Also, with the previous version, you could close the last remaining tab and get a new one - nice if you don't want the next website to know which website was open before. If I try it with 3.5, the whole window is closed.

So far I'm not very happy with the new version. For example, with the earlier versions, I could create a shortcut to a website simply by draging the tab to the desktop. If I try that with 3.5, nothing happens.

@Zac Shipley: Same here (F'n IE6). I have been able to get Chrome on here but there are so many blocks, that was dumb luck. I only use it on occasion.

@i wish i had a cafe racer: What about the alternatives to the alternative, such as Chrome or Safari? Both are considerably faster than Firefox or IE8, though not as feature rich as Firefox.

I've done some testing of my own today, now that y'all have got me thinking about this silly browser wars thing, and I got the same results that have been posted all over the place:

Acid3 test results:
Firefox: 97/100
Chrome: 100/100
Safari: 100/100
IE8: 20/100

IE is general fail when it comes to web compatibility.

@facepuncher: I also have that problem. I've seen it go over 1 GB in a matter of hours when I'm using a ton of tabs. I've seen suggestions that Ad Block Plus, Flash Block, or No Scripts causes this problem, but it also seems to exist on vanilla installs of Firefox on other machines too. I wish this problem would be fixed.

So now FF has geolocation support, but its slower than gears and has less applications that work with it. Also, gears is no longer compatible. There goes my slightly better than Text Edit offline word processing until this is fixed.

@Andre Ondre: pfft. i beg to differ kind sir. IE8 is pretty fucking awesome compared to the IEs of the past. and way less of a resource hog than atleast FF3.0 altho i do enjoy firefox. i'll have to give 3.5 a shot. but if it starts hoggin up mah resources imma have to give it teh b00t.

disclaimer: i'm using win7 so IE8 might just be more optimized for it than FF3.0 i dont know. and the aero peek feature that win7 has with IE8 being able to peek each individual tab is a HUGE selling point for me, if FF3.5 can grab that i'd be pumped.

Firefox 3, crashes on me constantly. As has every Firefox update since Firefox 3, so far. And for some strange reason, Firefox 3 on my computer, absolutely hates YouTube and Twitter.

I swear were it not for the extensions, I would have dumped Firefox 3 for Chrome or Opera a long time ago. Never, ever have any trouble out of either of those browsers - ever. Normally with the old Firefox and Firefox 2, if you had too many extensions, it would crash your browser. Not so with Firefox 3. I've tried running it with ZERO extensions, and it still crashes like the Exxon Valdez. I think it is a bad day for a browser, when even IE runs more stable. And I don't even like IE. Yet, on my computers, it actually runs more stable than Firefox 3 - and trust me, that is bumbing me out.

The few extensions that I do use, have become critical for work, which is the only reason I stick with Firefox 3. But I swear, if I could get the exact same functionality as these extensions from Opera or Chrome, I'd dump Firefox 3 and never look back.

Hopefully, they've fixed these issues with Firefox 3.5. I guess I will know within the hour.

had to load up ie8 just to access hootSuite...

Anyone else experiencing a very slow cold start? I only have like 8 add ons yet it acts like it has 20 when it boots up.

@UnderLoK: SafariBlock is the only feature I really need, equivalent to AdBlock Plus in Firefox. Also, do we have benchmarks for 3.5 yet? Or are you just pulling that number out of your ass?

It even cannot autohide bookmarks panel. IE8 is way better.

Only IE8 and Safari4 with Microsoft ClearType rendering are ok for me.

@kstagg: I agree that Firefox is something of a resource hog. But IE is just terrible and unjustifiable as a default web browser. It fails a good number of web standards and is nowhere near as fast as other browsers.

Firefox is not significantly faster than IE, at least not in my experience. I use Safari 4 on my Mac and Chrome in Windows. Either of those are significantly faster than IE. I like Safari a bit better because I can have SafariBlock while Chrome can be lacking in features. But both are very fast, meet more web standards, and are great alternatives to IE and Firefox.

@facepuncher: The longer it stays open the worse it gets. Right now I'm pushing 800mb, but I have an assload of tabs open and I think this session has been going for a couple weeks now (I only hibernate my laptop).

There was a setting in 3.0.x to help clear out the cache, but last I read it was supposed to be toggled on by default in 3.5 (not sure if that made it in or not). Basically your best bet is to restart the browser once in awhile.

In my experience the #1 offending page that sends my memory usage through the roof is gmail w/ redesign. This laptop has a ton of ram so I don't really care, but it's still annoying.

@OGHowie: No, but that does sound like a flash problem... Try uninstall/reinstalling the latest version of flash.

@KhaiJB: Thats the developers fault for not updating a single line of code in time, you can just type about:config in the addressbar, find Extensions.checkcompatibility and disable it. no need for Nightly Tester Tools.

@kstagg: BECAUSE IT WAS A BETA, do you not know what a beta means? Besides thats just his experience, it was a bit crashy for me with the first betas but the later ones and the release candidates were rock solid. Also, the one thing Firefox has that IE doesn't is the addons. AdBlockPlus, Greasemonkey and Stylish means you can change web pages to look how you want them to and add features to them like pirate bay listings on imdb or simply a cosmetic makeover, Xmarks keeps your passwords and bookmarks in sync over multiple installations, Firebug to help with web development. There are hundreds of useful ones.

@LessthanZach: If you tried & installed RC3, than no you're not wrong as they pushed RC3 as final (Firefox v3.5.0.0, Gecko v1.9.1.3462), so everybody is getting the version released a few days ago. And 3.5.30729 is the version of the .NET Framework installed on your system, not the version of Firefox ;)

Worst thing about Firefox is their freaking bookmarks, takes an hour to bookmark a website...ugh This is why I continue to use Opera.

I am confused. I have had this exact version of Firefox for about a week now. I didn't use any Torrents or anything, I just checked for updates about a week ago and was updated to Firefox 3.5.30729. When I saw this article, I thought that it would be updated further, autoupdate didn't work so I downloaded, installed and to my surprise the version is the same, all my add-ons still work and NOTHING is different. Could I be wrong some how?

@Andre Ondre: Admittedly, I do use Firefox for HTML standards when designing sites outside out of work (we use IE exclusively here at corporate). But I do not use .png when designing sites and are probably a lot more vanilla than some of the elaborate designs out there so haven't run into any probs using IE.

But for just web browsing - I use IE.

@Geisrud: That's not actually a leak. Firefox 3 just takes forever to close. If you monitor it after closing the window, it gradually decreases its size until it finally closes. On my systems, it often takes up to five minutes to close fully. It's definitely not behavior that should be there, but I don't really think it's a leak.

Good timing on 3.5 - I downloaded Chrome last week and my use has increased since it was so much faster and lighter than 3.0, but very barebones. As long as SU & ABP work I'm good to go.

@triggerx: I know it works in Chrome and IE 7/8 for me. Firefox does not on both my home and work computers. When I click reply all it does is jump to the top of the page and add a # to the URL. It also seems to lack Hybrid, Profile, and Logout/in on the top bar.

i had 4 tabs open (email, youtube[not playing a vid], google, wikipedia) and it was over 700MB of ram consumption. Probably a one-time glitch, but it's always eating s ton of resources. There's probably nothing they could do, or they would have i guess

@Geisrud: I hope so. It's an easy thing to solve (bring up task manager and kill the process) but it is entirely ridiculous to have to go through that to close some software.

I wonder if it fixes the memory leak, where Windows will say FF is still open after you close it, preventing you from starting a new session.
