Aussie Windows 7 Pricing Announced

You want Australian pricing for Windows 7? You got it. Just don’t complain to us if you don’t like the numbers.

The press release that came through with the pricing details was a little confusing, but here’s what you’re looking at: If you pick up a new PC from today, you’ll be able to upgrade to Windows 7 for free. Okay, free may not be 100% accurate – there may some postage and handling costs involved, depending on which manufacturer’s PC you purchase. You’ll just have to pay attention to T&Cs when you pick up your new computer to find out what you’re expected to pay.

If you don’t want to pick up a new PC, there are prices available to upgrade you from Vista or XP for the Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate SKUs, going for $199, $399 and $429 respectively.

If you want to buy the OS from scratch, you’re looking at $299 for Home Premium, $449 for professional and $469 for Ultimate.

So what do you say, PCs out there? Are these prices reasonable enough to entice you to upgrade come October 22?

Give me one rational, logical explanation why Australian citizens are expected to pay more than US citizens! Expanation has to walk all the way through ex factory + all add on costs i.e. freight, duty, GST, reseller margin etc. C’mon I challenge you to lay it out!

    Tooooo..,
expensive, will not upgrade as it is just a vista upgrade.Got a brand new PC in May this year so I will miss the upgrade, and will make a move to Linux.
If Australians get the 50% preorder I will maybe consider to get a full version.
But like everything in this country, greed is very important, and we get kicked on the head again!!
Microsoft has not learned yet, as more and more people will move to Linux!
Don’t be fooled by Microsoft as there preorder figures are a lie to con us in buying Windows 7 as it is not faster than Vista!
Microsoft is a Dinosaur with no brains!!

    Regards

Vista works a treat but yes the cost is too high. I think at $199 Australian, the OS would be much more tempting.
Mac users wanting Windows users to go OSX 10 or what ever the thing is called. I have used it and see the benifits if I was mentally retarded and needed an OS which is primely aimed at Teletubbies. Hey, how did you guys learn to post anyhow?

Sorry, Amazon UK $ US won`t currently ship Windows 7 to Aus! Have already tried! If you know someone in those countries, get them to grab a pre-order.

Well, sh!@ and here i was gonna spend some cash on a os. no more, that has stopped me cold. i guess i will stay with xp and 2 notebooks on vista and my ever faithfull linux boxes.

i love win7, but those aussie prices, crap too high esp this day and age witht eh economy. and they wont even get the business side cause it takes 2 years or more before adopting a new os. the os has to be 100%stable and in operations for a few years before anyone just jumps in.

i guess ms has just lost my sales and my families too at that price, lets see they ahve lost 13 licences. at that price no one is gonna be buying it in my family, no way. i wont even go the oem route when i upgrade.

I know a lot of small businesses feeling the pinch at the moment won’t be upgrading in a hurry at those prices.

You know more people would buy several copies for their computers if it were $50-100 a pop… But for this price you know people will simply pirate.

Microsoft, as much as it pains me to say it, take a page from the Apple marketing strategy…

$400+ for an OS that is riddled with buggy code, still susceptible to viruses/spyware etc and whose basic framework hasn’t changed at all since it was written by IBM some 30 years ago. Windows users, particularly in good old ripoff Australia, really are being well and truly screwed. Bill Gates should be hung by his nuts with barbed wire and have the skin flailed from his body.

Until recently, I knew very little about Linux. I was a Windows zealot through and through. But no more! When a friend showed me how mature Linux is now, I could not believe my eyes, and it is FREE!!! Even the office app’s are free along with thousand of other free app’s. Windows 7 pricing is nothing but a sick joke, so I suggest everyone throw off any old misconceptions about Linux distros and take a fresh look. Try either Ubuntu or Kubuntu for your desktop PC. They both use the same Linux kernel but each distro has a different look-n-feel. Kubuntu is very similar to Windows 7 in looks. If you have a netbook, try Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) which I love!

    Take a look here: http://www.canonical.com

New versions are due for release from Canonical on October 28, 2009.

    Cheers!

I cant imagine why anybody would want to upgrade.

Rather, when you buy youre next PC, Windows 7 will be pre-installed.

I have been running Win 7 RC for a few months now.
What a refief after being assaulted by the under impressive Vista HP which came with the FIRST NEW PC I have ever bought. Couldn’t stand it & went back to XP (sigh… – ahh that’s better).
I spotted a while back the opportunity to become involved in the “Win 7 Launch Party” and duly filled out the application. I was selected as a host, and as a thank you, Microsoft sent me a “Signature Edition” Win 7 Ultimate + other goodies (1 x 32bit + 1 x 64 bit + single use serial) all for nix. How cool is that???
Needless to say, I have already installed and run-up the new system – a little different from the RC & better still, I think. It’s so nice to have the good stuff from Vista without the nasties from Vista. I don’t normally post to the web but I couldn’t help myself after reading all the comments about the cost of Win 7 above. Really, fellow space travellers, all you had to do was just register to be a host to get the Ultimate pack FREE. Needless to say, XP is becoming dated now and what choice do you have – Linux, MAC, etc.
Coming thru the O/Ses over the years, I haven’t loaded a brand-new system before with so few faults right from the start. If it’s this good already, imagine what SP1 will do to it? I am an IT System Builder & I truly like this one & if the price means kissing goodbye to that Vista FOREVER (yes, I know this is a Vista too but….), it’s worth it.
    Thanks

Why do PC users put up with it? OSX is well ahead of Windows in terms of features and usability and upgrades are cheaper and pain free.

I’d been contemplating installing Windows on my Mac so I could run the odd piece of software written only for WIndows but at that price there’s no chance in hell.

Check out a Mac when purchasing your next computer. If you’re not convinced buy another PC and keep complaining.

I’ve know plenty of Windows users switching to Mac and swearing they’ll never go back… I’m yet to hear of one Mac owner doing the same with Windows!
