IPhone 3.0 Upgrade Process Rendering Phones Unactivated

We just got a load of tips from readers that the iPhone 3.0 update is sending their iPhone 3Gs into an unrecoverable mode where the activation process won’t complete.

The message above is the one iTunes spits out if you’re one of the unlucky ones—like our own Andi—that can’t complete the upgrade. The phone itself is locked and can only make emergency calls, which is what happens when you can’t authenticate your phone with iTunes.

It seems like it’s just the activation server is acting up, which means you should just hold on until it comes back online. [Thanks tipsters! (You poor bastards.)]

Yep, its still happening and iTunes is telling me my update to 3.0 has been successful too…all except the authentication. Marvellous.

    Hiya, quick question

Does this only happen on iPhone 3GS? Or
    also on last gen iPhone?

I wanted to update but I am holding off until
I know for certain it is going to work.

I had this problem with my torrented version…it kept making me restore my ipod halfway through 3.0 installing. Turns out all I had to do was update itunes beforehand.

Mine crashed out this morning, error code #13 rendering phone useless.

Had to do a restore on another PC to get back to factory, then re-applied the update, all working fine now

I found that I needed to swap SIM cards to another working Optus SIM before it would do the restore.

After the restore, I put my normal SIM back in and it activated just fine.
