I think there is no good reason for the price difference than M$ beening nothing more than just greedy. I will encourage my friends and family to switch to ubuntu/kubuntu. A quick note to M$ I am from a reasonable size family.

Poor little jonny doesn't want shitty mac hardware. Probably one of those poor souls that has spent years dealing with the complete and total nonsense that is the Windows Operating System. All those years wasted while mac users have had a relatively easy time using their tools. Let's face it if people had known the heartache they faced when they bought their first Windows machine they would never have done it. What do i think about the price of Windows 7 I done't care, I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than contribute one dollar to the overblown bank accounts of the Microsoft Billionaires.
In fact Microsoft should be facing a class action for selling windows as an operating system, press start, shutdown - blue screen - all fall down. Bring on the next Y2K, now that was funny!

The thing I really 'love' about the pricing is that we have three computers! That means buying three copies of the OS! LOL

Nice one M$oft! We won't be getting W7 until they have a more practical multiple licensing scheme in place!

What an absolute joke! With pricing like this atleast you would expect an OS that has had major upgrades - By the way how much do the developers get paid given that the baseline is $299.00AU. Get with the program Microsoft! stop tinkering and develope the bloody OS.

Windows XP runs just fine on 1.2ghz CPU. In fact it runs OK on CPU's half your speed

You need to look at why your system is so slow. Is it the old HDD, lack of RAM, RAM Bandwidth because of intergrated Graphics, or lack of drivers

I have built many machines with early CPUs and they run just fine if setup correctly

Windows 98se is really only needed on early pentium II and less machines.

I am seriously considering to upgrade to Win 7 professional. I have it for a few months and I like it. But at these prices in Australia considering in US the professional upgrade is $199, I will prefer not to buy immediately. No wonder Apple has done the right thing by slashing its prices on mac and mini etc.

I hope Microsoft will cut the prices soon considering the strength of Aussie $.

Why do PC users put up with it? OSX is well ahead of Windows in terms of features and usability and upgrades are cheaper and pain free.

I'd been contemplating installing Windows on my Mac so I could run the odd piece of software written only for WIndows but at that price there's no chance in hell.

Check out a Mac when purchasing your next computer. If you're not convinced buy another PC and keep complaining.

I've know plenty of Windows users switching to Mac and swearing they'll never go back... I'm yet to hear of one Mac owner doing the same with Windows!

I have been running Win 7 RC for a few months now.
What a refief after being assaulted by the under impressive Vista HP which came with the FIRST NEW PC I have ever bought. Couldn't stand it & went back to XP (sigh... - ahh that's better).
I spotted a while back the opportunity to become involved in the "Win 7 Launch Party" and duly filled out the application. I was selected as a host, and as a thank you, Microsoft sent me a "Signature Edition" Win 7 Ultimate + other goodies (1 x 32bit + 1 x 64 bit + single use serial) all for nix. How cool is that???
Needless to say, I have already installed and run-up the new system - a little different from the RC & better still, I think. It's so nice to have the good stuff from Vista without the nasties from Vista. I don't normally post to the web but I couldn't help myself after reading all the comments about the cost of Win 7 above. Really, fellow space travellers, all you had to do was just register to be a host to get the Ultimate pack FREE. Needless to say, XP is becoming dated now and what choice do you have - Linux, MAC, etc.
Coming thru the O/Ses over the years, I haven't loaded a brand-new system before with so few faults right from the start. If it's this good already, imagine what SP1 will do to it? I am an IT System Builder & I truly like this one & if the price means kissing goodbye to that Vista FOREVER (yes, I know this is a Vista too but....), it's worth it.
Thanks
