Researchers have developed a lightweight, mostly transparent, and quite flexible memory chip. It sounds cool, but then I think: What possible advantages could flexible memory have? Help me out, commenters.
The chip (see it in action here), of unspecified capacity, actually uses transparencies like your grampa used to use with his overhead projectors. This clear plastic is flexible, unlike silicon chips. We’ve been seeing flexible components lately, most notably displays, but memory is tiny and has to be inside the gadget anyway. I’ve been thinking for at least a minute and a half and I can’t figure out a circumstance in which flexible memory would be preferable, besides maybe a gadget that isn’t so much folded as rolled like a poster. So give me a hand: What’s the point of all this? [Wired] d

Maybe For Digital Posters OR More Flexible Digital photo frames Though you would have to combine the Flexible Screens with the flexible Memory.

WELL…
after watching that video, they’ve built a bit of plasitc that will hold 4 bits of information.
… wonder what the 16gb flexible itouch will look like …
Obviously this is experimently R&D Stage, and a great idea, i guess the only downside is maybe, @ mass production, a posible lack of titanium?
i can’t think of anything specifically, but yeah, the obvious point to this is ePaper, (babylon AD), this idea would lead into building flexible Logic gates and processors.

well, they could rol it for a start resulting in memory that could finaly fit into a circular shappe without the excess space that is often left.
imagine the flexible iPod shuffle.

maybe, an electronic newspaper that lives up to its original design using flexible screens. However, the flexible memory chip could be used to hold archives of newspapers over the years? or maybe an entire operating system that could help you download new content?
or maybe it could be used in military electronics (i.e. helmets) that could network soldiers to eachother inside their helmets. bf2142 much? along with current concept emp grenades, we will be in the future in no time!

@ Nate
how about a line of clothing that has libraries of different designs built in? with some sort of online store? that requires you to plug in the clothes to the computer to download? like an ipod?

imagine an eepc that you could fold up and put in your pocket.

stick it to the back of a flexible screen, and you’re well on the way to a PDA as seen in ‘earth – final conflict’
