3mm-Thin Digital Booth Babe Gives Other Booth Babes Inferiority Complexes

This super-thin booth babe display was recently spotted on the floor of the high-octane International Stationary and Office Supply Fair (slogan: “You’ll get punched in the face with excitement!”).

this eye-catching digital signage system consists of a 0.3-millimeter-thick high-luminance rear-projection film (Vikuiti Rear Projection Film developed by 3M) applied to a 3-millimeter-thick glass substrate cut into the shape of a woman. A rear projector beams video onto the film, whose microbead-arrayed surface produces a crisp, brilliant image viewable from any angle, even in brightly lit environments.

That’s all well and good, but can she pretend to not be skeeved out by chubby, sweaty dudes who want their pictures taken with her? That’s the sign of a real booth babe. [Robot Watch via Pink Tentacle]

Let's hope they don't bring a slightly bewildered Ben Aflek out from behind the stand! :P

    @grahamhgreen: And a projector (in the b/g)

My guess is Smart Film - http://www.smart-film.com.tw/

Very cool idea for the design, but being rear projected, it creates a lot of unneeded empty space behind it. When they get to the point where the video is channeled from the base up into the substrate to create a fully moving image at the same thickness, now that will be awesome.
  • jollyrogerjonesy
I think they're missing the point of holographs. They're posed to have volume.
  • tehdahl
    @wakebodr: that's exactly what he's talking about...
  • tehdahl
now we just need a business man display capable of checking out this babe from behind.
  • The Nacon
I'm still having hard time believing that buying a Projector and "Vikuiti Rear Projection Film" would be cheaper than actually hiring a living person, whom can answer some questions about the booth it holds.

Nobody in the convention center moved, or did you mean "stationery"?

@Sol-Corp: Down by the River? I might be there too! Yeah for McFly

@32ndnote: im seeing the same. But is anyone else having problems with the home page. I can only see more than the first 3 articles is i use condensed view.
  • Sol-Corp
@Alduron: Maybe not in the midwest and south but here in Philly we are very accepting

  • TurboTexas
Why is it that all the youtube videos on giz keep saying "invalid parameters."?

  • Alduron
If you look at the back side...do you see her butt?

@Sol-Corp: Glass fetishes won't be publicly accepted until 2012.

Oddly enough, the booth schwag was Windex and paper towels...

@Sol-Corp: But you can't get away..unless you got powah!

  • 32ndnote
@Lance eagles3strong: That's what happens when you elicit William Friedkin to direct your booth babe...
  • gerrylum
@Kaiser-Machead: Yeah, I think if they could develop a substrate that was near 99% translucent unless a projector was projecting an image on it, that would be the way to go. That way, they could just have a pane of glass that would be totally clear save for the area that had an image projected on it.

@wakebodr:I actually have the same setup going at work. It looks like the letter-spacing is at like 1px for the right column and -2px for the main body. In addition to the distorted images. | In LH, the images look normal, but the letters are still spaced.

Is there any chance it could become standard practice to include a link to these videos? They don't show up on my Pre (and I'm guessing the same is true for the iPhone) and won't until it gets flash support, but a link under the video would launch the youtube app and allow me to see the video. (I'm just assuming this is a youtube video, but I can't see it and I'd really like to see this tech in action.
Disclaimer: I'm not posting this from my Pre, I'm posting it from work--which blocks videos via a firewall. I'd like to be able to switch over to my Pre to see the stuff the firewall blocks.

Ok, this is weird, nice update, but will it blend! Flame ON!
  • tsdexter
@wakebodr: same specs.. same view.. distortion and all...

  • wakebodr
@32ndnote: My page looks fine. I have a 1280x1024 resolution screen and firefox is maximized so it fills the page. The only thing that I see is the pictures on the "More About" section are distorted. Other than that, the text and everything fits fine.

    wakebodr

  • Kaiser-Machead
@Lance eagles3strong: Maybe they should've tried their hand at projecting the image onto a big glass monolith, rather than a specific cutout shape. I know they were going for the hologram look, but I don't think the effect is quite as good as intended.

    Kaiser-Machead

  • kagekiri
@Lance eagles3strong: Yeah, I was wondering what was weirding me out, and it's definitely the fact her hair/head didn't shift at all despite her face/jaw moving around in the display. Creepy.

    kagekiri

  • Sol-Corp
@Kaiser-Machead: Thats why you bring a McFly hoverboard so you can book it out of there as soon as Biff shows up after you touch his girl...sorry im watching back to the future tonight so im overflowing with allusions

    Sol-Corp

  • BeerManMike
@32ndnote: Nope, but i get operation aborted 99% of the time and have to spam "stop" at the right time to get the page to load and sometimes i can't make a comment for a couple mins while something? is loading.

    BeerManMike

  • Kaiser-Machead
@Sol-Corp: I'm pretty sure these trade shows have some brand of goon squad that pummels people who get grabby with the booth gals. Maybe I'm wrong.

    Kaiser-Machead

  • zeroprime
@32ndnote: It doesn't seem to keep the proper aspect ratio. Perhaps they could have it auto crop when doing the resizing. Although it's arguably getting a little too busy on the page by including the pictures at all.

    zeroprime

  • wakebodr
@artistpavel: If she moved out of the cutout, body parts would disappear.

    wakebodr

  • jibbly
    @32ndnote: Same here.
  • Sol-Corp
But there is nothing to grab... unless you have a glass fetish...which is totally cool after all it is 2009 right?

  • Purple Monkey Dishwasher
@32ndnote: Yep me too, make sure you let the editors know so they can fix that

@32ndnote: New comment system is out for only a few hours and I'm already screwing up. Hooray! Double Posting!

  • artistpavel
Interesting how they made her not move outside the cutout shape, only a hand and face features move a bit.
  • 32ndnote
Is anyone else's page layout really messed up with the bonus "More About Booth Babes" section stretched out on the right side? | Either way, I'd still take size 4 over 3mm any day.
  • BeerManMike
I was always told asian women were flat...

    BeerManMike

  • Lance eagles3strong
Am I the only one freaked out by the fact that she only moves within such a small area.

I know that she is meant to only take up X amount of space but her lack of realistic movement in the head and torso area, is disturbing.

I'm talking head rotating 360º disturbing.
  • elitesoulman
Punched in the FACE? Damn. Pretty cool though. We should replace all grocery store clerks with this as well, so they don't stare at all the junkfood I bought.
