Doom Resurrection For IPhone Hits App Store, Costs $10

Doom Resurrection, the first properly new title in the Doom franchise since Doom III, has finally landed in the App Store, and it’s not cheap. But is it sufficiently Doom-y? Dark? Graphically lush? Good?

As the first trailer seemed to promise, yes, this is a very impressive game. Graphics and sound are top-notch and the production as a whole befits its price. The main issue with Resurrection is the control scheme: even though other iPhone FPSes have pulled of decent free-movement control systems—including id’s own Wolfenstein port—this game is, strictly speaking, on rails.

To be honest, this can be frustrating, especially given how well the environments are rendered. I mean, they’re right there, in full, detailed 3D, and you can’t explore them. The gameplay’s saving grace is accelerometer support, which at least lets you aim and shake off zombies in an intuitive way.

As for the claims that this is a totally new installment in the Doom franchise, they’re technically true: the story is fresh, and so are the levels. But aside from the new story meat and new gameplay dynamics, Resurrection borrows liberally from Doom III, looking, sounding and, to an extend, feeling like its 2004 predecessor. Impressive? Sure. Worth $US10? If so, then barely. [via Will Smith's Twitter]

I'm curious as to the age or financial status of users that say $10 is too expensive for playing a game. I grew up in a time where people just used to pump dozens of quarters into arcade games and have nothing to show for it except maybe a high score for a while.

You go to a movie get a bite to eat and $10 is gone in less than two hours for a movie you may not even enjoy. Yet this complaint that these throwaway little games are too expensive on an iPhone/iPod Touch yet they cost more on other platforms, is very unnerving. I suppose every game should be $0.99 or it's considered overpriced. Wow! How can a platform last for developers if the price stays that low? I know the $10 price is going to drop by half in a month. People should just wait for the price drop. The developer just puts the price that high for the people that can't wait to be the first to play the game.

I just don't understand the bitching about the prices of these games when PSP and DSi games are much more expensive and yet cater to a younger audience. It's weird.

@World's Greatest Mactard!: Uh oh. I enjoyed a couple games on my iPhone the other day. I apologize.

  • Badmofo

@Fractal the Meek: Yes, amazing isn't it? It has good grpahics btw, for the same reason Umbrella Chronicles on the Wii has good graphics; Rail shooter. And that sold well, and is a good game. This is good as well, it actually feels like Doom.

  • Fractal the Meek

I'm amazed that a market where a $10 video game with reasonable graphics, etc, being considered expensive is sustainable.

@urbanturban666: This is because children will one day have sex and we want to defer that day since they are already equipped to do it. We also expect they will never engage in violence are not equipped to do it, and the fantasy of guns and bombs need not be addressed. It's a fallacy; just look at crime stats.

  • Greg Edwards

@World's Greatest Mactard!: If thinking like that prevailed, we'd never develop better, more affordable, and more portable hardware to run more awe-smackingly-awesome games. You might has well have said, "if you want to play games, go to an arcade."

Considering you couldn't hit the reply button, I'm not really surprised.

The good 3D is probably BECAUSE you can't explore around.... The more limited your movement, the better the graphics can be....

@urbanturban666: Yeah, this has been a problem in this country for a long time. People have been pointing out for years how ridiculous it is that violence is somehow better than sex and swearing, but so far nobody really cares apparently.

@World's Greatest Mactard!: What a simple, structured life you must lead. "You guys carrying umbrellas always make me LOL, if you don't want to get wet, stay indoors!"

What is up with you all-or-nothing guys? How about this: I've gamed on PC, all three consoles, and my iPhone.

I think what I've accepted is that I while don't see the amazing graphics and control of the larger, more powerful devices if I play a game on my phone, I also can't carry a TV and console around with me in my pocket. There are varying degrees of game-playing that are different and totally acceptable.

    @urbanturban666:

That's pretty typical; just take a look at broadcast television in the US. It's ok to show someone's head splitting open for a fraction of a second, but we can't say words like f*ck or show an ounce of nudity. Seems backwards to me as well.

Talk to the conservatives and stupid, lazy parents on this one. For some reason, bad language and nudity are worse than violence, and parents can't look after what their kids are doing.

My only complaint about the game would have been the rail system had I not read this Giz post. Knowing this ahead of time I still bought the game, and it's a lot of fun.

The tilt control scheme, although I usually hate it, works really well. It's not annoying at all. It's also pretty accurate as it's not very loose; when you tilt it slowly moves in that direction, giving you the feeling of having a lot of control over the reticle's placement.

Its pricing is a little steep for an iPhone game, at $9.99, but being from id I at least had confidence in its quality - and it paid off.

  • @heyart

I'm enjoying it so far. Running smooth on a 3G OS 3.0.

    I'll be getting this@urbanturban666:

If the Trite Queen is in this version, we'll be getting boobs AND uber violence. Sweet.

I just feel that a FPS has no business on any mobile platform. I agree with Mactard, if you want to play a game, get a pc, get an xbox, but don't waste one hours work on a game that will just provide a lack-luster experience. Poor graphics & Poor gameplay (when compared to conventional gaming) And a user interface that will be more frustrating then it is worth.
I love FPS, I love Doom... Just not on my Phone

@urbanturban666: Welcome to America! Isn't it the case that usa censor sex more than violence where uk is the other way around?

  • Sacha Cohen

@urbanturban666: The 'uber awesome violence' from the trailer looked a bit crappy to me, I really thought it was spoilt by the blood spatter animation which looked more like puffs of cinnamon.

I don't know if the actual release is more violent than the trailer but the gamer definitely looked more on the cartoon violence level.

  • TailsNZ

@urbanturban666: lol, this doesn't quite fit but it kind of reminds me of that old South Park movie quote... "Horrific, Deplorable violence is okay, as long as people don't say any naughty words!"

  • urbanturban666

so apple wont allow an app that shows some bare breasts... but they are fine with all sorts of uber awesome violence???
