Louis Vutton Watch Has ‘Mysterieuse’ Floating Hands

When does a watch cost as much as a house? When it’s the gravity defying $US250,000 Louis Vuitton Tambour Mysterieuse Calibre LV115 apparently.

The focus of the design lies in its transparent face with a mechanism that appears to float in the centre. However, the secret to this magical feature is actually quite simple—the hour and minute hands are supported by two transparent sapphire disks. The watch is also capable of running for up to eight days on a single winding.

Yeah, $US250,000 is a lot to spend on a watch, but there are some perks to the purchase—each watch can be customised in whatever way the customer sees fit and it comes with a mini steamer trunk to keep it safe. Meh, I would still rather have the house. [Luxury Insider via Tuvie via DVICE]

Two hundred and fifty *thousand* dollars? I can buy two houses with that amount. Two houses. Ludicrously expensive vanity stuff make me angry. Don't get me started on the ugly-ass Vertu cellphones, and all sorts of unsightly Swarovsky crystal studded items.

My first thought was 'heyyyy, that's not french for mysterious' i think it would have sounded way better as mystérieux.

How does it wind ? Shouldn't the winding axle be visible ? Intriguing, I'll have to pick one up to demoli ... investigate it

Meh, I'll just wait for the Chinese ripoff. :P

How does it wind ? Shouldn't the winding axle be visible ? It's not using a mirror because then you'd see the hands as well . Intriguing, I'll have to pick one up to investigate ...

transparent, floating design? great, looks fantastic in that shot but as soon as you put it on your wrist it becomes "hey look, I can see my arm hair through my watch! and it only cost me $250,000" slightly less than cool

What's not to get? It's like any piece of jewelery.. really? you thought that a diamond ring or necklace has a functional purpose?.. at least this watch tells time.
  • something_unique_and_descriptive
@ar7983: Most of your high end watch collectors have a distinct love for engineering and craftsmanship. Some of these things take decades to engineer, and years to assemble, by hand. Once you hit ~$100k you're out of blingy poseur territory and into investment pieces.

At 250K I don't want the illusion of levitation, I want actual levitation.
  • HoseHead
@InsidiousTuna: so are you thinking of picking up one of these watches to wear there then? ;-)
  • HoseHead
@iEro-Sennin: the purpose of a watching being to tell time the same way the purpose of a car is to transport you from point A to point B, or a house to shelter you from the elements, or clothing to do the same. To you and I it may seem ridiculous to spend a quarter million on a watch but then to someone in africa who lives on twenty bucks a month, a big mac would be a huge expense. high-end *anything* has nothing to do with functionality. go look at women's handbags for 40 grand at Hermes. and they don't even tell time!

I have a 1970 Zodiac self winding mechanical watch with floating hands, nothing new about that. But my Zodiac is only worth less than 1/10th as much and looks nicer.

@iEro-Sennin: A wristwatch is always "right there" and can be viewed instantly, unlike a phone or other gadget which may be in your pocket, or charging, or closed.... All it takes is a quick glance at my wrist - and I can use my hands for something else at the same time. You oughtta try one some time.

@ar7983: No, if you have the disposable income. You say it isn't fashion but is a vain attempt to feign confidence, but that is what fashion *is*. What brought the global economy to its knees wasn't spending money. It was borrowing money you can't pay back. Jealous much?

@Hello Mister Walrus: I'm not knocking capitalism - in fact, I'm a business owner and CEO myself. However, for all of the good things that capitalism has provided us, there are downsides. I'm knocking irresponsible and obviously over-inflated pricing on things that serve no tangible or legitimate purpose or goal, especially when an obvious result of that kind of capitalism is the production of inappropriate spending.

Does the watch come with the neato LV case with wallet and other great LV stuff. I think this belongs in a rap video, where the interior of the car is decked out in LV. Hmm...wheres Xzbit pimp my ride and make this the center armor rest console.

@iEro-Sennin: With the high end stuff is more about a love of design and engineering than practicality.

In the larger scheme of watches this isn't all that expensive. Take a look at what a Patek Philippe Sky Moon Toubillon or Vacheron Constantin Tour de l'Ile.

  • InsidiousTuna
@iEro-Sennin: I work in an office where I have to lock my phone in a safe, there's not a computer at the desk I use half the time, and there are no clocks in the room. I like being able to tell time all the time.
  • InsidiousTuna
Not a fan. It looks cool, but it also looks way too space-age to me to wear on a daily basis. I can't imagine ever wearing any other watch besides the silver-and-black 'lex my grandfather left me.
  • Kaiser-Machead
@World's Greatest Mactard!: I wouldn't want anything so volatile and deadly strapped to my wrist.

    Kaiser-Machead

  • ar7983
Isn't it incredibly irresponsible to spend $250k on a watch? The sheer concept of a watch at that value is ludicrous. That kind of purchase isnt about fashion, and it's certainly not about practicality. It's a vain attempt to feign confidence, and it's really just indicative of the same kind of thinking that's brought our global economy to its knees.

    ar7983

  • World's Greatest Mactard!
@Kaiser-Machead: Well, Actually, if you must know... The hands are floating on a cloud of unicorn farts.

I have never desired any louis vuitton product, but I can say that I like the idea of a mini steamer trunk for my watches. Carrying them on extended voyages has always been a central occupation in my life, "as a luggage problem", that is.

@32ndnote: Sort of, just in a lessofadouchebag sense. Although, anyone who actually buys this can easily be called a douchebag.
  • Joaquin - got star?
@bosskev: the whole thing seems to be floating (not only the hands but the center piece too). At least that's what I understand: glass in both sides
  • Purple Monkey Dishwasher
@Kaiser-Machead: Yeah, for $250,000 you'd expect it to at least use magnets or something to levitate the center piece. I'm still not exactly sure how this thing works. If the hour and second hand are supported by sapphire disks, aren't they continuously scraping across them as they move?

    Purple Monkey Dishwasher

  • Kaiser-Machead
@bosskev: Your feeble eyes obviously can't see the thin strands of unicorn hair that bind the movements together.

  • iEro-Sennin

  • 32ndnote

    Bertone Zero77

  • bosskev
It must be one of those things that does not translate at all into a two-dimensional photo; I can't see anything special about these "floating" hands.
  • Kaiser-Machead
Very slick design, but the price sort of exacerbates my wallet's heart palpitations. Also, it looks like there's a tiny sentinel trapped in the middle portion of the face.

@ar7983: So the person/company that made the profit on this watch and employed the people that engineered, built, and marketed it will now just hoard all that money and won't spend any of it in the marketplace? Seems you don't understand capitalism.

I wish 250K was the price of a house. I have to move to Paris's region (close to a town called Velizy) I am having a hard time finding a three bedroom appartment for less than 450 000 $, houses (small one ) would be closer to a million.
