Finally! It’s been a long time coming, but Lucasarts has released a version of its all-time classic adventure The Secret Of Monkey Island for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You fight like a dairy farmer!
The app is actually a scaled down version of the new Special Edition version that was released for PC and Xbox Live recently, so it looks fantastic. Early reviews on the app store say that the pointing controls need a bit of work, but who cares! It’s Monkey Island on the iPhone!
My only concern is that it costs $10. Which wouldn’t necessarily be too much to pay, except for the fact that I just forked out for the game on Xbox Live last week. As much as I love Monkey Island, I don’t think I love it enough to buy it twice over the course of a fortnight.
But still – here’s hoping that LucasArts jumps on this big time and starts releasing all the old SCUMM games officially. I’ve got a hankerin’ for some Day of the Tentacle!

Friday, July 24, 2009 at 10:52 AMWait, what? Special Edition? Recently released? WHY WASN’T I INFORMED!? I knew about the upcoming episodic from TellTale, but I had no idea the original was re-released.
Must purchase now…

Friday, July 24, 2009 at 11:18 AMI’ve been enjoying Telltale Games’s new Tales of Monkey Island ( http://www.telltalegames.com ) as well.
The problem with SoMI:SE is that it’s now available in the following places: XBLA, Steam, Direct2Drive (US & Canada only) and iPhone. None of which are avenues that I have, nor want. Why can’t they just sell it to everyone everywhere (for PC) without this extra crap like Steam?
Anyway… for those wanting to play the old LucasArts games, there is already a version of ScummVM for the iPhone (http://www.scummvm.org) so you should be able to play those games on your jailbroken iphone if you have the originals on PC :)

Friday, July 24, 2009 at 11:28 AMIt’s the kind of title that will only ever make money as a download title. The extra cost involved making a boxed copy would kill it’s profitability.

Friday, July 24, 2009 at 3:29 PMAll this can already be played with the scummvm emulator as Molokov stated, for free and at full speed kids, no need to wait for a paid version lol… Sierra also made another all time great title in the land of the lounge lizards. Very old games.
