External IPhone Mic Supposedly Gets 10x Better Audio ‘Reception’

Brando’s claiming 10x better audio reception on this external, swivelable iPhone microphone. Even if it doesn’t get 10x better reception, it should get 2x better reception, which is worth $US14 for most people. [Brando via Dvice]

How else would you get that hearing aid app to work?

  • JeffPom

@darknecross: except that - when you put that in the headphone jack.... where you gonna put the headphones?

You'll be speakerphoning all the time. Which is, I suppose, better than nothing.

@Iron Man Underoos: they corrected it

  • UliKunkel

This might be good with the four track apps.
Is there a way to connect an strument directly to the phone for such apps? How did that line6 demo connect the guitar to the phone?
    Anybody?

  • Iron Man Underoos

Yes, according to the bottom of the Brando product page, the following are supported (but the iPod Touch 1G doesn't accept mic's, so that's an error on the Brando page).

    Compatible Models :
    - iPhone 3G S
    - iPhone 3G
    - iPhone 2G
    - iPod Nano 4G
    - iPod Touch <---- must be an error
    - iPod Touch 2G

@pantsonfireliarliar: If you used it in conjunction with 4-Track or equiv, I bet you could get usable audio.

@zjgz: Why would you ever wonder what the inside of my ear sounds like?

  • Daniel Rosenthal

does anyone know if this would work on the ipod touch? cause if it does, that could open up a whole lot of apps for it...

    Daniel Rosenthal

  • Die Fledermaus

They say it works with the original iPod Touch as well as the 2G version, they also have one that is not for the original touch. Well I guess I will be spending 14$ to find out if it works as advertised. Hey Gizmodo guys would be glad to do a review for you.

  • makk

with the vibrate function i can see ppl get carried away..

@92BuickLeSabre: Haven't you ever wondered what the inside of your ear sounds like?
    I have.

  • tehdorkz

Could be useful I suppose. A lot of people complain that they can't hear me on the phone when I talk because I talk really quietly. Might have to check this thing out.

  • daath

@frigg: Tells you a bit about the quality of the built in one though, eh?

@Weegee: thats exactly what I though of when i saw it too. And I haven't even seen a full Star Wars movie.

  • Charles Ip

@Duckspwn: That would be useful as well.

  • frigg

It's a good idea, but $14 sounds like it's too cheap to be good. $14 doesn't buy a lot of microphone.

  • Weegee

@madog: Are there any support groups? Nerd Anonymous?

  • Scopitone

@Weegee: Looks more like a screaming Lego Uruk-Hai head.

    "URUK-HAI, GUYS!"

  • DonLuc

This is the buttplug attachment for the vibrator app.

  • darknecross

It shows that it's compatible with the iPod Touch. Combined with Google Voice and spending most of my time around WiFi hotspots, this could be amazing.

    darknecross

  • Duckspwn

@Duckspwn: Crap, never mind, it is. I misread it and thought it gave 10x better signal reception. Fail on my part.

  • Duckspwn

@IcemanD: Except in this case, it isn't useless...

  • robinandtami

It would be great for identifying music with Shazam too, although I am surprised at how sensitive the mic can be for that. It even worked for me one night when I was eating dinner at The Outback. My table was right next to the bar and I just knew there was no way it would be able to identify the song with all the ambient noise around, but it did; and I was able to tell my girlfriend "Yes Dear... that IS Melissa Etheridge."

    The marvels of technology.

  • pantsonfireliarliar

How about adjustable gain controls so recording a concert produces usable audio.

  • seapathac

@LessthanZach: There's gotta be a great Dr. Zoidberg quote that could come after that...nah can't think of any.

  • madog

They should just make that into a spring loaded projectile. Already looks like something from an old Megatron toy. You know, before parents these days became pussies whenever their slow children hurt themselves with the good old toys like portable nuclear labs and things that shot hard missles at mach 1 speeds.

  • GodfreyOriole

Actually this is very usefull for video recording on the iphone. I was recording my fiances father playing an electric acoustic and because of the bad mic it was all muddled together . This would help in those situations.

    @Weegee: It's cause you're a nerd.

It's OK though, you're amongst fellow nerds here at the nerdery.

  • someguynamedjay

I find it odd that it comes out of the top of the phone. Anyone else? How can this pick up my voice unless I am using the phone in speaker mode? Or is this just for the recording app?

    someguynamedjay

  • LessthanZach

I am going to guess that this is only useful when using the speakerphone, being that your vocal chords aren't located above your ears.

  • sfokevin

And increases the chance that you Fandango up your earphone port by a factor of 100x

  • 92BuickLeSabre

Why would I want to stick a microphone in my ear?

  • ironman1266

when are they gonna come out with a boom mic to go with my shoulder stabilizer for my oh-so-important filming methods using the iPhone?

  • IcemanD

Sweet, more useless shit I can carry around for my iPhone.

    IcemanD

  • sfokevin

    @MarkusX: It's not just you...

    sfokevin

  • MarkusX

Is it just me or isn't that very ugly on the iPhone?

  • Weegee

It reminds me of Darth Vaders helmet for some reason.
