IPhone 3GS Graphics Performance Benchmarked (Verdict: Significantly Faster)
The analysis was correct: the iPhone 3GS graphical abilities are significantly better than the iPhone 3G. Here’s how much better, according to OpenGL benchmarks:
* The CPU performance is Faster by 40-70%
* The fillrate* is 3x to 4x higher
* Texture effects and filters are about 10x faster
Keep in mind that it’s also running OpenGL1.x on the benchmark test, and iPhone 3GS can run OpenGL 2.x. The upside is that when games do get optimised or developed for OpenGL 2.x, that’s when your old phone will no longer be able to play them, or at least play them with better graphics. It’s pretty obvious once you play with the phone that it’s rendering your old games much faster, but it’s good to get it in quantitative form. [glbenchmark via Extremetech via Ubergizmo]

PLEASE PLEASE make an ipod touch version of this
@anonymousmonk: It is underclocked. But there is no need for the comparisons cause Apple, Palm and (Ewww) HTC. They are going to push out smartphones before the arguments get warms so, I sat, pick a brand and trade in each model+ a lil cash to stay current. They are the winners truly.

@moo083: You would think so but nope, the discounts are only elegible for new customers not old customers who canceled their contract and got a new one.
@Bruhaha: would cost me $600 to upgrade from the 3G (without having to restart my 2 year contract, that is). would you tell someone on the fence that it's truly $600 good? if so, maybe i'll consider.

@Dillinger23: With the 3GS, you don't have to do a restore, or clear out anything. You can just use the phone.
redman042
@Kayno: Yes, you will find moving between menus and apps, tapping in a text field to type, opening a web page, etc. to be WAY faster. It's night and day, truly. With the 3GS, lag pretty much becomes a non-issue. It's great. Well worth the upgrade for any heavy-duty iPhone user.

@OGHowie: It is NOT using S5PC100! where did you get that info? Probably a custom SoC based on S5PC100... probably something that isn't related to S5PC100, but definitely not S5PC100.
What I know is that it's using ARM Cortex A8 and probably SGX 5xx series for 3D.
As far as the benchmark goes, probably Apple has perfected their OpenGL driver... I'm comparing iPhone with i8910 (Omap3430) and iPhone2G have better number in 3D than i8910! But on the positive side, i8910 CPU is faster than 3GS. So Palm Pre potentially have faster CPU clock for clock, but the 3D number is still unknown. Some says that 3GS use SGX 535 which is better than SGX 530 found in Omap 3430.
I still believe that Pre have a bit of an edge in terms of raw hardware, but iPhone OS is better in accessing/extracting all that hardware power.

@Das-es: Yes, let's go back in time and argue about it. It's here now. You're never gonna buy an iPhone, so stay out of the kitchen.

@TheSonOfKrypton: What about the ipod touch 2g??
@TheSonOfKrypton: 3GS and Pre has same CPU. We aren't sure on GPU.
@whatne1wuddo: Ah, you're a step ahead of me. You're right.
@Kayno: BITCH! you stole my icon sorta!
@Jonathan Moll: Do you have 234529348752394857239485709234857938475 text message thread on it? Clear em out or do a restore.

@IHateiPhones: Nice one.
@Leonce: a little history, iPhone, months later, iPod Touch. No warning just BOOM.
@Mr Biggles_A Pirate against the tides: Blizz has been working on a client to check mail and deal with the AH on your mobile for awhile now. Check the site or the forums, it's on there somewhere.
@Das-es: If you consider the previous iPhones a Beta, then that makes every other phone on the market an Alpha. Would you rather wait 3 more years for something 90% the same as what was released this month?
me414697
@Das-es: Yeah, because at the time, the original iphone totally sucked and nobody wanted it or talked about it... wait...
Face it, technology advances. Just because there are checkboxes it missed (copy/paste, video, etc.), it was a completely revolutionary device, sold bunches, and shaped the market for the last few years. Every other company is still trying to create their iphone killer, and it's too late, just like the ipod killers before them. Granted, the 3GS wasn't a huge step forward, but I think it was enough that their strategy will continue to work, and they'll be able to keep upgrading next year.

@OGHowie: They are variants, so not exactly the same. & I believe the Pre is underclocked.

@captain.obvious:
Doh, I got it confused with the chipset.
Though the two phones share the same CPU and GPU, they run on different chipsets (iPhone: Samsung SoC S5PC100, Pre: TI OMAP 3430). However, this Samsung chipset is also capable of handling 720p video recording, streaming vid conferencing and even Dolby 5.1 audio processing, giving this hardware some serious future potential.
To Anyone on the fence about upgrading to the 3GS.
I was really disappointed when Apple announced the 3GS. I was looking for a new case design, hoping (unrealistically) for an OLED screen and so on.
So I was like "fuck that phone" and thought I would stick with 3G until next year. Well, I upgraded anyway and am SOOOO GLAD I DID!
Really, the 3GS makes the 3G just feel old and clunky. I underestimated how much the speed increase would affect my experience of using the iPhone, especially if you are someone who uses it A LOT, like I do. And the video rocks!
Just thought I would throw that out there for those still undecided. It didn't hurt that I didn't even have the 3G a full year, but still qualified for the lowest-priced upgrade.
Bruhaha
@IWantAiPhone: Nice try silly rabbit, but spamming your crappy half-assed piece of junk site under a different comment account just doesn't work. We here at Giz are a little smarter than that.
@tok3ninja: And yes I know it's streamed to the phone.

@OGHowie: you're out of your mind. the 3GS and pre both use the same ARM Cortex 8 at 600Mhz.

@Mondoz:
No. Just 3G and GPS.
@Leonce: A new iPod Touch will come along with other new iPods later.
June is iPhone month. September is iPod month.

Was there any CPU upgrade between the original iPhone and the 3G?
Mondoz
Good. At least they will have something fun to do while in between dropped calls...

@mykalt45: Lets just say.. the speed gives you another reason to use the phone all the time.. just bask in the experience of how muster and smoother everything looks.. The animations are so much better.. deleting.. fading in.. fading out. its worth upgrading..
Kayno
@Killjoy: Well, not yet anyway.
s0crates82
@Leonce:
except that apple has done ipod touches after iphones since day one. a new ipod will probably be making its way around in september.
Daniel Rosenthal
@ivealwaysgotmail10:
I don't think they are exactly the same processor. Same speed and RAM but different processors.
@TheSonOfKrypton: ??? The pre has the same exact processor and graphics chip and ram as the 3GS! idk wtf your talking about
ivealwaysgotmail10
@zeroprime: You are corrected!
Kayno
@iPhone and it still sucks
IHateiPhones
@oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...: Although from what I understand, to cancel an AT&T contract costs $175 on day one and it goes down $5 a month from there. So if you have had the contract for a year, you can still cancel for $115 and get a new contract in theory, for the normal cheap price and it'll be less than the 499 you mentioned...
moo083
@TheSonOfKrypton: I thought the 3GS and Palm Pre had the same processor, graphics and RAM. Correct me if I'm wrong.
zeroprime
@oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...: I doubt it. Apple would've announced it at the keynote. But I'm going to buy a 16-gigger tomorrow, so I'll feel really stupid if such a thing happens.
Leonce
@Jonathan Moll: This was a reply to mykalt45
Jonathan Moll
@mykalt45: It's incredibly faster just working around in menus and such. I didn't think it would be all that noticeable, but everything happens instantly.
Opening things like the SMS app is slow on 3g, that's one of the things that kept me away. On the 3GS, it's about 2 seconds for the texts to appear when you launch SMS app, so it's so much better.
Jonathan Moll
@Mr Biggles_A Pirate against the tides: Can't imagine AT&T allowing that to happen. Can you imagine the impact on the network if wow became available on iphone?
farcedude
@oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...: you'd be better off selling your 3G to offset the cost of the upgrade rather than having 2 devices.
@SysRq: ...and why would we want that?
@oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...:
HTC's look better than the Pre? Really? I've seen HTC's, and IMO, the Pre has a much nice interface that they do....The "Sense" interface of HTC's is really the only one that can compete with it.
@Mr Biggles_A Pirate against the tides: Sorry, but it can't.
@Mr Biggles_A Pirate against the tides: Yeah, they should totally put WoW on the iPhone. Then WoW players will be able to leave their homes.
@oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...:
I've run it with and without winterboard (jailbreak), and it is so sluggish compared to other phones and especially to the 32gb iPod Touch. I used my dad's this weekend, and it zooms through any response.
mykalt45
@mykalt45: You must be running winterboard, if not you need a restore. My virgin 3.0 install was really snappy on my 3G. As soon as I run some mobile substrate addons. performance in the toilette.
If i can play wow on the iphone even if its just to check the AH im buying a iphone today. please tell me it can play wow
pls....
Mr Biggles_A Pirate against the tides
SimCity is WAAAAY faster.
jriga
@TheSonOfKrypton: And if you add appearance to the list of benchmarks the Pre falls below any HTC. iPhone still on top though.
So, are you saying I won't have to wait forever to open menus like text and such? It is such a drag with the 3g waiting for menus to pop up.
mykalt45
But how does it OC under dry ice?
Sorry, repeat comment.
so logically a iPod Touch S should be out in the next couple months right? Id rather that than pay 499 to upgrade my 3G.
3GS>3G>Palm Pre.
At least in terms of horsepower. Or maybe that second inequality should be "greater than or equal to"? Ehhh....Fuck it.
