear throw-back jerseys while I do my mobile computing in sweet sweet 800x600 16bit quality.

    Digital9

  • lancec50

Windows 7 is going to be open source

    lancec50

  • nikkor

Solution? Microsoft buys Google. MS to Google: "You're about to revolutionize the OS... We can't let you do that."

  • Hiphopopotamus

    MINESWEEPER 2.0!!!!!!

  • chrisaroz

It's a long shot, but I wonder if it has anything to do with the Gazelle browser talked about on Cnet this week.

    chrisaroz

  • SewerShark

@darkstar: Windows 7 have already been announced

    SewerShark

  • ScottRose

Why did Google announce Chrome OS this week? Well, of course, Microsoft has a big announcement coming on Monday (I'm embargoed).

    That's pretty damb vague.

I'd frankly be shocked if MS does a cloud-based OS to compete with its own Win7. Do they even have any significant web-based app offerings to act as desktop app replacements?

  • Julian Irwin

    Bing OS?? Shoot me.

    Julian Irwin

  • KeepingTheForeName_GitEmSteveDav

I was under Embargo once. It was worth it. She's one hell of a woman.

  • Doug Berger

And ... how does this relate to OS X's Abominable Snowman?

    Doug Berger

  • darkstar

    Maybe it's a competent browser.
