I have a problem. A serious one. Whenever I go travelling – whether for work or pleasure – I carry way too many gadgets with me. And this trip to Computex is no different. In my luggage right now, I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro, my iPhone, my wireless Internet key, my IXUS compact camera, my 40D DSLR with a couple of lenses and a spare battery, my PSP, my DS Lite, a pair of portable Logitech travel speakers, a pair of Sennheiser PXC-450 noise cancelling headphones, my Sony voice recorder, a 3GJuice portable iPhone battery, and a Powertraveller portable charger. And then there are the chargers for everything above. The bottom line is that my bag weighs a tad more than it probably should.
But the question here is what gadgets do you have to take travelling with you? What can’t you live without? Because at this point, any suggestions are welcome…

I’d ditch your PSP, DS Lite and the portable speakers. Instead take a good book. Something Robert Harris for a long trip.

Wow that’s prob too many, lol. I generally take my Sony HD HDD camcorder (all connectivity cables, camera charger, external charger, extra HC battery), Canon SLR 5D Mk1 (extra lens, charger of course, extra cards, extra battery), MBP 15″ (extra battery), iPhone (charger, Richard Solo back-up battery and its charger), N95 (2nd phone with its charger), 3.5G usb card (telstra), Sony earbud noise canceling headphones (forget model), sony MDR-850? Hi-fi headphones, iPod touch 16GB .
Actually i’m starting to look as bad or worse, and yes my bag and all the extra bags always weigh a ton and take forever to pack/unpack.

damn man, there would be companies taking less tech to computex than you!
in a perfect world the iPhone and cameras should be all you need (and some Sennheisers!). but that would mean that the iPhone would have to have really good games, be awesome to type stuff up on, not have ridiculous charges for accessing the net internationally, and it would need an app that let you use it as a voice recorder. i’m not sure which of the above points its missing, but i really wish it was like that.

1x macbook, 1x wd external usb hd, 1x iphone, 1x blanket (all in the notebook bag) – the blanket being the most essential one – i wish the bag would fit a sleeping bag though.

The PSP and the DS is a bit too much! stick with the iphone for video and games, plus look forward to iphone 3.0 with data tethering so you can leave your USB modem at home (pity about roaming charges).
On the earphone front, I found noise cancelling headphones too much, so now I just travel with my Sony in ear (proper in ear) headphones and an airline adaptor, they block out most noise, sound great and are tiny to travel with.
While your in Taiwan, consider taking the bullet train to Kaohsiung, its a great way to travel, and you get to see the country side, even if you just come straight back once you arrive at the end :) Also enjoy the night markets, market food, Taipei 101 tower and endless ASUS laptop shops, Taiwain is great!

I leave as many chargers as possible at home by charging via USB (PSP, when I carry it), HTC mobile (doubles as NextG modem).
Report PermalinkLaptop is a Dell Mini-9 (with a 32GB SSD u/g), and it’s power pack is neat – more like a mobile phone charger.
The DSLR makes life tough when I take it, but usually worth the effort.
