@MF350z: he's abusing the star privilege

@joefuu: Also, they changed the look of the grid - it's more square than rectangular now, and it seems that the icons load faster.

@Lite: is on a boat.: You know what? You're absoultely right. It's tough to convey sarcasm or not via the internet, but I'm completely serious. Got me!

@Lite: is on a boat.: Thank you for bumping post! And I was going to make this same reply except you beat me to it. I have an 'older' dell that originally came with XP. It's much newer than most "corporate" computers and I put Vista on it for shit's and giggles, and let me tell you IT SUCKED! And that's after a RAM upgrade. Basically any company that is going to upgrade from XP to Vista, or even 7, is going to have to upgrade their computer as well or it is just going to run so slow it won't even be usable.

Looks like the update further refines dock expose, it now shows any minimized windows... it's very slick. Haven't found anything else that stand out.

    Well, I'm waiting....

@AlexLand: As someone who manages an office full of Vista machines, I can tell you it is the bane of my existence in a corporate environment.

Well, any machine running PPC chips will be at least 3 years old, if not older and nearing the end of its useful life. Leopard still runs great, and doesn't suck. Just like XP doesn't suck.

Putting Vista on a 3+ year old machine would make the machine pretty fucking painful to use. Especially "Corporate" class machines which tend to be dog-ass-slow to begin with.

Hell, I'd rather put Windows Server 2008 on an old desktop machine than Vista. It'll run better, have a lower memory footprint, and have all the wonderful security features that Vista has.

Oh, and stop your whining about people with stars getting preference. This whole thread has been me bumping up people's posts even if they don't agree with them. Just because we have stars does not make us A) Morons or B) Tyrants.

Though I wouldn't mind being a nice warm and fuzzy space tyrant.

@MF350z: Well in that case I'll take one of those licenses and send 10 big ones your way. Anyway I am pretty excited about Snow Leopard and think it'll get me another year or so outta this iMac. As far as Windows 7 goes, I can't help but admire the fact that they finally seem to be doing a lot of things right with their OS. Only time will tell though.

Well, I've tried downloading it a few times now, and it doesn't seem to pass the verification for me - anyone else having the problem? It also seems to start the download at around 60MBs, which is weird.

@Lite: is on a boat.: I was under the impression that IT departments held off on vista til SP1. There was this little recession that made the idea of upgrading an OS (much less hardware too) laughable to most companies. I bet Windows 7 will have a slower adoption rate as well. Vista DOES suck, but it has a lot of IT tools and inherent security that makes sense to upgrade to IF you can get the funds to do so. Here's something to ponder. If OSX had any sort of adoption in corporate environments WHATSOEVER, do you think there would have been an outcry about snow leopard being intel only? Intel machines are relatively new, and upgrading a corporate environment from powerpc to intel computers would be a huge cash drain. This is a nice well reasoned post that no one will read because idiots with stars can post entire bullshit that supersedes everyone else. Damn it nick denton, it makes sense on sites like gawker where the funny people get stars, but not so much on gizmodo.

    Any word on what's new?

@mGARANDEUR1:while I get where you're coming from, snow leopard isn't intended to be as exciting from a consumer point of view - that's why it's only a $30 upgrade. What makes the win7 beta exciting is all the bells and whistles - in snow leopard's case those have been intentionally omitted (with a few exceptions, like the exposé improvements) in favor of stability and performance enhancements.
  • MF350z
Well I guess that make's sense then! lol
  • Lite: is on a boat.
@bruss147: Oh sure, stack the deck against Windows 7 why don't you!
  • Lite: is on a boat.
@MF350z: It's the first thing that pops into my head when someone says the word THEORY.

    Damn Joss Whedon!

And there are more and more theories/rumors/mumblings/liver transplants than usual lately about tablets. Even mention that Apple wants to debut Jobs' return AND a new product line together for maximum BOOM factor. So, my theory is that it's bunnies.
  • MF350z
@Lite: is on a boat.: That's a great point. But you would be able to actually upgrade both you mbp's for $49, not $60. There is a family pack upgrade that has 5 licenses codes in it for $49. So essentially you'd get to upgrade both your mbp's and 3 other leopard machines for $49.
  • SysRq
@Lite: is on a boat.: I've always thought that the Windows tiered system (basic, home, ultimate, whatever they are) was utter bull for the reasons you just described: paying full upgrade price to go from one fully featured OS to a glorified SP is ridiculous. Snow Leopard is cheap, and has just as many new features and improvements. Windows 7 does not have a major UI change aside from the new taskbar/dock, and Snow Leopard has a new dock too, so nyeh. One price for upgrading Leopard vs. tiered system to squeeze more money out of people that already paid good money for the fully featured OS. That's what it comes down to.
  • MF350z
What does this have to do with the topic?
  • Jason Asylum
@Jason Asylum: DL speed has slowed to a crawl, everyone must be getting it now.

  • Jason Asylum
It's 1.31gb, so I'm assuming it has to have some fairly significant changes. Whether it be under the hood or in your face, we'll find out. My DL speeds are clocking in at roughly 500kb/sec, we'll know in about a half hour or so. :)

@mGARANDEUR1: Actually outside of Win7 being a version of vista that isn't shit... Well, I just don't find the thought of paying for a working version of Vista with a few upgrades tossed in to be stepping up their game quite honestly.

And for those who will boo me for dogging on Vista for sucking, if it didn't suck why did so many Corp environments (and groups within Microsoft itself) resist upgrading to it? Not to mention they spent $300,000,000 (That's a lot of zeros!) to convince people it didn't suck w/ Project Mojave.

At least Snow Leopard is only charging you a small upgrade fee. For me to go from Vista Ultimate x64 to Win7 Ultimate I have to pay full upgrade price. So, I can upgrade my mbp and my mini for $60 vs $200+ for an upgrade on one machine from Vista and that doesn't cover the upgrade on my mbp's install of XP.
  • Lite: is on a boat.
I've got a theory! Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes! They got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses. And what's with all the carrots? What do they need such good eyesight for anyway? Bunnies! Bunnies! It must be bunnies! Or maybe iTablets...
  • Alain_Garner
1.3 gb is big compared to the previous update that was less than 700mb so hopefully some improvements to spaces that always gives you a different application than you want when changing spaces with multiple windows open
  • mGARANDEUR1
It's just not as exciting as Windows 7 builds are. Microsoft really stepped up their game.

I want to try it so bad!!! Too bad the voodoo kernel doesn't support virtualization or I would be all over that.

Currently I work for the IT help desk of a major financial institution (think Visigoths). We deploy Vista, XP, and OS X depending on the environment the user will be in. One thing people forget is that the enterprise is a lot different then the home or small business environment, especially when you use as many proprietary programs as we do. Anyone remember the SP 3 Rollout? It took us two months before we even did testing batches, and even still we don't have 60% of the company world wide upgraded because it breaks too many of our apps. Deploying Vista with SP1 also had its ups and downs, and to be honest I much prefer working on the systems with vista, as the XP ones are usually 3-6 years old with 1.7Ghz celerons and 512MB of RAM. As for our apples, the only Intel Macs we have are our XServes and MY personal Unibody Macbook. Everyone else uses Powermac G5s or iBook G4s. We still run 10.4 and even 10.3 because again, leopard breaks our apps. And as you can see I will be the only one who is upgrading to 10.6 but only because it is my personal machine, I still boot 10.4 when I'm at work to support users. Even though we just put out a huge survey, and the general response from most people is that if they could have any OS on their work PC it would be Win7 (for PC users) you have to remember that the enterprise is usually 3 years behind the curve, and that changing the OS for just one group of peoole can have a ripple effect through the entire company. Thus I would expect that we are going to see OS 10.4 and XP SP2 on most enterprise and government computers for a good 3 more years.
  • Crenshaw13
@AlexLand: Then there's the shocking (SHOCKING!) truth that WinXP is more than adequate for 99.99% of everything that happens on the enterprise level.

@darkstar: I am using this build with VMware Fusion with Ubuntu 9.04, Fedora Core 11, and Windows 7 RC. I love being able to directly compare OSes on one machine. I just have to virtualize the other way. :)
  • Seiven
noticed this pop up last night around 6 or 7 central ...still not sure what all was in it, but a 1.31GB update HAS to have something good in it
