Aussie Windows 7 Pricing Announced

You want Australian pricing for Windows 7? You got it. Just don’t complain to us if you don’t like the numbers.

The press release that came through with the pricing details was a little confusing, but here’s what you’re looking at: If you pick up a new PC from today, you’ll be able to upgrade to Windows 7 for free. Okay, free may not be 100% accurate – there may some postage and handling costs involved, depending on which manufacturer’s PC you purchase. You’ll just have to pay attention to T&Cs when you pick up your new computer to find out what you’re expected to pay.

If you don’t want to pick up a new PC, there are prices available to upgrade you from Vista or XP for the Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate SKUs, going for $199, $399 and $429 respectively.

If you want to buy the OS from scratch, you’re looking at $299 for Home Premium, $449 for professional and $469 for Ultimate.

So what do you say, PCs out there? Are these prices reasonable enough to entice you to upgrade come October 22?

Clearly Microsoft forgot the demographic of people with no money haha. Hoo-rah for $$$

  • Nathan

Wtf? I was reasonably happy with RC1 but no way am I spending that much on Windows! Back to Ubuntu for me.

  • jwandc3

I’ll keep XP Pro on my desktop and Ubuntu (upgrading when I feel like it) on my laptop and continue to live smugly. ;-))

  • NOWAY

Pfft. There is no chance in hell i’ll upgrade at those prices. I’ll wait till I replace my computers or investigate other avenues.

  • tycho

These prices are insane. I was seriously going to buy this, but now I see the daylight robbery prices I’ll stick to XP.

If any microsoft Australia reps are listening, you have really dropped the ball on this one. Do you honestly think we don’t know (or won’t find out) how much cheaper it is in the US? Way to drag your brand down even more than it is already.

  • Why would someone buy a full edition of Professional when they can get Ultimate for $20 more? THINK THNGS THROUGH MICROSOFT!!

  • Can I just preorder off Amazon?

  • Dale

Absolute joke, think I will stick with Vista

  • Ineptic

I looked into it a bit.

    US Windows 7 Ultimate = 320.00 USD = 396.832 AUD

    AU price for Ultimate is $429, however $396 + 10% GST = $435

Im assuming this product would attract GST so all things considered its not entirely their fault.

    The pricing still suck tho.

Ineptic, u have to realise thats where the software is coming from. we are on the otherside of the world and shipping is expensive to bring here, which is why we get almost everything late. when windows 7 is released, go on ebay and purchase a retail copy of it and see if it will be cheaper. postage will cost an extra $60-$80 to ship it here. dont be a fool and think were getting ripped off. think about exporting it and tax when it gets here.

      • Ineptic

        Ohh, I get that.

That was what I was trying to say in my post, as most people didnt seem to be thinking about the reasons behind the price difference, I thought that was clear, maybe I should have made it clearer.

I just had been hoping that it would be cheaper, an now am disappointed.

      • gw

WTF! Ever heard of electronic transfer and then print and sell here – I mean really…

  • Gib

If you have a friend in the U.S. you can pre order it from the Microsoft store and have your friend ship it to you for about 1/3 the cost here.

  • rick

Just wait for it, the price of vista ultimate should come down significantly. Will upgrades work on a hacked version?? sorry for sounding newb, never tried it.

  • Harpoon

Very disappointing that for yanks its $49USD pre-order and for Aussies $199AUD :/

    It’s slightly insulting.

  • John

I am absolutely disgusted by the negligible difference in price between the full and upgrade versions of Windows 7, as well as the fact that there is no difference in price for upgrading from XP vs upgrading from Vista.

Microsoft is showing contempt and ingratitude to those loyal users who upgraded to Vista from XP. Those who did make the move to Vista have already paid a premium to move to the O/S that MS would have liked their entire audience (customer base) to move to.

Those who have already upgraded to Vista should be rewarded with a significantly cheaper upgrade path than those who stayed on XP.

  • Dono

Too much – I’m gonna stick with Vista it’s fine for me.

    • Rhys

If you have hardware that runs Vista well, Win7 will run REALLY well on it. I agree with you on the price though, but if that 1/2 price special comes to Oz, I’d be jumping for it.

  • WalterK

This is wonderful. All the reasons I need to stay with Ubuntu! Its a nice warm place without too many cash registers!

Bring on Win7 – I’ll ignore it just like Vista.

    • lasantha

i found ubuntu unstable, i was using it for 2 weeks and it crashed. try gOS. i love it, its the best OS i used because the GUI is like a hybrid of mac and windows and it comes preinstalled with WINE and i got microsoft office 2007 to run on it, which i could not do with ubuntu!! not to mention its MUCH more stable than ubuntu and i have not even reformated it yet (had it for 6 months). also gOS uses the ubuntu kernal, but its modified. give it a try, u’ll fall in love with it!

  • Justin Fitzgibbon

Ubuntu + XP for Games sounds about right for most people. According to MS, XP Pro serials can be reused again and again no matter how many times they’ve been used before, as part of their Vista downgrade setup.

Alternatively Ubuntu plus a virtual XP if you need office for some reason.

No need to upgrade ever as far as I can see.

  • Yoda

The price sucks!!!! Why so expensive because we are in Australia? Are the Australian distributors getting the kick backs? At that price you can shove Windows 7 you know where!!!!!!!!!

  • grim49

These people must think australians are dum but have internet will travel. pLENTY OF ONLINE STORES OFFERING PREORDERS 49US FOR HOME VERSION 99US FOR PRO VERSION Also keep an eye on ebay wil probably see originals going at cheap prices in US. Bought vista ultimate retail version for $200.
works fine in the box as long as I do not put near a pc!!!!

  • lasantha

who cares about the retail pricing. just buy the OEM version from ur computer shop. windows 7 ultimate will probably cost $200 or under. and you can get the OEM from scorptech and other computer shops without purchasing hardware.

also, the only reason why mac os x is so cheap is because its built on linux code. it is basically open source. most of ur linux commands work on os x. so they cant overprice their shit as its not entirely their operating system. and the only reason why mac is stable and never gets viruses is because its not as popular as windows and the linux kernal is much more stable than windows.

the reason why microsoft raised the price on vista was because they put 6 years of research into it and windows 7 is cheaper because it is using the same kernal as vista, so it is basically just an update, like how u get ur mac os x leopard and snow leopard. windows vista is basically windows 6.0 and windows 7 is windows 6.1, so windows 7 is more of an update. and microsoft developed their entire kernal, which is why windows is overpriced.

  • dexter

Stop whining and buy it direct from the USA.there’s plenty of ways around this ripoff.

  • Andrew

This is crazy, why are we not getting the pre-order option that any other countries are offered… at this price I’d think most people will wait until they need a new PC rather than upgrading their current system!

  • Sven

I was just seeing if I could pre-order the downloadable upgrade from the Microsoft store (AU$64), but it’s US only, so I checked here for the AU price. AU$200.

    Insanity :(.

  • gw

Well thanks MS – for nothing :)

Well it is a choice – get a *cough* pirate copy of Win7 or go linux… make up your own mind :P

  • AW

If you have a computer that is struggling on Vista it is time to upgrade anyway.

If you have a computer that is running Vista fine, Win 7 will not offer much.

If you are expecting awesome new featureset with Win 7 vs Vista, forget it.

So, why all the complaints ?

  • Richard

Is there region code protection on these sorta things? If so I’ll prob just get it from overseas…
