Neurosky Brain Gaming Headset Now Has Free SDK
Remember the Neurosky mind-gaming headset we tried earlier this year? The one that actually worked? It’s getting a free SDK.
This means both developers at large studios as well as dudes in their basement can make programs and games that do things with the data generated by the headset. And you generate data just by thinking a certain way.
What kind of stuff can these developers do? Well, for larger companies they can make this an additional controller to supplement their normal games, such as reloading just by concentrating or lifting boxes and “setting crap on fire.” Independent developers can make weird one-off games that can really stretch the limits of what the Neurosky Mindset can read from your brain. Or porn games. [Neurosky]

Houndstooth check? That is so 2008.
@TheCrudMan:
Actually, you would need to concentrate on reloading for it to work.. rather than just think about it. I used the prototype version of the nerosky headset when it looked like an 80s headset with some junk glued to it.
If you have to concetrate on breathing.....

@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: the brain waves are the same.
i need one!!!!!!! please people make games/applications for it though!

I read that as if it were a russian last name. As in Neroski...comrade.
@zeroprime: pew pew pew mind bullets

@TheCrudMan: too funny man, thanks

@CircuitMage: And how, pray tell, would this be of any use to Skynet?
Cite your references.
Stupid Wesley Crusher and Stupid Commander Data with his stupid strobelight and fine-ass Ashley Judd and stupid STUPID Riker...

As one who's already playing with binaural beats and psychoacoustics (www.JetCityOrange.com/meditation/binaural-beats.html) I can't wait! This picks up where Journey to Wild Divine left off (or never got to).
Wire me up Scotty!
Woohoo! Porn Games! ...are those like reindeer games?

@lecti: Microphone. Mic.
Mike is in the wrong position.
@FriarNurgle: this is supposed to supplement buttons, not replace them... like a third hand with perfect reaction times or something.
A GAME THAT SMELLS FEAR!

@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: depends on the brain-computer interface (BCI). There are direct-connect BCI's that physically touch the brain, there are minimally-invasive BCIs, and there are non-invasive BCIs like this headset.
The direct-connect BCIs seem to be the most powerful, as they can measure the most outputs, whereas the non-invasives like this headset can really - for the most part - only measure overall brain activity.
Wikipedia that sh*t.

Maybe some1 will be able to get it to type from our thoughts. What would be amazing would be pictures drawn from our minds, that would be amazing
if you go to their website, you can see that they measure your attention level, meditation level, 8 different bands of brainwaves, as well as one single raw brainwave signal that also picks up muscle movements and ambient noise. So that's 10 different inputs by my count. It will be interesting to see how programmers can relate "brain relaxation" to various in game activities, and if it seems intuitive or just plain weird. Awesome in any case ;)

One more tool for Skynet....the end is near.
@FriarNurgle: This is a gadget website, and this is new technology. If you are incapable of appreciating the advancement of technology, what the hell are you doing here?
Now a product like this, if it was full of precision, would have me much more intrigued than such a product as Natal. The ability to lazify my body even more by taking away the need to even move my fingers or any other body part! Oh the possibilities! Combine this with a VR HMD and I'm sold.

Finally, a controller for... Mentok the Mind Taker! boooWEEEEEEooop

@tande04: They may work the same, but an external device is not going to be able to discern between distinct actions. I was asking how far the technology likely has come. I'm guessing they can measure the general area the signal is coming from but they can't pinpoint what action you are thinking about unless the electrical activity for that action is in much different area of the brain.

What? Buttons are too hard now? I understand the brain wave controlled wheelchair... but this is ridiculous. Aren't the poor *insert video game of choice* players fat enough? Does it come with a feeding tube and colostomy bag?
@aerospaceman: She's thinking about the Hammer.
@tande04: And as soon as we figure out how each part does what it does we'll be on to something.
@zeroprime: There's a course for you at Sam Houston Institute of Technology!
I just picture someone mistaking the sensor for a microphone, and breaking it off trying to lower it.
@Kaiser-Machead: Seriously? I just want to burn stuff with my mind and maybe blow up aliens with psy-beams.
zeroprime
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: Not really. All brains work the same.
I'm no brain doctor so I don't know what this is really picking up on but its going to be the same across the board. There may be slight imbalances here and there but _____ part of the brain is still going to control _____.
tande04
@aerospaceman:
and it's not you...
@Kaiser-Machead: Seriously that would make a goood game.
Auctioneer Hero would be a great game for this.
Kaiser-Machead
the girl in the image is thinking about something big...
I'm wondering how far they can go with this. I would assume brainwaves are pretty unique per person so the code would almost have to be specific to a person.
Purple Monkey Dishwasher
how many different actions can this pick up?
if it works just like an on/off button, it's useless....
Reloading just by thinking about it? But that would make me think about reloading all the time...and now I lost the game, and now I just realized that I have autonomic control of my breathing and it is now stuck on manual, and you just did too. Fuck!
