LucasArts Bringing Old School Adventure Games To iPhone?
This is a dream come true. During an interview with Joystiq, LucasArts CEO Darrell Rodriguez “hinted” that they’re looking at bringing their old point and click adventure games to the iPhone. That is, if you classify saying, “wink wink, nod nod” about such a scenario as hinting.
This comes off the back of Lucasarts announcing that some of their classic adventure games, like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and Loom. will be available on Steam. But all that fails to compare with the potential for point and click retro gaming on the iPhone.
His actual quote is laced with goodness:
“On iPhone, you know Apple’s policy that we can’t talk about a release until it’s ready to release. But it would make sense that we would do something like that if we were to go in that direction … wink wink, nod nod.”
I’ve been raving since I first got my iPhone that the old SCUMM games are perfectly suited to the iPhone, so this has seriously made my day. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to play some Zac McCraken and the Alien Mindbenders on their iPhone? Hopefully we’ll see these games land in the iTunes store sooner rather than later.

Ive been doing that since I first got one, copied my old Fate of Atlantis & Sam and Max CDROMs straight over… mind if i drive? not if you don’t mind me clawing at the dash and screaming like a cheerleader.
Exactly what I was going to say. LucasArts have realised that this is another way to rake in millions from dead IP (read: Monkey Island XBLA) and I bet they are going to send a letter to ScummVM very soon saying something along the lines of this:
“Hey puny humans,
We know that ScummVM allows you to play your own purchased games on a number of devices and doesn’t really infringe on any copyrights, but we made another version and since it is our IP, if you have to stop distributing yours we will find a reason to sue you.
Thanks,
Your new Overlords.”
If they bring out Full Throttle or Sam & Max i’m all over that shit.
Fate of Atlantis is one of the best computer games ever. Story beats graphics every time.
The story, characters, variety of puzzles, voice acting are all superb. One of my favourite things is the relationship between Indy and Sophia, it really gives it an added richness you rarely see in PC games.
This adds another reason for me to buy the iPhone.
Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Sam & Max… fantastic.
Untill LucasArts lift the Mac-Embargo then they are not only missing a trick, but are being royal dicks! I’m so annoyed that they seem to ignore Mac OS X. Thankfully the boys at ScummVM show the mac some love and there is a Mac port of their fantastic emulator.
As for the iPhone release of Secret of Monkey Island SE to the AppStore, its not here on the launch day of the PC and XBLA version, so yet again I feel a second class LucasArts fan. They are really testing my loyalty. Myself, i did buy the games and have all the disks for ScummVM proposes but I dont blame people sticking it to the big company anymore, not while they discount a massive portion of the fan base!
I want to fight like an iCow Pro and have an iPhone with a Pulley in the middle. But i dont want to jail break my handset to do it.
