Snow Leopard Vs Windows 7: FIGHT!

12:40AM June 13, 2009 | Jesus Diaz

The cat is out of the bag—literally. You saw Matt’s Snow Leopard vs Windows 7, and it’s Friday, so I think it’s time for part deux of our classic flamefest.

To get things rolling, let me start: Fuck Windows 7, a Vista on a diet which is really just the same stuff as before without all the clutter. Like Matt said, it is a glorified service pack at full retail price. Mac OS X Snow Leopard, despite Matt describing it as another glorified Service Pack, is not a service pack—even while it’s surprising and inexpensively priced as a service pack.

The fact is that, while it doesn’t include new eye candy, the new version of the Mac OS X operating system implements a full re-factoring of some of its core technologies (in software engineering, re-factoring means rewriting the code underneath but not changing the user interface.) Full 64-bit overhaul, completely new QuickTime system—which flies—a new Cocoa Finder—which flies too—and stuff like OpenCL and Grand Central dispatch, to name a few of the gigantic architectural changes. These changes are going to deeply affect—for the best—the performance of both the operating system and future applications, specially GCD and OpenCL. And all for $US29? I think we have a clear winner here, even while the user won’t see new pretty icons. They just will see stuff moving faster than ever before.

So the way I see it is this: Apple got into a solid, fast, lean machine and retrofitted the engine to put it in overdrive. Microsoft, on the other side, just made the mess of Windows Vista actually usable with Windows 7. It will be a speed boost, yes, but only because the previous operating system was crap. So OS X wins again this round. Deal with that, Windows fanboys. [Image by Nep Smith via Cult of Mac]

Just another Mac lover. Sure, Microsoft did make a huge mess of Vista when released, but it has worked very hard to improve it ever since. Now Windows 7 just improves it even more. I for one don’t use Macs, however, it doesn’t mean I go around abusing the other users etc. The past is the past. We all make mistakes and we learn from them. Look at Intel, for example, their Netburst architecture wasn’t the best, but now look at their current architectures, even Apple uses them now.

Lets just say it’s a win for both sides. They both are improvements from the previous builds, so who cares? Just use what you want to use. And grow up…

did anyone else notice that the things listed that Snow Leopard is doing are the things that were done in vista?

I just upgraded to a MacBook Pro and having coming from a PowerBook from 3 years ago, i felt that the finder and stuff wasnt THAT much faster on the intel side, dispite it being dual core. Snow Leopard is going to make that machine fly. And thats an improvement over 7 than vista because i swear my powerbook felt faster than xp, and now 7 is almost on par with xp.

Only one thing worse than a pc user and that’s a fence sitting pc user. Naito, grow some balls, stand proudly by your operating system or go back to using paper. This post isn’t about peace. love and mung beans, it’s about stabbing the guy next to you just because he is wearing a different colour

“Snow Leopard Vs Windows 7: FIGHT!”
    By Jesus Diaz.

What a joke of a article! People come to gadget sights to get insight and info on upcoming and released products to make a informed decision upon purchasing said item.

This wanker of a “journalist” is just spouting nonsense and a complete Apple nut. I have both in my house hold and I will be upgrading to both new 7 & OSX. I believe the Moderators or website editors should really look who they hire for writing there pieces.

Last thing I did like was how scientific this comparison was I mean did you see those flow charts and the compiled data spread sheets!!!

    Oh….neither did I….

It just saddens me that a site I usually respect would actually post such cr@p as an article. Ars Technica has a real article up that’s actually worth the time of day.

Wow! I think this is the first article on a tech site to actually give it to Snow Leopard as opposed to “RAWR WIN7 FTW!” this is exactly what I think as well, Snow leopard is going to be lean and fast. I have only recently been getting interested in coding and the ins and outs of software and as such I’m totally cool with paying for ‘re-factored’ software.

I agree with most here, this article is a bust.

Win7 is, albeit, new but it still stable and compatible. I for one still use good ol’ WinXP. I used to hate Mac for no reason until I found out how good they really were, but they still would be no good for what I do. Mac isn’t really your mainstream computer, It’s good for architechs, musicians/bands and so on with all of it’s packed applications. WinXP is easier to use though and although there are plenty of viruses and cr@p that you can get off the net… This is not an objective article, different people will use different OSes for different reasons.
