@Totalfixation: Programming on iPhone is reasonably easy. You have to learn the objective-C language first though, since other languages are not supported by the SDK, not even Java.

Oh, and you don't have to pay anything for the SDK, just when you decide you actually wanna sell your apps. Then it costs $99 a year.

You guys got the release notes slightly wrong. These notes about a closely matching simulator, Xcode, etc. are all left over from the 3.0 release - these are already implemented changes.

The real changes in 3.1 are few and subtle. I hope i'm not breaking my NDA by disclosing this, but here it goes: there are a few bugfixes, plus a new API for video capturing, and that's it - no other significant changes.

should i bother installing the 3.1 beta? what's supposed to be better?

@prunetracy: Most def. would break the jailbreak and unlock etc. no doubt in my mind.

@prunetracy: I think it would hinder would it not? They will most likely wait for 3.0 rather than having to release yet another break for 3.1 no? Curious. They are so damn good!! :-)

Thus another jailbreak will come after, but I see now why the Dev-Team waits on these. At least the 3.0 jailbreak and ultrasnow work VERY nicely!!

@prunetracy: It's really nothing new. MSFT makes closed betas available to their VIP's and MSDN subscribers.

According to the API changes doc, it seems to allow developers access to the video editing tools as well as some other functions.

3.1 download is a beta for paid up $99 devs only. The rest of us broke-ass punks will have to wait until it's final.

can't imagine why it wouldn't. my iphone 3.0 works pretty dang well. not many bug fixes i've found necessary.
i'd think the main purposes of 3.1 would be to break unauthorized tethering, as well as kill ultrasn0w

@vangorder: Rule of thumb: Assume all updates from apple break any kind of hacking. It's there job to do so.
