LaCie’s LaCinema Rugged HD Enclosure Outputs 1080p Video

I'm calling Shenanigans on LaCie. We use those HDDs at my work all the time, mostly for dumping P2 media and audio from the field (yes, we actually use them outside), and those things don't spin fast enough - I think they spin at 5200 RPM - to show a true HD stream. Great for data backup. Terrible for media streaming in Post.

Does it downconvert DTS?

Just how rugged is that drive? We took an older one apart at work. The outside is just a big rubber band. Once you get that off, the drive is inside a U-shaped piece of tin that is open on three sides. I can't see how anyone can call that "rugged" with a straight face and a clear conscience.

RUGGEDNESS IS USEFUL! not just going "into the woods", but if i wanna go over to my friends place to hang out, i can bring all of my movies with me and i dont have to worry about buying a case for the HDD. it seems more useful for peopel who want to carry around their movies for different TV's

Honestly, I highly doubt the bitrate capability, even if your video is properly compressed.

@diabloturbo: I highly doubt the viability of a product like this anyways. If it was so easy to use and workable as a "deliverable" format, then my post-production facility would be using stuff like this on a widespread scale. Since they're not, I call shenanigans.

can we get a screen shot of the UI? is it better than the 360 or the PS3?

Nice, tho I gotta point out LaCie's use of pseudo-French for their branded series is just wrong (cinema is a masculine noun, not feminine).

Ruggeidzed media center drive makes no sense at all, but these ruggedized HDDs are nice for in-field tapeless video workflow. Bus powered, nice and beefy.

I have the screenplay 500GB and it won't play some of my moves, and only sees about half of what's on there. When I plug it in to PC, the oc sees all items 380+, the menu in screenplay only shows 168 or so. Anyone have experience with this? My 360 will play them all (they reside on an internal PC drive and I stream the same files) but like I said the Iomega has a few glitches...???

only plays divx. upscale. great idea but not ready just yet. next gen should play MKV!!

sorry folks!!! dont get to excited. there web site dsnt say anything about 1080P, all it says is that it upscales to 1080i.. Great concept, let me know when you can get 1080P video

I have a WD 750 GB hard drive that I have hooked up to my PS3. I have about 60 movies in MP4 format as of now and the only thing this lacks compared to the LaCie (besides the ruggedness) is the upconvert fuctionality. I really wish PS3 would do the processing to upconvert.

Sounds cool. Would be great if i could hook it up to the internet and torrent with it as well and then just leave it permanently hooked up to my network and TV =]

For now i'll just stick to my PS3 and PS3 Media Server from my 1TB of downloaded goodies.
