Lenovo Installs Adware With Latest Automatic Update
A recent automatic update from Lenovo contains adware that subjects users to irremovable pop-up ads that advertise various accessories contained in the Lenovo website.
The ads pop up about once an hour, seemingly without regard to what other programs may be running, which sucks if you’re in the middle of a presentation. Users have so far been unable to find a way to completely disable the various messages (the check box with “do not show this message again” doesn’t always work). While the ThinkPad line has continued to be well engineered from a hardware standpoint, the packaged Thinkvantage software has gotten progressively worse with each new version. Utilities that were once useful, such as the back-up tool, have become bloated and dysfunctional. Hopefully Lenovo will take heed of customer complaints and discontinue the ads with the next update. Poor form!
Yeah, very poor. I actually got 2 new Lenovos this week for friends and family (end of financial year specials) and also have a lenovo for work and home – love the hardware (looks are average, but robust functional and reliable). But the 2 new ones both have Vista (Windows 7 can’t come soon enough) and about 30 Lenovo installed programs which need to be removed 1 by 1 – restore managers, backup managers, system health checkers, system updates, virus scan demos, office demos, introduction videos, it goes on and on. I know they aren’t the only vendor who does this, but how about packaging demos uninstalled to save those who dont want them the trouble of cleaning up the system! It should be ready to go within 5 mins of powering on, not after 4 hours of clean up!
We have a Lenovo at work and after a few weeks, diagnosed a rebooting/safe mode problem as needing a new motherboard. They were really quick to send one out with great service, and now they go and blow all that good will with this update. I don’t understand how this can come from the same company?
